This was very helpful information for me. We just closed on an arts and crafts style home built in 1920, that sits right dab in the center of a small rural town in Southeast Georgia, here in the Southern United States. Our home sits directly behind the historic courthouse that faces main street. The entire front garden needs to be addressed, especially from a privacy viewpoint. But I have to start somewhere, and your advice to grow just five packets of hardy annuals to provide immediate flowering results, and lots of plants, but without becoming overwhelmed by planting to many different flowers, is sound gardening advice. Thank you, you have a new subscriber.
Oh thank you so much. Your new home sounds lovely. I envy your climate in Georgia. You have an advantage starting seeds there. Your climate is perfect for many of the seeds I grow. When I rented a house during a move I filled large pots with cosmos and sowed wildflowers alongside the drive. Within a few months the whole garden was transformed as easily as that. Good luck with it all. I wish you well. X
Thank you Jill. I love growing in pots. I have roses and dahlias in pots plus loads of annuals.I wish I could grow peonies in pots too, but I have read that they don't thrive in pots. They only have flowers for a few weeks then, as pretty as they are, just leaves. I have to grow my hostas in pots to avoid slug damage on my clay soil and heucheras also need to be grow in pots as they don't seem to thrive in my garden -maybe the soil is too heavy for them? Happy growing 🙂
If you want to maximise impact I don't think peonies are the way to go anyway. They are slow to flower and can be really temperamental. There are plenty of better choices. When my kids were young I really only grew in pots. I felt I had more control over the plants and I could keep them closer to the house for care and watering and so I could see them even when sitting indoors. I am definitely a container loving gardener. Happy growing to you to. 🌷🌼🌸
Great ideas. Especially one area so it has most impact. Thanks for sharing.
Very clever ideas, we're already following some ofthem. Personally, I love the idea of starting from scratch😊
I think you just learn more starting from scratch.
I really need to sit and sort my flower seed Jill or I’ll fall behind so thanks for the reminder. Have an amazing weekend, Ali ☔️🥶🇨🇦

I used a dog food box and put some compost in with slices of tomatoes, who knows. Just a little thing.....😊
does it work? I mean it definitely saves a few steps and a lot of faff for sure!
