I have the same Rolex Explorer MK2 39mm and I really love your review because I feel EXACTLY the same way about it. You convey it perfectly. I find it interesting that just 3 months after you made this video that the 39mm was discontinued and returned to its former dimension of 36mm. Also a two tone version... So now your 214270 is going for twice what you paid for it just months ago!
Gotta say I have to agree, I purchased my 214270 just over a month ago and absolutely in love with it. I've a Tudor pelagos LHD and a omega SM300 which was purchased 17 years ago and honestly the exp1 is perfect and makes me think about selling the others. Wear in good health 👏👍
Great review. The 39mm Explorer is perfect, I also have the Explorer 214270 MK2. After having a 36mm Explorer from 96 and just didn't feel right, too small for me.
This Explorer is the most multi-ocassion Time Piece from Rolex; from a Tuxedo to a T-Shirt and and pair of nice Chino's. It also wears so well, without attracting much attention. Very comfortable on the wrist. Like many time piece experts said: it's the Quentisential Rolex. Nuff Said.
I never considered an Explorer until they came out with the 39mm. Brilliant!!! I love mine. Have not worn any of my other watches since getting the Explorer. It’s just that good. Cheers.
I owned the 114270 and it just felt too small on the wrist in rotation with a speedy and skx007. I made the upgrade to the 214270 MKII and like you I sold most of my watches. Its the one and done for sure. Amazing to me coming from a 30 plus collection over the years, now down to 4.
I'm waiting for the Explorer, and I bet once I get it I will not want more watches (as you mentioned) or wear much of my current collection anymore. With the exception that I do want a Reverso and maybe the new Speedmaster with its new bracelet. Once I have those I might be about to get rid of everything else, with the exception of my Planet Ocean and maybe my SKX 009. Is that the Seiko OEM Jubilee?
Great review by the way. I'm kicking myself in the a$$ I should of bought one 3 years ago. They were so many available. Plenty on MK1 Explorers available used, less than retail.
It is, for me, the greatest watch of all time. I love mine. Can I ask do you have any hairline scratches on your sapphire crystal? I have a few that you can only see under direct light.
I had a 214270 Mk2 for almost 3 years...sold it and bought a 114270 / 36 mm and never looked back. .Never loved the 39mm, its size and proportions (especially I never got my eyes adjusted to the too large bezel). What really bugged me was that the fat case of the 39 mm Explorer looked stupid on a leather strap because of the uber fat lugs. Loved its solid build thou.
I would buy it off you if you sell it. These are difficult but not impossible to find at an AD. Waitlists vary from AD to AD depending how big your city population is and how many AD's are in your location. I'm located in Chicago. Lots of corporate clients that buy Rolex watches in bulk for retirement/bonus gifts, lots of VIP wealthy clients in a city where there are no more than 5 Rolex AD's. I'm on a waitlist at one AD. I was told around 4-6 months depending on shipments. One thing is for sure, there's more demand for the new OP GMT's, and Submariners, but we don't know what Rolex has in store for the Explorer I 39mm. Will they up the size? I hope not even though the 41mm OP wear more like 40mm. They might measure close to 40mm. Will they put a new movement upgrade? I think so. When will Rolex release new 2021 models? April? September? No one knows.
I think you’re absolutely right about the local population size and demographic of the AD. Thankfully mine was small and friendly and happy for my custom :-)
@@watchesandstuff6837 Yes sir, I live in Chicago where there are 6-8 Rolex AD's (located in wealthy areas), one just re-opened due to riots last summer. We have a population 3.5 million in the city, plus 4 million in the surrounding suburbs, plus another 3-5 million in the surrounding states (that do not have any Rolex AD w/in a 100 mil radius). Then add guys/ people that can afford a Rolex. Plus the wealthy and VIP clients..... It's difficult to get a Rolex even if you are a low end VIP. Anything over a Submariner no date is almost impossible to get w/no purchase history or AD relationship. It mostly luck
Too bad he didn't pick up a Traska Summiteer for around $600.00 with the regulated Miyota movement and the treated stainless steel case and bracelet... +/- one sec. per day and no scratches on the stainless.
Useful video. I find your comment on the 36 vs 39mm size a bit odd though - you repeat how the 39mm size is fantastic and it fits perfectly, seemingly oblivious to the fact that other people have different sized wrists, and may wear their watch in a different position to you. Regardless, enjoy :)
36 is small. >40 is getting large, especially for Swiss watches that have proportionally longer lugs (compared to say, Seiko). 39mm is a sweet spot for many, and a very well regarded size in the watch community. Just look at the noise the Black Bay 58 caused. But not "oblivious" to different wrist sizes, I can't possibly possibly speak for others, I just have a good idea from the comments I read in my social media circles. I am, at the end of the day, only speaking for my self. I can only be subjective.
@@watchesandstuff6837 I'm not saying it's not a great size for many. You call BS on those who would prefer a 36mm, because you say the 39mm size fits perfectly. It fits you perfectly. The Tudor BB58 is different because it's a dive watch with a large rotating bezel, and it looks right for a dive watch to be bigger than a dressier watch. The face of the explorer 39mm is larger and the look is different. Do you know the circumference of your wrist?
U have lost ur collecting tendencies ? From the sound of it the grand seiko , Tudor 36 , and the speed master u should try a sub or gmt before u give up.
i was going to put up some camera stuff, and did a couple, but i took them down. I'm gonna leave this as watches only, even if i may never post another :-)
Maybe... I did get large discounts on the 2 Tudors i bought via Chrono24. (More than 25% off the MSRP and both watches were new, unused and still had stickers on).

I think of all the watches in the Rolex catalogue, this one will age the best as the years go by.
Great review. I got mine in december 2019 and it fits perfect.
But i also love the glide lock - clasp of my submariner 116610LN.

Yes, OEM Jubilee. I've had the Strapcode before, but it's not that good. Not an easy fit and not as flexible.
@@watchesandstuff6837 Thanks!
Same here, Joe! I will have the Explorer in a month and have always wanted a Reverso Duoface. Unbeatable combo for me.

I agree with everything you said about the Explorer. I have been thinking about getting one for a while. Can't wait for the AD's to reopen.
You won't regret it.

Congratulations on the exit! Something I dream of accomplishing some day haha
Big collector?
Well I'd like to call that, because as someone that wears a 36mm watch I can absolutely say 36 mm is better period.
39 wears like a dinner plate
Dinner plate - lol.
Respectfully disagree on that point. But great that there is options for both of us

Man that Explorer looks absolutely beat to hell. I guess it is a tool watch though...
It certainly is. It takes a while when it’s your first, but after about 5 months you stop babying it. At least, that’s how it was for me.
Seems you wear the watch very low on your wrist. Looks uncomfortable.
No. Very comfortable. But it might depend on the quality of the bracelet.
