I once went to see ACDC with my girlfriend and best friend who was also the bass player for my band. It was Reunion Arena, Dallas, TX, 1985. I knew very little about the opening act. His name was Yngwie Malmsteen. From the moment he came on stage to the end of his short 45-min set, I was dumbfounded by how frigging amazing and over-the-top this guy was. My best friend and I kept looking at each other, puzzled by how anyone could be performing at such a high level with no fancy light show or pyrotechnics, just pure technical mastery and showmanship. We kept asking each other, "Who is this guy?" Blew me away, and blew ACDC completely off the stage. ACDC was boring compared to Yngwie. I assumed he would soon blow up and become huge. And although he's had a nice following his entire career, his style of music and songwriting seemed to limit him. Phenomenal talent and skill, though.
The problem I see with people making claims such as "Malmsteen is all about technique! He has no feeling in his music," is that people who are incapable of thinking for themselves, only parrot something they read in a magazine, or online. If anyone does not recognize the deep emotional feeling that is pervasive in this piece, well, from my point of view, they just have a hole in their soul.

Agreed brother. In this video fast forward to 7 minutes and 7 seconds and tell me there is no emotion in that stunning acoustic piece. I think that those who say Yngwie lacks emotion are not unlike micro wave burrito consumers dining at Ruth's Chris. Their chicken nugget gourmet dining experience has no comprehension or appreciation for the finer complex menu served at the Malmsteen Bistro eludes their elementary PB& J taste bud level of appreciation. With that said, I just talked myself into a plate of chicken nuggets as I finish my entree of Yngwie.
Ah man.... I remember hearing this for the first time when I was about 15 years old, somewhere around 1985.... more years ago than I care to remember! Happy memories :)
I was "24" . . .
Completely blown away 1st hearing it (I believe) on a Metal program on LA's AOR/FM station; 94.7 KMET. Went out right away to buy the Lp, which I still have. I was working at a Pizza Restaurant. Good and bad memories. I can't believe I was 24 in 1984 :P. Good to see you here Jim!
Ah yes, "Adagio in G minor" Also used to great effect in "Cold is Being" by Renaissance. I like this. I associated Yngwie with playing too fast and trying to impress, but this showcases his feel for classical music nicely. 🎶
Yngwie is far more than speed, his vibrato and bending is also top notch.
@@epic103 - (not saying this about you Mike) Isn't it odd when people marginalize guitar players such as this? He is doing the same thing Classical Violinists do, only on distorted/over-driven guitar, yet the same techniques are used (and a few more guitar oriented tricks/techniques). They are "musicians" who want to be the best at their instruments. I guess some folks don't like LOUD guitars ("why not BOTH"). Glad you enjoyed the _otherside_ of Malmsteen Mike :).

Saw him open for ACDC in 1985. He was definitely something else. I remember through the majority of his set his band just stood there doing next to nothing while he soloed...
I saw Yngwie with Alcatraz in Sn Francisco. I bought the Rising Force when it first came out and it remains my favorite Malmsteen album.
The middle initial "J" is important so you don't confuse him with all the other Yngwie Malmsteens out there!

Such a beautiful, emotional song. Proof that Yngwie can play with depth and feel. He just chooses not to 😀. This album changed everything for guitar playing. Just look at every metal player since.
In fairness... Yngwie usually puts a few emotional songs on his albums. Like Crying, Brothers, Marching Out, Overture 1383, Black Star etc... Cheers

Yngwie usually puts 2 or 3 emotional tracks on every album, they're just not as known as the other songs.

Icarus' dream suite is all that one needs to listen to in order to understand his composing capability. you can also say what you want about his alleged sloppiness or repetitiveness, but YOU will fall silent/humbled while listening to this Masterpiece, and if you say you won't, you're not a true Musician or maybe just a jealous individual.
Parts of this remind me of Camel's Stationary Traveler. A wonderfully melancholy feel to the guitar and pan flute.
This suggestion may surprise you; take a listen to *Opeth* and their _all melodically sung_ album "Damnation". Mikael Akerfeldt; the composer, guitarist and vocalist is VERY influenced by Andrew Latimer.
As a guitarist there are few people I've ever heard who are more naturally gifted. Unfortunately, he found something he was exceptionally good at, and kind of kept doing the same thing. His 1st 3 albums I love, the 4th was his biggest hit and had some good pop metal songs. Everything after that? Diminishing returns. Saw him live once, and he was jaw-dropping. But he never seemed to exercise the control he had on the first few albums. He overplays everything now. Just my opinion, and I do still love those 1st 3 albums
100% agree. I thought he'd go on and do movie soundtracks but imagine being him, 24 years old 4th album just dropped, all that coke, girls, money, and people screaming at you in concert every night, thats a treadmill thats hard to get off.
This is a good example of Yingie's abilities and is a better representation of his use of classical music influences . He didn't just shred and show of, he actually had great fluidity in his playing. Even if you don't enjoy this kind of musicyou do have to give Yingie credit for creating this style of guitar playing.
I'm glad ur lady enjoyed it bcuz this song is one of my favorites by Malmsteen and Malmsteen Always plays with Feeling and for those who dont think so they need their head examined.

Such a joy watching you guys enjoying some Swedish art to the fullest! Yngwie Malmsteen, pride of Stockholm, Sweden. Saw him live in 1988 with Joe Lynn Turner and later in 2007. What A guitar hero!
i speak often on facebook with his ex drummer of the rising force era, anders johansson. another guy who changed my life and introduced me to another drum hero. i will always love yngwie. been a fan for 35 years. in fact the first album i ever bought with my own money was a malmsteen album in 86. trilogy.
Yngwie gets alot of effortless vibrato from his heavily scalloped fretboard that makes for very fast scales & arpeggios & vibrato by simply pushing down hard on the fretted note.He doesnt have to strain as hard as with a standard fretboard.
Him doing this with full orchestra is just to die for!. Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra.

I'm not normally a fan of the more showy guitarists but this was very tasteful. Having said that I expect Nick has heard it but I'd love you to react to Surfing With The Alien by Joe Satriani. Absolutely jaw dropping.

I think real guitarists should all come to the agreement that everyone has their own style and the way they play is their form of expression. I personally believe he’s put out some good songs with plenty of feel. Like him or not you have to acknowledge that he is insanely talented
Yngwie is amazing no doubt and was a pioneer of that style and there's so many now that can play like that. Everybody can get burned out on any kind of music but if you like something alot our ratings can change over time and when you come back to it, you know why you liked it in the first place.(I get tired of shredding since almost everyone can do it now days) One of best solos I think is the one in the song FIRE. What do you think Nick?
Fire, from Trilogy is one of his overall best solos! Completely agree. He composed a perfect solo for that song, always blows my mind when I listen to it.

He was sort of the Hendrix or Van Halen of his generation, in that EVERY young rock guitarist had to learn to “play like Yngwie”. So you ended up with loads of shredders, with scalloped frets like Yngwie, who concentrated on arpeggios like the ones Yngwie played. No one could ever get that tone, and that vibrato, though. He was probably the most talented guitarist of his generation (Prince, maybe the most talented musician), but his first four albums are really all I can listen to now. He never developed as a songwriter. He could/should have been enormous. I always wondered what his career might have been like if he had teamed up with someone like Ronnie James Dio for 3-4 albums. Still, for me, a better guitarist than Vai, Satriani, George Lynch or even Randy Rhoads
Have you heard Hot On Your Heels by Steeler? Killer Malmsteen solo intro. The song is kind of hair metal-ish, but the guitar work is great.

I'm actually quite amazed, how many people are saying they have never heard of this man . . . wow!
I'm guessing some are Metal or Progressive Rock fans, some are guitarist fans (Jazz/Fusion), and some are just passers by here, or have only listened to AOR FM stations who don't know of all this "music" that existed outside of radio multiple decades ago to a Metalheads/Proggers delight. It's AWESOME to hear folks being introduced to fan faves :D.
I used to collect "Guitar Player" magazine, and I actually owned a few issues that featured up and coming artists in the monthly article called "Spotlight". One featured a 15 year old "Paul Gilbert", who would come to LA, and then form "Racer X", and then become more famous in the mainstream for "Mr. Big", but to the shredder world he is well known to this day: www.pinterest.com/pin/734297914213804678/

I remembered his article well, because he mentioned 2 of my fave Guitarists; Ritchie Blackmore and Allan Holdsworth (also was just discovering Uli Jon Roth, and his time with the Scorpions), who I discovered when blindly purchasing the debut "UK" album a year or two prior.
By the time I heard the Metal band "Steeler" (with Ron Keel), and especially the debut of "Alcatrazz" and former singer of Rainbow, Graham Bonnet, I became a devotee of Malmsteen. But purchasing his solo album "Rising Force" (1984), this was Ritchie Blackmore on steroids . . . AMAZING compositions and playing (the vocalist Jeff Scott Soto now sings for "Sons of Apollo" with Derek Sherenian, Billy Sheehan, Billy Sheehan, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, and Mike Portnoy). This was Paganini on overdriven Guitar.
Since my father was into all kinds of music, including Rock (growing-up in Honduras and listening to U.S. Rock 'n Roll from the 1950's, then being here in the 1960's with the Beatles, Santana and many others), one of those "moments" I can remember where our _differences_ were put aside; my folks never cared that I played my music LOUD, because most of it they actually enjoyed. And my Brother was influenced by what he could _hear_ behind my closed door :p. But one day I was playing my newly purchased album and "Icarus Dream Suite" was playing, and my dad peeked-in and asked; "Who is this?" and I said; "He's from Sweden, Yngwie Malmsteen", as it played-on, he simply said; ". . . pretty good!" :D.
Like many are saying; I never got why he gets ridiculed as he does what he does best! It may be over the top, but at times it can be melodious, beautiful and well composed. 1st hearing his solo album is a very fond memory, 1st hearing him, on I believe an all Metal program on LA's 94.7 KMET with Jim Ladd and "The Metal Shoppe/kMETAL Shop". I went and bought that Lp right away, and would play that album in the dark and just be transported, like my Rush albums. Lex, I was getting a bit teary eyed myself, it brings back pleasant memories when this album played on my turn-table, and just the "emotion" in the music. I guess there was a little bit of Arabic/Spanish scales Lex picked-up on (
"Phrygian dominant scale"), but it was more a "Medieval" influence (Baroque, Bach) to these and Nick's ears. I LOVE how at the end Yngwie has the acoustic guitar sounding a bit far in the background, and then the different layers come in on each ear (left, right, left, etc.). He wasn't _just_ a shredder but a well thought-out composer, who could let a song breathe and then all out shred in 1 song (Opeth and Meshuggah come to mind, as well-as many Prog Metal bands i.e. Fates Warning, Dream Theater, etc.). One of the finest moments in Metal history. It proves Classical was the 1st Metal genre ;).
Again, I LOVE that people are being exposed to MORE music here. I GEEK out when I get to share Playlists, history, and personal experiences because I love sharing the bands/musicians I've enjoyed with people not initiated to some of our favorites. If they were obscure, underground, or slipped through the cracks (or classics). We ALL have a long road ahead with Nick & Lex and the family they've created . . . I'm trying to be as patient as possible because I have a lot to share, but so do others, and we hope that more people will like, enjoy our selections, and will search-out more of their musics. And we are open to learn about bands _we_ have never heard before and be pleasantly surprised as well.

Note: Tony MacAlpine is another animal altogether. He was more "Chopin" than Paganini on his 1st few albums, but then he became more of a Jazz/Fusion player, has gone on tour with Steve Vai as a 2nd Guitarist, and has done some great stuff with Derek Sherenian and "Planet X".
Lastly: I HOPE you do a tribute to co-founding member of Kansas, violinist/vocalist "Robby Steinhardt" who passed away on the 17th of July. I suggested some tracks that featured his vocals and violin, in an Email I sent you guys. He was part of a HUGE impact on a 14 year old just learning what music could be in 1977, with the album "Point of Know Return".

I have been listening to Yngwie since I was 16 so it was very enjoyable to show this to my wife. I guess it was a bit progressive now that I think about it. The second album Marching Out is amazing as well. The third album Trilogy is a bit more neoclassical with poppy hooks. Glad you enjoyed🤟

A while since you did a STEVEN WILSON - please listen to DRIVE HOME with one of the best guitar solos ever by Guthrie Govan. Better still listen to the whole of THE RAVEN WHO REFUSED TO SING which contains DRIVE HOME as well as LUMINOL and THE RAVEN WHO REFUSED TO SING all top drawer Steven Wilson songs as well as containing some really fine work by the whole band especially Guthrie Govan - but all are absolutely top form.

Yngwie wasn't wearing all those crazy bracelets in the early 80s...he started with that stuff after he got fat. We remember him in Keel...when we heard that intro to 'Hot on Your Heels', we were like..."this guy is better than EVH". You should hear it.

yngwie is strongly influenced by Villa Lobos especially 5 preludes which is standard Classical Repertoire, the cycle of fifths thing we hear a lot with yng, is also in 5 preludes . Heictor Villa Lobos is Brazillian and wrote the 5 preludes in 1940 in the modern Era, the piece sounds retro to 1740 the baroque Era!
segovia also played Flamenco . the technique in flamenco is more advanced than lute or parlor music .
it was Segovia who had the technique to make the guitar a true Solo instrument leading a 110 piece orchestra in the modern Era.
the song that was Segovia's "hit" was Bach Bouree in E which was written by Bach on harpsichord in the baroque period .
before segovia Fernando Sor was a composer who wrote on guitar but was not fully able to have guitar recognized the way segovia put it together .
the thing with Van Halen and yngwie is the Dutch Gypsy Jazz and yng has some Gypsy Style too but he only claims DiMeola yet in his book Relentless he does say he has an uncle who played Gypsy jazz but he doesn't want to talkabout it....

Big fan of Malmsteen, however I never really tried to work out his stuff. Nice choice also! Plini...I say no more.
Yingie was hot stuff back in the day and we enjoyed listening to those fingers fly over that guitar. The only bad thing I'll say for the shredders is that for everyone like him, Steve Vai or Joe Satriani there were many more, especially in the hair-metal scene that were more flash and dash than anything else. Maybe I'm a Dinosaur but I much prefer old schoolers with incredible feel who have their own style and reach deep into your soul. Give me David Gilmour, Jimmy Page or Michael Schenker any time. 😊Eddie Van Halen was the best shredder ever and the guys mentioned earlier have done great things as well but so many others could not conjure up what they did, which is why I listen to old school like the later 3 much more often Great reaction guys, you are the best! 😎 Rock On!

Oh yes. The whole album, Tommy Bolin"s guitar work is amazing. The main bass riff from Stratus was sampled by Massive Attack on the song Safe From Harm from their seminal album Blue Lines.

Yngwie rips off alot of passages from Niccolo Paganini, & he has to slow them down from the originals.
Met Yngwie in the mid 80s, I used to Jam guitar with his old Roommate Kurt James, Kurt took Yngwies place after Steve Vie, in Steeler & he’s now in The Gram bonnet band, Alcatraz, BTW this is a very mediocre Yngwie song compared to what he could do on other songs..

Couldn’t agree more. Yngwie is kind of like a dog riding a bicycle. It’s not so much about what he is doing, its that he can do it at all.
@@mvunit3 That's a good clip and I'm sure many guitarists probably work on pieces that same way today and develop their own licks/riffs/patterns. I would have liked to see back in the day a match up with Yngwie and SRV just to see what they might have taken from one another that they wouldn't normally play.
