I have a set of DQ10A that are mirror imaged. I used to sell them as well. Another classic but rare find is the Dynaco A25XL (note the XL). Lots of A25's out there, and they were nice, but the XLs had much improved upper mids an top end.
A25s were nicely balanced, solidly built, could play loudly well ... a bargin entry into high fidelity. perfect for the aspirational audiophile / college student bitd.
@@grumpy9478 Indeed. I used to sell those as well. Not many people remember the dynamax configuration with six A25XL per side wired in a series-parallel combination. But WOW. Listening to 'We Just Disagree' on those just punched you in the gut when the bass and drums kicked in.
@@bigb2020 Look for a thin border around the front of the grille. Also - grilles are velcro/removable, in contrast with A25. All of the original A25 and A25XL were made in Denmark in the 70's prior to Dynaco in Pensauken NJ going under. All used SEAS drivers. The woofers were the same in both, but the tweeters were different. After closing in 1980, the Dynaco brand was purchased by other companies and continued to be used sporadically, with some using variations of the A25 model designation. But the original company ceased operations at that time.
I'm particularly in love with the B&W DM-220/30 models, especially their drivers. The BZ-200/16 ohm drivers are die cast zinc, with vented pole pieces. The TP or TZ-26 tweeters (depending on colour) are 1 inch polymide tweeters are clear but mellow. I bought two sets after rebuilding my housemate's pair of 220s, and I have a set of drivers from a 3rd set. I love those drivers. B&W used some black magic on those puppies.
White van speakers! :-). A phenomenon that deserves a documentary! Who were those guys? Where did they come from? What happened to them? Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.
I got a pair of Goodmans 201s from a friend, and I'm restoring them. He's unfortunately lost his hearing and I'm doing this as a tribute to his friendship and his love for music. He also gifted me a Rogers HG88 Mk II valve amplifier with the speakers.
Okay, you're definitely an audio enthusiast. Finding deals. Here in Chicago, two points on finding deals. First the more affluent neighborhoods typically have better deals where the less/least, want ridiculous amounts and many times for a lot of crap. Second, I don't find much stuff in the great wide mid range price range. Either you paid nothing or near nothing for a component or you pay what they're worth. In other words that Bugatti is either found in the garbage or at a dealer who knows the true value of it. Recently at an audio dealer Saturday morning as I walked in the door, this older but well quaffed man was waiting to find out if the equipment he brought in was worth keeping repairing; a Marantz Model 7, 8, and 10B. Up to that point I've never seen an 8 amplifier plus he had more stuff at home too heavy to bring along with his son which after talking to him I believed were Model 9s. He didn't know what he had and I explained to him what what he had. And he got all of it from a neighbors junk(well not junk) left on the street. It was the one day a year in this affluent Northshore neighborhood put nicer things out to pasture. I mean. I have seen Kindel Mahogany furniture out there. Most of these people don't want to deal with selling stuff, unknown strangers coming in there homes.
I highly recommend Boston Acoustics. I have several of the A-series, 40, 60, 70, 120, and 150s. I was able to get an amazing deal on the A-150 series III for $100 already refoamed.
I agree! My first entry into high-end speakers was with the big A400’s! I could finally hear everything down to 30Hz with full dynamics. They were a revelation, if not the best at imaging though. I’d love to have a pair again, or maybe some small 150’s.
I’ve watched a number of your videos and they’re always so thoughtful and educational. Didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed. Now I am! You mentioned Boston Acoustics A100, A150, etc. I have owned 150s, 200s, and even the big 400s. But the one to look for is the very last of the real Boston speakers which were designed to be an all out assault on hifi and compete with the boutique brands. I’m talking about the T1000 and T1030. My son is looking to get into hifi and the pair of Thiel CS3s that belonged to my deceased father turned out to have blown tweeters. We’re still trying to decide if it’s worth investing in new tweeters and having the bass equalizer serviced, but in the meantime I found a pair of Boston T1030s for $200 that I plan to take a 4 hour roadtrip to retrieve tomorrow with my son. These are acoustic suspension speakers with two 8 inch woofers, a 6 1/2 inch midrange, and one-inch soft dome tweeter. I owned a pair when I was about 20 years old and actually gave my Ohm Walsh 2s back to my father (who had gifted them to me when he bought the Thiels) because they were objectively better. Great speakers! One more cult speaker to add to the list is the Spica TC-50. And one to avoid unless you are VERY skilled is any electrostatic or planar magnetic speaker (quad, Martin Logan, Acoustat, etc). Love your work and super chill vibe. Should’ve known you’re from the PNW. Oh, and loved seeing the Fishbone LP in the background! And last, I agree that the OMG deals are harder than ever to find. I did find a pair of absolutely mint one-owner Klipsch Cornwalls for $900. And a few weeks later, I found a pair of the new JBL L100 Classics that retail for $4,400 with a few minor cosmetic issues for $650! They’re incredible and look amazing with that iconic, orange quadrex grille. ☮️
Back in the 70s a friend of mine had a pair of large Advent walnuts he drove them with his Marantz receiver love the sound always wanted some and still do. have you heard them ?
I really enjoyed your presentation. I have a pair of Genesis ll's and I doubt I'll ever let them go. I'm certain that they will need some help as the only thing I've done is replace the green colored surrounds. They still rock after 40 years. Congrats on the DQ10A! Funny, I've always wanted to own a pair since first hearing them back in 1978. A buddy of mine owned a pair that he'd added a subwoofer to and it was nothing short of amazing. Thanks again!
The "thing" about BOSE 901's is that you HAVE to make sure you have/get the Equalizer Unit with the pair that you buy. Enjoyed this installment. Thanks for taking the time to assemble it. Rip
Nah internet myth. I run the 4 series with a 2021 Denon 2 ch amp for tv movies etc and that is a phenomenal setup for quite cheap. Only real thing about the Bose is they must be up off the ground and be lined up properly from walls corners and each other. Mine were saved from the tip and are super mucho!
My oldest is a pair of DCM macrophone. I also have DCM Timepiece, and TF500. Advent Baby II, Advent 2002. Paradigm Titan V1, Paradigm 3SE mini. Bose 201 and 141. Mordaunt Short MS-904 towers. EV ZLX-12P powered pa speakers.
I forgot to mention DCM! I have a pair of lower-end DCM's. I want to say CX-27... mini towers or tall bookshelves. You can see one of the pair between the Wharfedales. Are DCM's cult classics? I don't know about Mordaunt.
The DQ10 have an incredible 5 driver integration, they sound sweet and forgivin, the only weak point is the 10 inch woofer doesn't go down to 40 hertz so they need the help of a good subwoofer like the Audio Pro B2-50 that go down to 22 hertz, I did a recap using Solen capacitors on a pair
Yeah my Uncle Scott had a pair of Klipsch speakers in 1985 or 6 I believe and I was blown away it literally would make the fish tanks bounce also the windows vibrate they were about two and a half feet tall 2 ft wide and about a foot or so deep and they were black felt and had steel black metal screens over the huge ass woofer I thought that was cool looking❤🎉 but the sound holy s***! Anyways have a great evening my friend
Great to see the DQ-10's mentioned, I have had mine about 30-35 years, they are matched, look in back at baffle board for the right/left tag. Mine came with the tall stands, and of all I have owned they are the easiest to keep looking nice, just the wood on the side. I do not remember if I am second or third owner, The other men apparently did not like them, They are power hogs! I had an Accuphase that was hard pressed to get them up there, Traded for a class 'h' Sounds craftsman 300+ WPC they woke up, Funny the house lights dimmed in time to the music. And diy they developed the dreaded foam rot, Took 10'" drivers out and noticed the frame was 12" I had a never used pair of professional JBL woofers in boxes, and they bolted in perfectly! Once they broke in OMG! No drilling no nothing just bolted in!
I bought white van speakers a long time ago, and you just get what you deserve when you get yourself involved in a shady deal. There is quite a big market of DIY speaker kits, and I think there you get the best bang for the buck. If you go for vintage, you need good knowledge and some luck.
Nice overview and bargains are out there, picked up some Altec Lansing Santana's first version for 200 and they were an easy fix, some light sanding/staining and recapping. Also picked up some Carver AL llls for 450 fully functional and in good shape. Good sounding bargains are the Advent Heritage or Laureates, typical foam rot on the main drivers but nice cabinets and nice sounding. Found a pair of speakers that came from a company in Tarp Germany (soldier married a native German and brought them back) for $50 called Scan Akustik now called Phonar Akustik (still in business) that are great sounding speakers. The owner was importing Danish speakers from 4 different companies then in 1983 decided to build his own. There are some speakers like the JBL 100s or HPM-100s that people go ga ga over but depending on your ears and your room whatever sounds good to me works for me even if they are 50 dollar bargain finds.
I love vintage speakers. However, the cabinet quality was not up to pair on many of them. But, the Drivers were very high quality! Never been thrilled with Epi/Genesis stuff.( Had them). But some to look out for are : Old Electrovoice speakers. I have a pair of 1962 Marquis. Old JBL's, old Klipsch, old AR's, Old KLH, Celestion's, QUAD'S, KEF's, Focal's, ADS, Dynaco, Frasier, Bozak, Altec, University,Stevens,Goodman's,etc....
Thanks for the great video I really enjoyed it lots of cool stuff four of my friends passed away this summer and I ended up with all their junk well it's actually not junk stereoe quipment it's overwhelming I'm old and I can only fix so much but a lot of cool stuff I'll keep watching keeps me inspired keeps me busy about what's the next thing I'm going to fix some of the stuff's not fixable it's just for parts have a great day
My most recent score is a pair of vandersteen model 1 from goodwill in the light grey cover for 85 bucks. They needed a woofer repair or replacement but they were definitely a sweet speaker
And the Dahlquist are 'lookers', in my opinion, and hiding behind their good looks is the most Frankenstein-array and arrangement of drivers I've seen, LOL. If I recall correctly, a good friend of mine had been looking for a replacement midrange driver for his original Snell Type A which I believe was a Philips driver (squawker, not mid-bass driver which was harder to find). He discovered the Snell midrange was the same as used in the DQ-10 and he eventually located a pair of those for the repair. I recall the driver baskets were octagonal in shape.
Always remember that if they are lightweight for their size, it is not likely they are good - but there are exceptions. Truly damaged speaker drivers are a hard thing to take on
I had a set of Sylvania speakers from the early 70s. A 3-way with 12in woofer, 2in dome mid and .75in tweeter. I forget the model number but the weren't half bad.
I have roughly 40 pairs of speakers..Just picked up a pair of B&W zmf vm1 mid 80's two ways for $10.00 Cdn.2 months ago I scooped up some mint Polk Audio Monitor 5's for $40.00 .😊
Enjoyable video. I have had a bunch of speakers over the years and then I found my OMG speakers in 2007 at a church garage sale for $150. Altec Model 17 604-8g studio monitors. I quit searching and just listen to music.
I got 2 pairs of realistic optimus t-200 speakers for $50 and they are fantastic speakers. I was really surprised how expensive they were new ( $3,500 a pair in today's dollars) . I also have a Sony SSU3000 speaker that are very good and I am glad I picked them up as I usually pass on Japanese speakers
How about the lines of Advent and Jensen speakers and Realistic were my favorites. I even had Cerwin Vegas which I really like so many brands out there.
I have enjoyed Boston Acoustic, currently got a pair of A120 for 70$, just need to refoam the passive radiators. Boxes are perfect. Still have HD9s. Saw on a thread the Hd series parts were good but A series had better parts. Infinity SL series sound similar. Would like to hear some Ads. The availability in older speakers seems to go in cycles. Seems like this month a lot out there. I prefer wood looking box not the Black.
I've had several of the desirable vintage brands: Advents, KLH, Cerwin Vega, Bose. All at reasonable to low cost. My current favorites are JBL C50s, which cost me serious $$. I found a second set of JBLs, In a Barzilay console/speaker cabinet set up. Stereo pieces were gone, other than a Dual 1019 turntable. I'll be working on that next.
I found an ElectoVoice Empire, circa 1955, at the Goodwill outlet in decent condition for $15. Another time they had a pair of ESS AMT 1 towers for $35 that just need a little cosmetic work.
I had a beautiful Electrovoice Georgian I picked up off a CL ad about 20 years ago for $75. It also was from the mid 50’s. Pre stereo so the were only sold as singles. Huge speaker in a beautiful cabinet. I used it in a mono system.
I have a pair of jbl 500.... I know I know, I haven’t heard or compared them with anything else but ya know,I’ve been pretty happy with them. Thoughts?
It seems like I always get my amplifiers right Lancaster but I don't usually get the speakers perfect I have some beautiful Technics vintage speakers SB lLx 3 they seem pretty good but the ones that I'm playing in my room is a pair of paradigm performance Series 2-way speakers and they cranked pretty damn good and then I also have a pair of humongous piano black Yamaha is there about 200 Watts and they're about 5 ft 5 tall anyways absolutely love your channel maybe you can give me Insight on I'm playing them out of a Marantz 2220 believe me that thing has plenty of power I know it's nothing like yours which is rated at what 50 or 70 wines are near 20 watts for channel but dang it sounds beautiful and it's in Flawless Mint Condition I bought it for $400 and it was recently serviced professionally and looks and sounds absolutely wonderful
My best buy are Wharfdales w70d for $50.Klipsch forte 2 for $80. These I need to do a total cosmetic reforestation. Klh 5 for $18 ,goodwill . The holy grail Jbl olympus 50sr8 for $700 from the original owmer.these need some surrounds and veneer work
I heard you say you could be interested Ohm speakers. I have a set of Ohm C2 speakers. Would like to sell to a vintage buyer. We have to downsize. Thanks . Kevin Brown
Mostly Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for me. Estate sales and even yard/garage sales can yield nice speakers. I've gotten one distressed pair from a thrift store.
I'm 66 years old I brought a pair of JBL L150 Tower speakers when I was in the Military in Germany back in 1979. At that time they were $760 a pair. Now they worth 3 to $4,000 dollars a pair.. But I'm pretty sure you're familiar with the L100 but no one seems to be familiar with there big brother the L150? I replaced the paper cones with replacement JBL speakers which are much better than the paper cones and I don't have to re-cone them ever again. Yes I still have them and I will never sell them. I use them as my right and left speakers in my HomeTtheater and they're also powered buy ADCOM power Amp which is ran through my Marantz 6015 receiver.🎶 The guy that was in the chair with the L100 would have been blown out the room by the L150🎛🔊
I bought a pair of old Advents for 20.00. Was it a bargain. Well. The cabinets are pretty bad. The surrounds where rotten of course. I have made them look better and fixed the surrounds. They sound ok. Look ok from a distance. Not sure if i would still call it a bargain lol.
I actually shot some footage about some but left it out since I bought them new. I have some little Dayton speakers that I bought a few years ago. They helped get me back into hi-fi, so in that respect, they were great. I haven't A/B compared them with any of my other speakers.
Man toss all those speakers you showed here except the JBL monitors and never think about that again! (I had those when I was too young to appreciate what they were... oh the horror :-)
Nah, don't toss them. As a hobby, I've rebuilt several older box speakers, and they can be made to sound really respectable. With some added bracing, resonance treatment, driver and crossover replacement, I've been able to transform those older box speakers. Were they audiophile grade after the rebuilds? Probably not, but they were quite respectable. I've had several friends hear them before and after the rebuilds, and they were stunned at the improvement. There was no placebo effect by the way, they never knew they were ever rebuilt before hearing them after the improvement. It's not a money maker, but most hobbies aren't. As with most hobbies, there's no profit in it, I find it enjoyable.
man i picked up a set of Wilson audio watt puppy 3s with bad tweeters. Hooked e'm up toa hafler dh200 that i totally went through back in07 toroidal transformer class a frontend boards. on;y things original are the case and Toshiba transistors and one of the best preamps nad ever made the116 with xlr output to amp . They sound horrible. mids are way too bright. hopefully its crossover issues will know soon enough. will drag them to my forever system. will tell you about it if your interested. thanks for giving good info.
I have an old Denon 7.1 receiver driving 3 pair of JBL monitors, and a good JBL centre. Along with an old Cerwin Vega sub, nobody does bass better than C.V. This system sounds pretty good, to say the least. But I've heard some of the JBL stuff from china, it's exactly what JBL used to be called by the cork sniffers, Junk But Loud. I would not buy that crap with someone else's money.
Tell the customer it needs a new filter cap, gonna be about $55.. how much is the cap? About 4 bucks. Why $55.. its gonna take me a 1/2 hour to get to it and a 1/2 hour to put it back together. I have to unsolder 5 wires to the board to get it out. And unsolder and resolder the new one. .... my solder station and suppilies cost about $100, F5 fader deox is $20 a can, brushes, and towels arent free either.
missed out on some 250 buck Heresys on Marketplace about an hour from my place just south of Portland this year. They had only been up a few minutes and as soon as i messaged him there was someone on their way to grab em. Though I have scored a lot of super cheap or free gear this year.... a Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS for 25 bucks, a Denon receiver with Definitve subwoofer and satellites and Boston Accoustics T930s altogether for free, Advent OLA pair in good shape for 100, Pioneer SX-535 in great shape for 100, and a Pioneer SX-737, great Technics qd33 turntable and Pioneer CS-33's altogether for 300, a pair of Paradigm Mini Monitor 2's for 30, a working and not much needed Bose 551 Spacial receiver and 901 series 3 set (needs refoam) and a set of 901 series 5's in great shape altogether for 300,. The Bose 551 receiver is a cool looking piece , and has the EQ i need built in! Been a fun year.
If you're looking for ohm speakers get the c2s the rest of them aren't that impressive and if you're looking for Boston acoustics I had the a100s and they were really good I bet the a120s and a 150s and a 200s are even better
Thanks!

I sold hi-fi in NYC back in the 70’s, here is my list. IMF tls-50 transmission line, ADS 710/ 810 , Dahlquist 10,
I love vintage speakers.
Lovely stuff👍
Thanks for the great video I really enjoyed it lots of cool stuff four of my friends passed away this summer and I ended up with all their junk well it's actually not junk stereoe quipment it's overwhelming I'm old and I can only fix so much but a lot of cool stuff I'll keep watching keeps me inspired keeps me busy about what's the next thing I'm going to fix some of the stuff's not fixable it's just for parts have a great day
Sorry you lost four of your friends may they RIP
My landlord at Markham hill had some Klipsch La Scalas or similar in 1985. Wow!
Marc! Those La Scalas in the video belong to Bob S. Impressive beasts!
New to the channel great info thanks
Always remember that if they are lightweight for their size, it is not likely they are good - but there are exceptions.
Truly damaged speaker drivers are a hard thing to take on
I like allot of the CerwinVega! Models, however lots of people don’t seem to appreciate them. I’m curious of your thoughts on CV?
I haven't had or listened to any yet, and I don't know much about them, but I hope to try some eventually.
I had a set of Sylvania speakers from the early 70s. A 3-way with 12in woofer, 2in dome mid and .75in tweeter. I forget the model number but the weren't half bad.
DlK 1 1/2 bought new in 77 . Still have them
I have roughly 40 pairs of speakers..Just picked up a pair of B&W zmf vm1 mid 80's two ways for $10.00 Cdn.2 months ago I scooped up some mint Polk Audio Monitor 5's for $40.00 .😊
Enjoyable video.
I picked up a pair of Genesis 220s. I'm getting them refoamed this week, can wait to listen to them with the ST70.
I just recently got a pair of JBL Apollos, le15a drivers and lx5 crossovers for $800
How about the lines of Advent and Jensen speakers and Realistic were my favorites. I even had Cerwin Vegas which I really like so many brands out there.
King crimson for the win !
There is no 'End-Point' in a hobby anyway.
Thoughts?
Too many models for me to know! 🤣 But if you like them, then they're awesome!
excellent speaker buyers guide
Thanks . Kevin Brown
Where are you?
@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi I am in Illinois
I'd rather get some locally. 😉
Your loss
I enjoy your videos, the only thing I suggest buy a cheap wireless microphone I paid less than $20 for mine and it sounds really good. carry on
Where to buy vintage speakers?
I am in temple texas
I have never heard of those d8 speakers but they look very impressive and I bet that Zeppelin tune sounded pretty heavy on those
Yes!
I think you're forgetting about the pioneer HPM
@johnkendrick7304 No, mentioned the HPM 100 specifically, although I've never heard one firsthand.
Oops, replied through my other channel!
I've got twelve 15" Realistic musical instrument speakers for sale? And a bunch of Realistic (Motorola) 3" x 7" pizo horns?
What model horn?
How are Dayton Audio speakers?
I actually shot some footage about some but left it out since I bought them new. I have some little Dayton speakers that I bought a few years ago. They helped get me back into hi-fi, so in that respect, they were great. I haven't A/B compared them with any of my other speakers.
Dyanco a25 a 180,bucks still wonderful rubber surround a plus
I scored a pair of JBL L65A for $80 at an estate sale. They're my favorite and will never sell them.
I have JBL TR series 15" I need coil, cone, just the parts to replace but not available here in Manila..
Where are you located at
Corvallis, Oregon
I bought KG4's for $200
My first pair of speakers I picked up 2 years ago was a pair of Bozak Concert Grands. I will never buy new HiFi now lol
man i picked up a set of Wilson audio watt puppy 3s with bad tweeters.
You mentioed Bose 901s. Best to stay away from the ones with the foam surrounds on the speakers unless you have a ton of money to refoam 18 speakers
Tried any EVs out ?
No, I haven't!
52 minutes not a word about Cerwin Vega?
I said I left some good ones out!
ADS, that's Grundig in Europe.
Braun
I once picked up a pair of Klipsch KSF 8.5 towers, for $100. Those were fun. I left them behind with the ex-wife. She was not fun.
Ouch, sorry to hear that!
I have a pair of jbl L-100 from 1972 forsale and in mint condition with upgraded crossovers and terminals 400 dollars minimum
I'm lucky if a job like that only takes an hour!
@Lancaster_Hi-Fi I agree. An hour is a quick job. It takes me an hour just to start cleaning most bpc's.
Most consumers have no clue the cost of gear and supplies needed to do a simple job. Not to mention the years of experience.
missed out on some 250 buck Heresys on Marketplace about an hour from my place just south of Portland this year.
Have you seen Hoarders? 🤣
@Lancaster_Hi-Fi 😆😆😆😆 Exactly. Thankfully my other half also has multiple hobbies and is very understanding.
If you're looking for ohm speakers get the c2s the rest of them aren't that impressive and if you're looking for Boston acoustics I had the a100s and they were really good I bet the a120s and a 150s and a 200s are even better
Most vintage is junk. None of these sound good. I'd rather just listen with headphones.
OK! You do you.
