If I remember correct I tested it with a power supply. But I will test it with batteries again. Sorry if it was wrong. Edit: found some weak AAA batteries. It turn on at lowest level and it turning off after a few seconds. When checking battery level it blink 3 times so built in lipo battery is full. And I can't step up any higher level and power on more than a few seconds until I remove at least one AAA battery. Maybe I had an early model and Nitecore has changed the firmware a little.
Great video! I've had my NU35 for a year and a half now. I use it all day 5 days a week in close quarters on internal battery. I've used it for backpacking with additional lithium AAA batteries. I prefer the beam of my Black Diamond headlamp for backpacking. But the NU35 for all day close work for sure! And I never have to throw out used AAA batteries! Also, after a year and a half of daily used I just learned about the beacon mode, sos mode and the 2 led mode 😮 Thanks!

you are wrong in that you have too take out one aaa battery, when the trippel a is empty. then just turn on the buildt in battery
