Totally agree that it is disrespectful. However, in context, politicians come and go and the representatives at State level will be with the Governors of each State and the Governor General. As long as the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition are in the mix, then that’s all that matters.

At the end of the day it’s not for the Australian Government to make the decision. Australian citizens would need to go to the polls to vote to become a Republic which we have done a few time previously. The Australian citizens are happy to keep things exactly how they are, the only noise being heard is from a small handful of politicians.

Australia has had referendums in the past and chose to remain a part of the Commonwealth and the Royal Family continue to hold a place in our hearts. Currently there are “professional” activists that complain and protest at whatever is being expouted. It’s a very short visit and I think and hope it will be a favourable one.

In all honesty it’s not who we are, it’s not what we do, so I’m quite befuddled by this 😢Charles is well loved in Australia ❤ I’m leaning towards him getting ill hence why Prince William intervenes. People have always misjudged KCIII. He is a formidable person that knows how to turn weaknesses into strengths.

Shanta, this reading is very concerning.
Welcoming the King and Queen to Australia is the least these state premiers can do as elected representatives of their states. Their failure to personally attend the welcoming reception in Canberra is petty and indefensible. They’re just playing politics.
They need to remember that all premiers and ministers have sworn allegiance to our Monarch.
The Republican movement makes a lot of noise.
A referendum was held back in 1999. Australians were asked to vote on two proposed laws to alter the Constitution to establish the Commonwealth of Australia as a republic and to alter the Constitution to insert a preamble.
Both proposed laws were not carried.
The only recent demonstrations that come to mind have been pro-Palestine rallies.
The King has a sincere fondness for Australia and lived here for six months in 1966 while attending Geelong Grammar’s Timbertop campus.
There is an upcoming state election in Queensland at the end of the month and a federal election next year. Interesting times ahead for our country.
I hope the King and Queen are not embarrassed in any way as I would feel so ashamed.

A handful of people for a Republic are trying to make their voices heard while KC is here, also none of the Premiers from the States or Territories are going to meet him in Canberra at the welcome meeting. ….pack of A/holes who to get and do the jobs they are doing have to pledge their loyalty to the Crown! Unbelievable!! I’m feeling pretty angry about it, especially being his first visit as the Monarch, where we should show him loyalty , respect and support.

Sadly the majority of the people I speak to have no time for Charles and Camilla, due to their affair during his marriage to Diana and his tampon conversation, there is not much respect for them. How many people say things in EXTREMELY PRIVATE conversations with their partners that they’d be happy having reported to the whole world? Too many people want to know their every move, that’s why they take centre stage every time. They live for attention and that’s what the public are giving them. I’m an Australian currently living overseas, if the reports are true with many politicians backing out of meeting with King Charles how petty and pathetic! The trip to Australia has been on the cards and has been planned for a long time. King Charles is battling cancer and he is still trying to make an effort to visit Australia, we should honour that effort and the long standing relationship between our countries. Since when have we become such an inhospitable country. What the hell are these politicians doing?! In the past people were able to put aside their personal beliefs and wishes and were able to host foreign dignitaries without too much of an issue, including foreign dignitaries whose countries had differing ideologies to our own. Now this, how ridiculous! All for political point scoring. I don’t think that it will go down well with so many members of the Australian public including people that want Australia to be a republic. My impression is that King Charles is well liked in Australia. I think that many people understand that King Charles has been going through a rough trot (as older Aussies would say) battling cancer (which many people could relate to either as someone who has been through it themselves or know of someone who has) and dealing with an errant son. King Charles has become more relatable because of these issues. I really hope that the Australian public can get out there and give him a bit of support and a boost. If Australian politicians can’t do their job as hosts then we should try to pick up the slack. If they were foreign dignitaries from any other countries there is no way our politicians would do this. How rude!

    • @mssheard8862
      @mssheard8862 День назад

@@evelynsneddon1810 I think you misunderstand. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries. Only 14 of those countries, apart from the UK, currently have Charles III as their monarch and ceremonial head of state. These are known as Commonwealth Realms and include Australia, New Zealand and Canada amongst others.
The King was actually elected by the member states to be the Head of the Commonwealth itself, taking over from the late Queen whose life work and legacy it was, as you say. Even if one (or all) of the 14 Commonwealth Realms voted to withdraw from rule by the British Monarch and become an independent Republic, it would still be a member of the Commonwealth and the King would still be the Head of the Commonwealth.
Charles is only saying he would understand if Australia voted to become a Republic. I was only saying that those Australian leaders who back independence from the UK and are therefore boycotting any royal events, are being very rude to Charles as Head of the Commonwealth.

Not sure enough of my history but I think it's the first time something like this has happened. Australian states and their Premiers have LOTS of power here. Australia only became a federated nation in 1901. Up until then, we were a group of independent colonies , each with their own laws and parliaments
