Fieldsports Britain - shooting the world’s biggest grouse

- The world’s biggest grouse, capercaillie, were abundant in Scotland within living memory. Since then, a combination of hopeless management by the RSPB and a change in climate has wiped them out. Niall Rowantree goes to Swedish Lapland where they are doing well - so well that the locals hunt and eat them. He finds out how the Swedes conserve them, and works out what hope they have in Scotland. He is shooting capercaillie over Finnish spitz with a Blaser D99 drilling in 7x57.
That’s not all. South African filmmaker Phil Hattingh contributes an item about how the antis are trying to destroy conservation in Namibia in the name of animal rights Plus we are giving away an Athlon scope priced at £560, thanks to Rifleman Firearms. David is on the news stump with news of how shooters marked the life of HM Queen at her funeral, and James Marchington has the best hunting videos on RUclips in Hunting RUclips. It’s another great #FieldsportsBritain

Good day Charlie and the team, awesome videos for this week with great footage and beautiful scenery, thanks and thumbs up for all the videos, best regards and greetings from New Zealand,, Tony.
Thanks, Tony. It's a gorgeous place. / Charlie
The Neil/blaser piece was excellent 👍
Awesome film. Well shot Niall (and David!).
Niall Rountree a true countryman and a nine bloke to boot
Great programme this week, it looks amazing in lapland I will have to take a trip, the wee spitz is a canny dog I've not seen working before
Another fantastic programme guys😉👍♥️🇬🇧
6,5x55 and other s with good fmj is also much used on Capercaille, Sako developed the 7x33 Sako on a mini action L46 5 gram bullet that is well known for Capercaille and many other fine small game and birds.
Great show as always - really interested in the idea of the rise of ticks in the UK - with all the work being done on mosquito reduction, is any of that research transferrable to reducing tick numbers?
Blaser drilling and comjo barrels are free floated,it is a rubber wedge behind them, just to fill the room there .mit make the rifle barrel or shotgun can be shot without risk for heat altering point of aim.
Niall hits the nail on the head again. Look at climate change rather than other causes, deer for one!
Great content 👍
Hope to see some English game days this year hopefully be possible with these prices😦
one of your best to date
That dog would drive me crazy - yap yap yap 😂
Note to self: Don't buy Patagonia. Ever!!
Excellent film. Is Niall away from West Highland Hunting?
Anyway, brilliant piece from Lapland with David and Niall. Always worth listening to Mr Rowantree. David? Not so much. I would quite happily add a couple of paras about capercaillie in Scotland and my own experiences growing up (I never did) on Deeside when birds were driven through the old shooting drives but not for killing but for counting by Aberdeen Uni. But I won't. High tick burden.? An interesting starting point for a natter over a beer.
For me, this was the best show for a while. Specifically, because of the quality of the Blaser sponsored piece from Lapland.
Brilliant, David.
Thank you, Charlie and all the team.
PS WTF does a film about salvaging stuff from a garage have to do with field sports? James must have been on the cooking sherry again. There are 000s of field sports films out there on RUclips. Storage Wars isn't one of them.
Thanks Colin...I think 🤣. D
Ref. the news - sorry but I have to say (despite being a big shooting fan) I'm not in support of chasing a deer to exhaustion until it can no longer take another step, then shooting it....
Stalk it and shoot it - fine. While it grazes away and doesn't even know you're there, take the shot, it's dead before it hits the floor. But chase it up hill and down dale while it runs for it's life, scared out it's skin until it can no longer carry on, then shoot it?? Nah sorry but that's just cruel. And it gets the rest of the field sports that AREN'T cruel in trouble.
As shooting and countryside folk, we continually campaign for the right to do what we do and argue it isn't cruel. But this is cruel! There is no argument to say otherwise.
Thanks for this. If you haven't already, it's worth going out with a staghounds pack to see what it's all about. If you have, I apologise and take your points on board. I am nothing but impressed by staghunting and how the harbourers, when working at their best, manage the herds on Exmoor. / Charlie
Sorry Charlie but I don’t agree.Yes it’s very traditional and historic but I believe that’s where it should be consigned to now.The World has moved on now and we are fighting an uphill battle to retain what we would consider ethical fieldsports with the quarry despatched immediately without suffering as often as possible and dogs to follow up and recover them if not.No certainly not a fan.🧐🤔
👍
Which breed of Dog is this?
Finnish spitz
Shooting birds on the branch over a dog... interesting!!! We don't do that in Michigan but....
First!
