    As someone whose studied a lot of physics, here’s my explanation for the larger explosions. For the most part the lava has been flowing quickly but gently into the ocean. As heat conducts out of the lava into the water, the surface cools and hardens forming a crust. Lave continues to flow downhill underwater. As long as the lava flows in a laminar manner, the crust expands smoothly and only a small surface area of liquid lava is directly in contact with the water (wherever the crust is cracking and spreading). However, if the flow encounters an underwater cliff (possibly the terminus of an older hardened lava flow), it might drop very suddenly. The sudden drop might cause so much tensile stress on the crust surrounding the flow (due to the flow being stretched under its own weight) that it fragments. This sudden fragmentation leads to a turbulent mixing of liquid lava and water. Suddenly there is a very large surface area of liquid lava in direct contact with the water. A large volume of water then vaporizes, exploding to the surface mixed with fragments of liquid lava.

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 6 лет назад

      I think it's possible that the bigger explosions initiate through a chain reaction. The first small explosion begins as the crust shatters when the flow spills over the edge of the hardened underwater terminus. Even a small initial explosion can blast away the protective crust on nearby lava and cause additional liquid lava to turbulently mix up into the water above. Once this happens you can get progressively bigger explosions that involve more and more exposed liquid lava as the crust is blasted away over a large section of the underwater flow.

    • @marshallbs
      @marshallbs 6 лет назад +1

      I think the USGS should have been more clear in warning tour boats about the potential for underwater explosions even hundreds of meters beyond the shoreline entry point. The lava continues to flow downhill underwater and a boat going anywhere over top the underwater flow is in danger. I imagine underwater steam explosions could potentially reach the surface even a kilometer or more from the shore. The underwater flow is only protected by a thin crust. Anything that disturbs the laminar flow and creates turbulent mixing of exposed liquid lava... like the breaking up of an unstable underwater levee/dam near the terminus, sudden underwater cliff spillover, etc... can possibly trigger a large underwater steam explosion. Being anywhere over an underwater lava flow in a boat is like being over a massive underwater pile of dynamite. Even just dropping a heavy object like an anchor into the lava could set it off.

  • @gregmarsters2434
    @gregmarsters2434 6 лет назад +2

    My best understanding-guess is lava can form underwater tubes that can travel some distance to then form pillow lava some distance out to sea (notice the boiling steaming waters many meters away from shore). In the event that a tube pressurizes and shatters can suddenly expose large volumes of lava to water all at once. It can even chain-react by introducing water into the tube that is then carried with the flow eventually blowing up the tube like a pipe bomb.

    This looks similar to what I experienced working in a steel mill. It was common knowledge to everyone in the melt shop that if water was floating on top of the molten steel it would just boil and turn to steam harmlessly. But if the water became encapsulated with in the molten steel or the molten slag on top of the steel it would flash to steam violently. When water flashes to steam it expands something on the order of 14000 times its volume. This happens instantly and creates a violent explosion.

    • @flyingturtle4559
      @flyingturtle4559 6 лет назад

      Samuel__ Absolutely correct. The nearly instantaneous transformation of water into steam gas releases unimaginable amounts of energy, only surpassed by designed explosives like gunpowder or c4.

      They explain it at 11:00 It even goes onto the very next question from another caller.
      Hmmm... they, "...didn't see it." (The lightning) But they do explain how it happens, but I don't believe they really do IMO.
      Plus they warn only one question from each caller. Anyways so a caller phones in and asks her question and the continues on to ask for a second question. Take a listen 13:09

    USGS, Please explain why you lost equipment at one of your monitoring sites in the past few days to a lava overflow. Last week, you reassured local residents that the USGS had crews monitoring the lava flows 24 hours a day seven days a week. If you were unable to save your equipment from a lava flow, should local residents and the mayor of the big Island of Hawaii trust you to be able to warn people who are in the path of another lava overflow in time to save their lives?

    Actually, the lava flow into the ocean reminds of Genesis when land came out of the sea. In typology the sea represents death and the land life. Thus, land coming from the sea can be thought as life emerging from a situation of death. The same for a seed buried in the ground emerging out of it as life or fruit producing plant. Resurrection is like that, what comes out of the ground is better than what was buried.

    My questions are: At what date did the 61G flow cease flowing? I seem to recall in March 2018 they still had (commercial) walking and bike tours going out there even after there was an on-land gas explosion that killed the tour guide (biz owner) and was partly inhaled by one of the tourists. Would inhaling this at close range cause permanent lung damage? What about yesterdays on-water explosion? The boat reversed out of there "enveloped" in a steam cloud according to eye witnesses. Will these people receive follow up checks to receive lung exams?
    I know the best particle masks will not keep out the gas itself...

      Different risk tolerance for unmanned equipment vs human lives. They deliberately put that equipment in risky places for exactly this reason... it’s expendable. Humans aren’t. They gather data knowing that the equipment might get lost. It’s an acceptable cost to gather data that may help keep humans safe in future volcanic events.
      I’m not the government’s biggest fan, but saying they can’t be trusted with lives because they lost some equipment is utterly nonsensical.

    I find it ironic that despite Kilauea volcano being the most heavily studied volcano in the world and yet the USGS does not know what is going on or what is next? What are they studying? With all of the ground equipment and satellite data they have access to, how can they say that they don't know ??????

    • @flyingturtle4559
      @flyingturtle4559 6 лет назад

      Tammy__ Keep in mind that the Hawaii Volcano Observatory was only established in 1912. That would mean that they have only 106 years of concrete scientific data and over half of that was done with now obsolete equipment. Considering that Kilauea is estimated to be 400,000 years old, do you really think that USGS can make an exact prediction of what will happen next? If you had done any research on your own you would understand how unpredictable the volcano has proven to be in the past and making predictions without data to back it up would be irresponsible. Many of the events in this eruption are first time encounters so it's best to just watch and learn. I will agree that these USGS spokespeople seem more concerned with what is occurring at the summit and that they have not been keeping a close eye on the total picture. Maybe they need 2 teams, one up at the summit and another on the ground and they need to get together and issue more timely, collaborated updates. They shouldn't be waiting for the public to start clamoring for information. At least they should show that they are trying to stay ahead of the game.

    I think it's wrong and the media reporting that Ikaika's company is being named as one of the ones involved in yesterday's accident, and THEY WERE NOT. Their business may suffer from this. The media who reported this incorrectly needs to immediately RETRACT their story and present FACTS on the true name of the unfortunate lava boat tour company involved. It is sad all the way around, and it baffles me why the Coadt Guard would REDUCE the safe distance when HVO has clearly made clear their position that 300 meters should be considered safe.

    that was kind of a weird non-explanation - why are there explosions? well, the lava hits the ocean and the resulting steam expands ad that's an explosion. kinda like, the explosion is an explosion... well, yes! but why? lava is always going in there and the lava is always hot, and the water is always wet and the steam always happens....why is it sometimes just steamy, and sometimes explode-y?

    • @michpaulatto
      @michpaulatto 6 лет назад +14

      It's difficult to know exactly how it happens because it is a very difficult and dangerous place to take measurements. Here is my explanation: The lava flow underwater is usually covered by a solidified crust, as the lava flows underneath it may deform and break this crust, periodically coming directly into contact with water causing explosions. What probably happened to cause the larger explosion was that the crust covering the lava flow broke up over a larger area exposing the lava very rapidly to the water, this caused rapid steam formation and explosion.

    • @wiretamer5710
      @wiretamer5710 6 лет назад +2

      Its a stupid answer because it was a stupid question.
      Here is an example of an intelligent question:
      Is the lava flowing from the minor ocean entries, different in any way from the lava flowing from the main ocean entry?
      How long is the delay between summit crater collapse event, and an increasing in flow from fissure 8? Has this delay changed in duration throughout the eruption?
      How long does it take for a spillover lava flow to completely solidify? At what temperature does the lava become rock? At what temperature does the crust of solid rock become an insulating layer?

    • @HotelPapa100
      @HotelPapa100 6 лет назад +8

      It is steamy if the contact is continuous. It is explode-y when there is a sudden contact of a lot of hot material with water. Can be a large blob of lava covering and including a pocket of water. Can be an overcrusted lava tube cracking open and water rushing in. It may also be water simmering, displacing the water column above, thus pressure reducing, and suddenly a lot of overheated water flashing into steam. I'd expect more of steam, less of a debris carrying explosion in the latter case.

      More people are starting to realize that volcanology is based on speculation and theory more than anything else, most of the time they just don't know why these events happen just like they don't know what triggered this new eruptive phase of Kilauea.

    • @flyingturtle4559
      @flyingturtle4559 6 лет назад +9

      B molitor__ Whether there is an explosion or not depends on the volume of lava piling into the ocean at that point and how rapidly the seawater is converted into steam. The more rapidly a liquid converts to steam the greater the release of energy and that release of energy has to be unimpeded. The easiest way to illustrate this is like this: If you have a pot of oil on the stove hot enough to deep fry frozen french fries, and you tossed in the frozen fries one at a time there's no danger, but if you dumped the whole bag all at once you will have an explosion and end up in the hospital with serious burns. That's because the amount of energy being released is confined by the size of the pot, resulting in an explosive event.

    They need to give fissure eight a nice name. It’s pretty clear that the fissure has taken over. The parent volcano has closed up shop now. The base and walls of the original volcano are just plunging deeper as the fissure eight has taken over all of the eruption activities now. Start a contest and rename fissure eight, it is doing all of the normal volcanic duties. 😉 😎

    So it's an ancient train that was uprooted by the lava flow that still had water in it's tank from an infinity ago.
    So basically an unknown race had developed steam locomotives possibly before life on earth this time.
    Unbelievable. 😐
    Calling it a submarine is because it wasn't identified as an ancient steam train and misidentified as a submarine..🤷
    9:27 you see the goal car explosion revealing that coal decays over infinity resulting in a less than spectacular explosion.
