What about the question?: What does he look like? What about the question?: What does he look like? And if you want to know about his physical appearance, if he’s tall or short, fat or skinny, with a head full of dense, luxurious blond hair or bald as a billiard ball, you ask: “What does he look like?”
Great question! When a person asks "What does he look like?", he wants information about physical appearance - tall/short, skinny/fat, hair color, etc. But when a person asks "What's he like?", he wants information about personality, temperament, etc. - kind, patient, funny, lazy, hard-working, clever, etc. Hope this helps!
yeah. Thank you for your explananation. I also think so but I am a bit confused because i watched some videos on RUclips and they said "What's he like" describes the whole person, inside and out. "What does he look like" describes his outside appearance.
Yes, "What does he look like?" focuses on outward appearance. "What's he like?" could include physical descriptions, but it is more commonly used for personality, etc. ;)
What is the difference between " what is he like?" and " how is he"? ? What is the difference between "what is Italy like?" and " how is Italy?"? What is the difference between " what is dinner like?" and " how is dinner?''? Thank you.
"What is he like?" focuses on the general characteristics of an individual. But "How is he?" would be used if (for example) you had heard that so-and-so was sick, and you wanted to know if he was feeling better. So in other words, "How is X?" focuses on a specific situation, not a general description. Hope this helps! :)
So what on earth is the difference between"What's he like?" and "What does he look like?". As what's~like can also be used for describing both a person's character and his appearance here. Does the second one emphasizes appearance more? Thank you for your explanation:)
I still don't understand when does exactly we use "does" and "is". Just like my question here... should I use when does exactly... or when is exactly... Or in other sentences like: Is it hurt ? OR does it hurt? What is the main difference between them? OR what does the main diference between them? An so on... So.. how can I use "does" and "is" correctly? Thank you
Here is one way to think about it that might be helpful ;) Use "is" when you are talking about a characteristic or a state of being: Is the cat hurt?...in other words, Has someone/something injured the cat? This is what we call "passive," because the cat (subject) is the receiver of the actions of another. The cat didn't DO anything. Use "does" when you are talking about an action verb - the subject acts according to a particular verb: Did the cat hurt the bird? This is what we call "active," because the cat (subject) performed the action (hurt) on the bird (object). With your particular example (Is it hurt? vs. Does it hurt?): If you are talking to another person, you would use "Is it hurt?" if you are asking about a third thing (animal, non-living object) being injured. If you are speaking directly to another person to see how they feel, you would ask "Does it (your arm, your stomach, etc.) hurt?" Thanks for asking :) Hope this helps!
Hi! To answer "What's he like?" you can talk about just the appearance, or just the personality, or both. It depends on what kind of information the asker is looking for. Perhaps I'm trying to meet someone I've never met before, and I need to be able to recognize him when I see him - then, appearance would be important to me. But if I were registering for a class, I would care more about the teacher's personality - hard grader, knowledgeable, good teacher, poor teacher, etc - so I would like more information about personality, and I wouldn't care about the teacher's appearance. Hope this helps!
Very clear explanation. Very good!
