When I watch My Dinner With Andre, it always feels like the internal dialogue of one person, conflicting ideas and feelings being challenged by the way our minds rationalise as a coping mechanism against thoughts that scare us, maybe like discovery and self awearness butting up against fear and self preservation.
This is still one of my favourite movies. Oh there are all sorts of movies which are better in many aspects, but few movies can hold ones attention when set in a single room and involve only two characters. That is something special which requires excellent writing and incredible performances.
LOL, I've been bingeing Andre the Giant videos... just watched one with Cary Elwes, just assumed this was on that track. Never dawned on me that it was Dinner with Andre. I thought it was going to be about 17 steaks and 46 gallons of beer and wine. LOL
Funny you mention that, as there was a similar joke in Mad Magazine back around the mid '80s. I can't even remember what the article was about, but they had drawn a VHS box for "My Dinner with Andre the Giant." Funny stuff.
Beyond the obvious love for these actors and this film, why were these interviews made? Where they part of a larger documentary? I looked it up and learned that these are clips from the Criterion Collection's Special Edition DVD of 'My Dinner With Andre' and that the interviewer, filmmaker and friend of both men, Noah Baumbach, was chosen by Andre' and Wally as their interlocutor and filmed at the Criterion office. The reason the quality of these clips are so bad and the light flickers, is because K Jones recorded the TV playing the video with a video camera facing it, as opposed to making a digital copy. Not that I mind ;) as the content is wonderful.
Hi K.Jones, It's ghurron briscoe: Your interview with actor Wallace Shawn recalls fond memories of the film: Dinner with Andre, and all the successful events that lead to this interview! Success senor (K.Jones)
I really enjoyed this interview. I have a technical question about how it was shot (or at least the, presumed, choice of how it was shot). This was posted on September 2nd, 2011. Is there a reason it was filmed to look like it was filmed in the early 80s? (The film style?) It blends wonderfully with the movie itself. Thanks kindly for any insights.
New York bases American filmmaker, he directed Wallace Shaun in a very minor role in his 2019 film “Marriage Story”. His films are great- Marriage Story, Meyerowitz Stories, Frances Ha, The Squid and the Whale, even White Noise was pretty good. Take a look!
I just read a long transcript of this film and its dialog and I can't help thinking that the writer is just a garden variety neurotic. As a young man, it affected me differently. I should watch the entire film soon to see what I think of these ideas again. But seriously, much of what is discussed seems like psychopathology that doesn't enter into my own life or way of thinking. Ha ha ha. :-)
Maybe you r too numb for fully comprehension. By your laughing, see... a castrated lamb will remain happy coz it will never know the meaning of what was it's lost. Don't blame your age, i might even be younger than you. Just see it this way, the same way one can read Schopenhauer and never commit suicide... it is what it is, lucid or not, go thru Heidegger and accept. If you r cut for comprehension, use everything's decay to be better however you can. If it's too hard for you to get the feeling, not even bother about it, forget the abstract and close your eyes to the indifference of existence... you'll certainly be doing just fine.
Watch this film and then go watch Sunset Limited with Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. That's another hour and a half long discussion and compare the two.
Joe F I’m probably not a huge fan of his politically. The ideas of “wage slavery” etc don’t really appeal to me. I think some hierarchies are justifiable and the market isn’t a bad institution to have things based on and maybe in general organized around. But maybe from a psychological perspective certain dynamics can feel like slavery and people have to be warned to not get trapped and try to hold onto self esteem. But I don’t think we should be blaming institutions supplying opportunity, however weak the opportunity is. And the State can’t just hand out money without that having long term consequences I’d imagine. I mean Chomsky wouldn’t say he favors the State, I know, but he seems less critical of it than the market Well that was quite a rant, but I did hear his early political writings are pretty good. I haven’t read them so I don’t know; but the “manufacturing consent” concept is definitely hugely true.
I tried to watch this movie yesterday. It was raved about when it came out. The critics all looooooved it! Which means it's an artsy piece of CRAP!!! Andre is a nutty fruitcake character. I like Wallace Shawn he is a fantastic character actor.
Plot twist: this is a sequel to the film
+H1K8T95 Outstanding comment.
+H1K8T95 Haha that was good!
H1K8T95 lol I really didn't expect this to be the first comment I'd read on this! You understood the movie well by this comment haha
Damn, you got me there

Sometimes I can’t decide whether Wally has aged extra well or just didn’t youth very well back in the day.
Perpetually middle aged
LOL
He was 27 then and looked the same as he does today 🤣
magic of male pattern baldness
hew as actually closer to 37 when he made the movie
*38
When he made My Dinner with Andre he was 37.
37.

Inconceivable!! Love this Guy!! I don't see him enough which is sad!
Watch him on Young Sheldon
The entire movie is on youtube, just check out my favorites list!
Thumbs up if you came here expecting it to be dinner with Andre the Giant.
Why was it dumb? Andre the Giant is a lot more interesting than some stupid play.

A 👍 just for your name
Thanks for the interview.
inconceivable
It’s a dinosaur I mean one ? I just don’t think I can’t take that kind of rejection
Inconceivable how great an actor this is. Too bad his comic work overshadows his true craft.
for those interested in dialogs like in that movie you can watch the dialogs here on youtube with Krishnamurit and Bohm
Vasile Surdu thank you@
google those two names and pay attention.
Awesome. One of my favorite movies ever!

He played Rex in toy story 1995
It took me so long to realize that this was Noah Baumbach conducting the interview
Possible to tell me more about Noah Baumbach - very intriguing - Thanks !

Jesus Christ, that's Noah Baumbach.
He was old as a baby.
The Smartest Man in The World!
Physiognomy is real, folks.

Sunset Limited is trash.
People that don't love 'the theatre' have fained the experience.
What's wrong with the weird flashing light in the room?
who is the interviewer?
Noah Baumbach
This is fun
Seems like he might be an infj to me
Joe F I’m not sure but he seems to get along with Chomsky who they say is one as well. Definitely an introvert though. You think Andre. Is an enfp?
Joe F okay. Was cool to get a reply on that so quick on a video not about personality type. Looks like you like at least two things that are awesome

Hard to tell if this is a troll or if you are genuinely stupid. I guess we will never know…
:-)
I loathe this interviewer
