really basic question about painting: why do you need to paint multiple layers of paint ? why not just paint the shade you require in one layer ? thanks for the video.

Yeah it's because of highlights. If u paint everything in the first layer it's a chance u will most likely ruin the highlights which will make the painting ugly so that's why we go light and basic color layer to dark layers + it's much harder to draw without them
