      What best ? Garmin Fenix 5 plus or Polar Grit X?

  • @ChaseTheSummit
    @ChaseTheSummit 4 года назад +9

    Nice review Ray! I've found that the Heart Rate sensor becomes more accurate the longer your activity is in my testing with the Grit X. Pretty weird! Almost like it needs to "settle in" compared to my Coros or Garmin products. Still, I think this is a pretty exciting release for Polar and it's sure going to give the Coros Apex a run for its money at this price point.

  • @oliwergott
    @oliwergott 4 года назад +2

    Thank you for your review! Brilliant and to the point, great work.
    Just left Polar although I really loved the web surface of polar flow and the Vantage M. What I was looking for was a navigation feature that shows maps and gives you information about your surrounding / environment so you can easily find your ways in unknown areas. When first reading about the integration I thought about coming back to Polar. But as the Grit X is not using maps to provide additional information, I will stay with Garmin, enjoy the routing feature in a whole, listening to music and be happy with even longer endurance of the battery.
    To view and analyze my data I use runalyze that provides me with information that even the flow app does not offer. Nice try Polar with a nice price tag, but I don't regret the 200 EUR plus I had to spend.

    • @burtonBG
      @burtonBG 4 года назад

      I don't know, man. Imo, map on a sport watch (even outdoor sports watch) is overkill and it increases price tag. Basic breadcrumbs navigation and back to start is more than enough. If I am in a completely unknown area, I will definitely have my phone anyways, so I will use it for navigation instead of a tiny watch.

    • @oliwergott
      @oliwergott 4 года назад

      burtonBG That depends on the kind of Running you do. You will simply geht lost ob a Trail run in the forest when you have multiple ways to choose from when you have no graphical map.
      Especially when you are exhausted navigation can become an issue...
      Using a phone in winter on a run with more than three hours gets the battery to its limit very fast...

    • @burtonBG
      @burtonBG 4 года назад

      @@oliwergott My point is, you don't need a full map in the case you described. If you get lost you can use back to start. And if you do trail run in a completely unknown area I bet you'll plan your route in advance anyways, so you can plan it Komoot and use it on the watch.

  • @trailzrock2
    @trailzrock2 4 года назад +4

    I love the look of the Polar Grit, but Polar just keeps messing things up for me to commit to pick it over Garmin. Why is it so hard to add ANT+ along with Bluetooth and make the watch compatible with everything out there? Why leave power sensors out? Why not allow to change data fields from the watch itself? Having touch screen would make it an awesome feature. Why not add full on Maps with turn by turn directions? Why!? Why!? Why!?☹️ Ray, why don't you get a Chinese watch company make you a sports GPS watch to your specs? Why!? Or join up with Coros and show them how it's done!? Why!? Why!? Why!? For now I'm sticking to my Garmin FR 945. At least till something better comes out 🤔😉

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, there's no real reason not to add ANT+. The chipset supports it, it's a trivial thing to enable. Note though that the Grit X does support power meters. Maps and such is an entirely different beast though. It's hard...really...really hard.
      As for making a GPS watch myself - nah, that's the fastest way I can think of it lose a lot of money. It's death by a thousand cuts. That's what'll ultimately do in most competitors to the majors. Everyone has their own 1% feature. Meaning, that feature is the most important thing to them...yet it's used by 1% of people. Garmin has had roughly 13 years of adding 1% features - which is why people going back to their products, even if people don't realize why.

    Hey Ray I was wondering if you had any insight on what could be causing such wild variances with my swim data on my Grit X? Sometimes it will show laps in Polar Flow sometimes it doesn't. Some swims show in meters then I've had other show the distance in mileage. Also it will randomly just stop counting laps. Usually misses about 50m a session.
    It's very frustrating. I've reached out to Polar for support but their response didn't resolve the issue.
    I've tried switching lanes at the pool wondering if a different location inside the building could cause it to not accurately count. At this point I don't know what to do.
    Overall I like the watch but the inaccuracies in the swim data has me looking for a new watch.

    Do you know if the straps from other watches will fit the Vantage M...fancy this green strap on mine or the orange that the Ignite comes with

    • @Hustlate
      @Hustlate 4 года назад

      Vantage m has 22mm straps so ignite is out of the question. It has 20 mm straps. It seems that the grit x straps will work with vantage m. Vantage m has those weird wings on the end of it but it really doesn't need them. I have used straps from Garmin (vivoactive 4) and some off brand generic straps.

    Weird question but how is the quality of the vibration compared to the Vantage M? The M was loud but not strong, so it was hard to feel when I had headphones on.

      Ognjen Šešlija I don’t believe any major phone players have put dual and GPS in yet through, correct? The challenge is also the battery hit for wearables. In talking to Garmin it essentially erases all of the gains made with the Sony chipset.

    I picked up this device. It worked great on a road run in town, but it completely failed on every trail run because... trees? The GPS route tracked perfectly, but the distance and pace were completely wrong from the start, and there is no way to correct that. It doesn't meet the minimum requirements of a GPS unit. I haven't seen anyone test this device on trails yet, so it's not coming out in the reviews. I would stay far away from this device.

    I'm wearing the Polar Grit x for a month now. The pedometer is the worst I've ever had. Normally, I can reach just 10,000 steps in one working day, the Polar Grit X counts over 20,000. I tried it with and without continuous HR. There are even 200+ steps counted at a 10min Car drive. The compass must be recalibrated every time you hike! The touchscreen reacts terribly. Obviously it is a defective watch! I am very disappointed with the watch!
