I've been playing guitar for 24 years, but I never say I know it all...and although I didn't necessarily learn anything new I still genuinely like this man.
I’m 17 and I have no idea what my passion is or what I want to go to college for next year or do for the rest of my life. I’m kind of (scratch that, terrified) of it so I’m really trying to research some of the things that I enjoy and seeing if I could make a career out of it. Musical theatre used to be my first option, but now I’m not so fond of the prospect of having to move to NYC at least. I’m gonna try harder to write presentable music and produce it myself to see if I have enough of a chance, lol. sorry for the minor rambling. had to get it off my chest.
I’m a lifelong keyboard player ...now learning the guitar and you have taught me more about theory (I hate that word) but you’ve taken theory and made it real and practical for me!! So what I’m saying is as I’m learning to play the guitar I’m really becoming a much better keyboard/piano player! Awesome and thanks so much!!
I have never watched a lesson or learned a song from my years of playing that was so informational and straight to the point. You are the first person I really understood, your such a great teacher thank you for this blessing.
You rock my brother! I’ve been playing guitar for 20 years (I’m primarily a drummer) but have never written a song tho I’ve wanted to for YEARS. After watching this video at work a am so excited to get home to my guitar and put this wonderful info to practice. I finally feel confident I can write my first song….thank you
I'm a professional songwriter and this has been a great reminder for coming up with new ideas. Sometimes we forget the basics and want to come up with "new" chords. Thanks for the video. I'll recommend it.
Tricia Bethel Art I’ll help as best I can. You can email me at treminator78@gmail.com. In the subject line please mention that we talked about songwriting on this RUclips video so I’ll know it’s you.
Erich, how timely of a video this one is! I finally have enough confidence and understanding of the guitar and music theory (thanks to you!) to consider the possibilities of writing my own songs. There was a worship song that I wrote back in the '70's and I think that experience stirred my soul to write something more meaningful. Nothing says it like music, and I know you understand and promote your students to learn and advance. I'm so grateful for your instruction and time that you devote to making us all better players.
i’m just very excited because once you started listing stuff out i broke out my notebook to take notes, and i wrote out the major scale with w and h. then you said to do exactly that😌 strange thing 2 be proud of but here i am
the way you talk like a real person makes your videos so helpful and easy to follow. it’s not boring i really feel like i’m learning. literally thank you so much
I've become pretty loyal to this channel. You explain things very well, and I appreciate the way you break things down simplisticly. It helps, as I play more by ear and don't understand much theory. The incredible amount of helpful content you make available for free makes me more interested in going and getting the paid content, and I think I will come pay day. Thank you.
"Fumblina" lol. Thanks for this video. I've been struggling with putting chords to my lyrics for awhile now -- time to get a pen and write out what you were talking about
Hey Erich I've been playing guitar for almost 3 years now. Never took any formal lessons, just learning by watching youtube videos. I gotta say your methods of teaching are outstanding. I love how you want to get the best out of people, getting them to play the instrument even if they don't fully understand the theory behind it. This lesson is right on time as I was lately thinking about the songwriting process. Thank you so much for everything! Cheers from Canada :)
Thanks for this video, great info. This one really hit home! I'm self-taught, play by ear, and learning theory late in life. Your videos on theory and expanding chords have turned on the light for me and helped me to expand my music knowledge and playing. Back to Basics with Theory and understanding added! Have a great Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year from my family to yours.
Hey I have a few queries. FYI: I play guitar, usually I play some famous songs by learning it from RUclips. But I have no knowledge of composing which I love to learn. Queries 1. I wrote a song but How to know which key is likely to suit a song? Can we sing it in any key using the formula you mentioned in video? 2. How to choose the best suitable stumming pattern?
That video actually taught me nothing about songwriting, but told me to go to other videos, which will probably lead to other videos until I eventually need to pay for something. Kind of sad how many people use that scheme nowadays..
Seriously? Taught you nothing? Yes, you did sound very rude, whether you wanted to or not. This was an excellent introduction to how chords are built from the major scale.
A M yes, it was a nice introduction to these chords. It still didn't really teach me something I can actually use for songwriting though. I know people need to make money somehow, but there's so much stuff online that tells you, you can learn something for free, but in the end it's just teasing you, so that you eventually buy something. I think people should be willing to pay for lessons and not expect everything to be free, just because it's online. But then promote your lessons in a way that is fair and lets people know it's just a short introduction/a teaser. Hope you understand, what I mean.
However, I know, I can't expect anyone to really teach me how to write a song, because in the end it's all about my talent and skills. I was just a bit lost, trying to put my ideas for a song into an actual melody/an actual song and was looking for help/inspiration (which this video didn't give me).
Another great video Erich. I like the way you break apart music theory and explain it to where it makes sense. I've only been playing a month when you made the wonderful offer for veterans to have your Unstoppable Guitar System for free and I see myself making improvement.. I've thanked you before but can't help myself to thank you again along with 500 other veterans. Bless you my friend.🙂
I have to admit it soon as you said not very good when talking about atonal music I searched it and it’s perfect, for a Movies horror scene, which I kind of like but I also don’t at the same time.
Music is like food for our ears.we have to treat it with respect.Without music, our lives would have been dull, rhythm less and useless.People need to understand that a sweet tone with rhythm can bring happiness in our lives.and the guitar is one of the most beautiful instruments ever made by man.You can play any note or chord you want.it brings out the musician in you.....
Hi erich! Thank you for this. If you wanna know I have been writing songs since i was in middle school. And now i am in my senior year. Finally through your teaching it encourages me to finally put those songs into the guitar. Wrote few decent ones. Lastly I'm thankful for your vids because it gives me encouragement to go to a music school. Next i will be going to a university. Wish me luck. Hope i get in. I still have a lot to learn but your free 30 lessons was helpful. It shed light to topics i have a hard time with. Thank you. Bow. Hehe
This is great. I must have watched 12 "progression" videos today and walk away scratching my heard. But this video was easy to understand. Thanks Eric!
Great video. Do you have any videos on figuring out the chord progression for a particular melody? For instance, I have written out the notes for a lullaby for my grandaughter. How would I figure out the chord progression for that song? After that, I would really like to create a fingerstyle version of that song. Thanks!
Thank you this was amazing! I maybe a musician but have always struggled and still don't understand theory but you explained this perfectly for me. 🔥🙏🏾🔥
This video helped me so much. I've been playing guitar for almost 12 years; I'm completely self taught and I never understood the concept of I, II, III, IV, etc. until now. You're so right, it was a glass shattering moment, like "HOW (not why) did I not learn this before?" Thank you
I wrote about 5 songs in the past month lol. I don’t know how to play a guitar or even sing good! I need to learn both! So I don’t have chords to my song, just words and a rhythm.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO I'm a stuggling songwriter and this is exactly what I needed to put more stuff together so I'm not entirely relying on my music theory friends for it. Such a great teacher
9:43 There is no way I was right about that!? Ha! Idk why I’m so proud of the fact that that’s what I tell my brothers. Every time I talk about how to write a song I always say stuff like, “Always make a change in chords that will sound kind of off but still right” in other words make a change that people are not used to, and the reason why I say this is because all the hit songs that I’ve heard on the radio usually have a change that I’ve never heard before and that makes me want to come back and listen to it again. I figured that out without knowing anything about theory and that makes me feel proud of myself.
Ha! I have had the very experience you talk of in learning something I never got before. I home schooled my children and when it came to math I had struggled some even though I took higher level math in high school, but when I began teaching math to my children I picked up a lot of little things I missed and all of a sudden math was fun! I could do math, but never enjoyed it, but once all the pieces are there, it is fun! I'm certain it's the same with guitar playing. I'm excited to have found you and will be going through the courses and looking forward to getting all the pieces so I can really have fun playing. Thanks!
Every minor scale has a major counterpart which has the exact same intervals, C -> Am. Thus chords in C work great if you want to improvise in Am, and so on.
So changing keys or using a borrowed key would be like changing the subject but providing some kind of segue. Like if you started talking about cars all of a sudden but you did it by listing some famous musicians' favorite cars, or musicians who were well-known car collectors, something to connect the two subjects if only indirectly. This would have the desired effect of your audience gaining interest in cars instead of losing interest in you. The power of persuasion.
Very well done, laying down some theory without getting too far into the weeds. Great advice regarding learning theory as well, as it will save a ton of time wandering around the fretboard aimlessly. I've been playing for 30 years and was surfing for a little songwriting inspiration, feeling a little stale and stuck in the box. It's good to get another musician's perspective at times when the fretboard seems to be only five frets long. Great video and thanks for the help. Best from the Bay Area. MK
