    I will be climbing Pike's peak in July. We are staying in Manitou Springs for a couple of days to help. If I am going to take Diamox, should I start a few days before going up Pike's peak or start taking them the day the hike starts. We will be staying over night at Barr Camp at 10K elevation instead of going the whole distance in one day. Thank you for your information on this - nice job :)

    Hi Swati! Thanks for all the wonderful and informative videos! Would you recommend Diamox for VoF and Hemkund Sahib? I'm a first time trekker and i don't know if I'm allergic to sulfa drugs. • @Indiahikes

      I think you can avoid a preventive course. Just carry the strip with you. If it's an emergency, then you can take Diamox. But that's not likely to happen at Valley of Flowers.

    Hi Swathi, thanks for the information. Sadly I am allergic to sulfa-based drugs, aside from diamox is there any alternative medications for that, that is already used by allergic persons as preventive medication to als.? Anyway, I'll be trying diamox weeks before my scheduled ascent to predetermine if I am still allergic to it since the diagnosis was around almost 10years ago. I wouldn't also be able to contact my doctor because I am away from him, literally ocean's away from him.

    • @swathichatrapathy1058
      @swathichatrapathy1058 5 лет назад

      Hi Mark, it's a good plan to test the medicine out before taking it. Go ahead and do that. There's really no alternative for Diamox that is as effective. I would suggest carrying it with you anyway -- if it actually comes to you having AMS and an emergency case, it's better to take it and deal with the allergy consequences (if it's a mild allergy).
      This also depends on which trek you're going on. If you have enough time to acclimatise, you don't need to worry too much!

      Hi Akshay, a preventive course of Diamox will not really be necessary on the Kheerganga trek. Just take the medicine with you and you can take it if you feel any symptoms. If you do feel symptoms, take one tablet every 6-12 hours. But if you do feel symptoms, you should descend to lower altitude, which will be possible within a few hours on this trek.

      Hi Deepali, travelling be vehicle and gaining altitude can cause AMS much more than trekking. This is because you gain altitude very quickly without acclimatising.

      Hi Shruti, you should take Diamox from one day before the trek. It takes some time for the effect to kick in. So starting it the day before you travel to the base camp is the best.

    Instead of proper acclimatising through altering food and water habits Diamox inhibits acclimatization by lowering blood salt levels leading to shock. It is a choice for couch potatoes who have no idea of what they are doing and no mountaineer will ever recommend Diamox. Diamox is used only sparingly and as a last resort on the subject.

      Ab tak aisa koi medicine nahi hai, jo diamox ko replace kar sakta hai. Lekin bohot saare medical stores mein Diamoox mil jaayega.

      Hi Swati, I am planning for Langtang trek in Nepal this October, which ascend for about 4000m plus in 3/4 days trek from basecamp. I am also planning to take my child who is just 10 years kid, we have been preparing for this since last month. But, worried if I should take my child with me or not, I fear AMS. Should we take Dimox for child as preventive ? Pls, suggest.

    Hi Swathi, should I take Diamox preventive course for my Brahmatal trek? It's my first himalayan trek. Pls. suggest.

      Diamox is not really necessary for the Brahmatal trek, it climbs slowly. Do carry it with you though. In case you feel any symptoms, you could take it.
