This is a great video for new families looking for a family car. My wife and I are in the exact same boat! This answers a lot of questions we’ve had, and now we will be test driving one soon. Cheers from Southern California!
@RyanCowan you kind of eluded to it bur do you think a 2024 Model Y would have significantly better suspension? I am tossing up between getting a hoepfully cheaper 2024 Y at the end of this year. Of a new 2025 Juniper Y early next. But the suspension is a deal breaker for me so if the 2024 isn't better than the 22
My wife and I just bought our first Tesla MYP. The ride is really smooth compared to my ram rebel and Hyundai Veloster. I couldn’t be happier with the car! 🎉🙏🏽
In terms of practicality bro, yup definitely the Model Y. Had mine for 4 months and can honestly say I fall in love every time I step inside. We will be planning a family soon so this was definitely the best choice!
Agree with all of the above! love our car - we’re in the same phase of life. Not sure where the best place to submit feedback is for this stuff but… Some features I’d like added Serene route planner - drive around for a specified amount of time before coming home (eg when baby needs to sleep) - best route that has least amount stop/starts Customised Joe modes - modify a set of features (eg, baby crying mode - baby music playing in rear, baby asleep mode - no interior lights, all music at front) 3. If adaptive or air suspension in new models, rock a by-mode. Rock when not moving. 4. Specify which interior lights come on/off so it doesn’t shine in baby’s face. 5. Noise cancelling to counter noise of doors shutting 6. Rear facing camera built into c pillar or headrest of back seat. Let me know if there’s a good way to submit this kind of stuff.
I’m at ground zero in Silicon Valley. Picked my model y up directly at Fremont factory where it was built 3 months ago. Used autopilot from Day 1 and use autopilot 99% of the time. It’s phenomenal.
Great overview Ryan! For the door issue, you can gently close the door 99% of the way and then give it a little push and it'll close the door fine. I've done it a thousand times to avoid waking up my kids during their car naps.
The Model Y is an amazing family car. We loved ours but switched to Cybertruck and have loved that even more. All the great utility of the model Y plus the utility of a truck and other tech advancements from Tesla. I did a video awhile back on this very topic for the Cybertruck titled “Why the Cybertruck is the Perfect Family Vehicle”. I always recommend a Model Y or Cybertruck to any family! 🙂 Edit: here’s the vid: ruclips.net/video/UrR6kFsNQF4/видео.htmlsi=0EJTV9KYT3FEnrfA
no idea when the Cybertruck is coming to Australia, not for the foreseeable future I’ve heard😔. Still the Y does everything we could ever want from a car and more. How do you find parking your truck being so wide? Just curious.
@@lawrencecoleman6998 the Y is awesome. Oh yeah parking it is no problem at all thanks to the Cybertruck’s combination of steer-by-wire which dynamically controls required input for steering (steer more with less movement) and 4 wheel steering.
We bought our rwd Mod Y pretty much when you did. Agree that the suspension could be more supple especially on less than perfect bitumen roads, plenty of those on the Sunny Coast. When our son started Uni in Gatton we packed ALL his dorm things into the Y. We had bets whether it could take it all… I won😊. So many compartments it’s not funny. The best thing imo about the Y is it’s just such an easy car to drive, zipping about Brisbane is a breeze thanks to instant torque. I for one will never ever go back to a petrol car again. I’ve seen the light😇
I have a 2024 model Y. The suspension is rock hard compared with my old Lexus NX 300 h. I suspect nothing has changed as it still needs to support a heavy battery and the tire pressure is huge..
Almost 2 years of ownership for me and 50,000km in Perth, WA - saved approx $25k from the previous car I had in fuel, servicing, repairs if I had kept it - the Y really did need more supple suspension, wiper system needs improvement and the ghost/late auto braking can be dangerous in Auto-steer if you are unaware of the issue and have your foot at the accelerator ready to counter it. I wish you could turn down or off the white line detection alert and turn down/off the external speaker for reversing (was going to have it retrofitted but decided against it). The rim design on the Inductions and Ubers could do with a redesign so they are not so prone to curb rash. Factory tires only lasted 40k, so the car is now in Chill mode with new IONS EV by Handkok which are also run flats. I would only consider a upgrade Y if they includes V2H, so my house can run off the car when home. Aside from that, I smile ear to ear still every time I get into this car!
1.5 years ownership, 30,000kms here, also with a family. I agree with most points, apart from autopilot. I don't use this feature, it's downright dangerous, almost had a number of rear enders on the highway due to phantom braking. You can add a spare wheel under the floor in the boot, that's what I've done. Storage is OK, we have large 4wds previously and live on acreage and still use the 4wd for trips and hauling stuff.
Thanks for this comprehensive review! Couldn't agree more about the suspension being the biggest cons of Model Y, especially for families with young kids.
Had an M3P, test drove a MYRWD for 2 days. For a family car... MYRWD was the one we would rather drive of the two. Sold the M3P and done 7500km in 4 months of having the MYRWD. ❤🎉
Probably just echoing everyone else here, but I've had my '24 Model Y LR for over 7 months now and LOVE it! I have a toddler and I can't imagine going back to any other car, especially for trips. The storage capacity alone was incredibly nice for baby stuff. Side note: I do video production on the side and I'm a drummer, and the cargo space has been AMAZING for this. I almost bought the Model 3 but after comparing them, there's no way I could've made that work. The Y is much bigger in person than I realized but I find it to be perfect. Regarding suspension, I'm coming from a lowered Focus ST, so it's night & day. lol However, I find myself wishing for slightly better/softer suspension.
If you’re looking for rear passenger shades, I would highly recommend the new Snap Shades for the Y. We recently installed them and they work pretty well. Also, ceramic tinting can help with any heat rejection.
Such a good video for future and present parents looking for a new car! We are a family with 1,5 year old baby and I have a Tesla Model Y RWD and I couldn't agree more with the video. The space is great, you can pack a lot of stuff and travel with a baby and it's easy for the parents as well, because there is a ton of leg room to stretch and get comfortable. The only downside I would add is that in the autopilot, sometimes there is ghost braking, which could wake the baby up. Keep up the good work! 👏🏻🥳
I took my family on a 9 hr road trip and I couldnt believe how much we could fit into the model y and we were comfortable... extremely impressed and very happy with out purchase. our family is growing now and we are looking at adding a model X
I have the feb 2023 version 7 seater and what I can say is the ride is very rough, much rougher than my sienna, the 2nd row is narrow and so you will have VERY limited option if you have to fit 3 car seats/boosters. Other than that, its been a very economy vehicle, we save about $100 each month on gas by charging at home 100% of the time
Thank you so much for this video Ryan, you're seriously selling cars to people, it's amazing! It's super annoying that people dont understand when I tell the petrol head that it takes me 30 seconds to charge!!
I travelled in the back of my 2022 model y down the highway, and man it was a bumpy ride! It's not as bad being a passenger in the front but I definitely wouldn't want to do a long drive in the back.
Great video Ryan. We need more people like you spreading the word. I love every time I get into my M3LR. BTW I installed an auto frunk closing system two years ago from EVoffer. It was a game changer. Customer service was exceptional. Install was actually fun. Took a while but loved seeing what was under the hood (pardon the pun). Keep up the good work. 👍
but the insurance cost is way more expensive than an ICE car. I have a 2023 Y and I have paid 3.1k for a comprehensive with NRMA for the first year. Usually the premium would decresease over years, but I got billed 3.2k for the second year which is weird. I have quoted with a few other insurance companies and they even quoted me a higher premium than NRMA did. I have to say the world is not going friendly enough to EV owners which makes it hard to own a EV these days.
I have a 3 month old and me and my wife want to upgrade one of our cars to a model Y or a minivan when we have another kid. Still don't know which one we'll end up with but now I'm leaning towards the Model Y.
Try the Skoda Enyaq! Trust me, you will never go back... It turns the negative aspects of the model y into positive aspects, such as the ultra soft suspension, the soft closing of the doors and many other things designed to be the best electric car for families.
Hi, I came across your channel. I also have a Tesla model 3 2021. I went through your video quickly. The suspension will be solved by Australian KONI SPACIAL ACTIVE shock absorbers. I assume you've heard of them before. Try replacing it and you'll probably have similar comfort as the Highland. Have a good time. George from the Czech Republic.
I agree that it's the 2nd best car on the road (behind the Model 3 of course 😉) but I have to disagree with the reputation of the white seats. Yes, they look awesome, but mine got permanently stained from blue jeans after only 20k km. They're not ruined, you have to look closely to see it and I'll live with it, but keep it in mind when considering the car - contrary to what many are saying, you can get blue stains on the seats from your trousers.
We have a Honda odyssey would consider the Y but we have two kids and are planning to have a third so I don’t think it would work. The odyssey is hard to beat with space and comfort while driving. Would be nice if Tesla came out with a nice van one day.
As much I like Tesla I hate it the same way 😂 Model Y is rally terrific in terms of practicality, performance and sound insulation but at the same time it’s too different from ICE car interior. That’s why VW ID4 more favorable for us with wife. Only one downside of VW - space is not comparable to Model Y
My one gripe with my Model 3 so far is its often too eager to lock itself with the walk away door lock. For example, phone in pocket, unloading two kids. By the time I have one kid out with the doors closed, it'll sometimes lock by the time I walk around to the other side. It could be due to my phone's patchy Bluetooth, but it is often a bit stressful when you have to trigger the unlock again to get the other kid out.
Great video, looking at getting a model Y, as we are beginning our own family. As someone who lives in a major city in Australia and would not have be in a position for home charging, how much of a hindrance do you think it would be to rely on the charging network near us rather than home charging? Everything in your video sounded so positive for our situation apart from the home charging availability
I have a 23 MY. Not sure if I have the "comfort" suspension or not, nor do I know how to check if I do. But I can tell you that the suspension is still stiff and I can feel all the bumps on the road. Maybe I got used to it, but when we first got it I thought to myself that this is the worst suspension ever.
Yes, have seriously considered Unplugged Performance $4k kit .. I suspect we might go down that path if we don't upgrade our Model Y to a new version in the future-which financially would be a hard move to justify.
Just a heads up, OEM springs are already optimised for the best balance between comfort and handling. Changing to a softer spring will result in worse handling, but better comfort. Is it a worthwhile tradeoff, that’s up to you.
@Ben21756 True for most springs. Thing is Eibach springs are progressive. One third of the spring is softer than OEM which absorbs bumps on the road and gives more comfort. Two thirds of the spring is harder actually than OEM and during hard cornering offers more stability. So you improve both scenarios with them, chill and sporty driving.
I don’t think people don’t hate the fact there is short of chargers and having to wait to charge, but people just need a negative reason not to own an ev, and low charging places just give them to say
The one thing that annoys me is the lights you can't turn off. Unless there is a way every time you open a door the light turns on in the rear and can wake our kid. I have to jump over and turn it off.
Hi Ryan, thats a fantastic review. The video has a lot of information. I have ordered my Tesla now, thank you. I am just envious with that sunshade on the roof that you have. Can you please share the link, i.e. where you have ordered it from please. Thanks - Sachin
Whenever someone said negative things about electric cars, I'd said, buy a Model Y then, cause it's the most car sold in the world last year, beating 18 years record of Toyota. Then I watch them Googling on the spot to try to prove me wrong. 😂 To top it off, I said there is a reason why you are using a smart phone; not a Nokia/Blackberry/Sony-Erickson phone. It's the same reason why I drive a Model Y now and not an ICE car.
I'm jealous on everyone boasting how great autopilot is. Here in Belgium it's shit. Serious shit. The adaptive cruise control in other brands is even better. Hoping to see a good update for EU roads soon. We have tiny roads with a lot of movement and curves, odd parking spots. The Tesla just shits his pants.
Our y is now out of warranty. So 2 gripes spare yea just signed up for nrma. And my fridge Tesla killed the 12v socket in the rear. Grrr. But with our 2 month old plenty of space.
A recent update changed how the rear 12v socket works. Apparently it will now only work if you have camp mode on (still works fine while you are driving though).
Yuck to soft suspension. you need to upgrade to a seven seat model Y so much better for kids and when your without them you just fold up the backseats and your car seats disappear
I don't know but for me Tesla Model Y is too loud inside, not suitable for long distance driving, I have to put earplugs in, it's not a pleasant noise. And it shakes terribly
you must have got some manufacturing fault. Did you know you could point that out and get it fix straight up? some people had squeeky noise in their seats and got it replaced.
Undoubtedly a good family car, space and performance and low consumption. But for me, I sold my Tesla Model Y. The reason is simple, putting money in Elon Musk's pocket is completely out of the question. The man is crazy and far too controversial. Yes, my choice has political views. I cannot support a man who chooses to openly support dictators.
Love my model Y but it definitely puts a stink on the brand. I respected him as an engineer and knowing exactly what goes into his rockets and building what Tesla has become, but he’s surely souring a lot of people of the brand.
one way to prioritise ride comfort is to switch/downsize the wheels and tires combo to 255/55r18. lots of mods can also be done to facilitate features like soft door closing, auto frunk, auto sunshade....just to name a few.

Don’t even get me started on this car being so quiet, I can’t even stand a gust of air on windshield now.
The one thing that annoys me is the lights you can't turn off. Unless there is a way every time you open a door the light turns on in the rear and can wake our kid. I have to jump over and turn it off.
I've seen that you can get a 3rd party soft close system for the doors. Might be worth looking into ?
Hi mate, parent of 3 here... Wonder if you will consider a video with 3 baby seats in the back.
I wanna watch u doing a review about Model X.
Hi Ryan, thats a fantastic review. The video has a lot of information. I have ordered my Tesla now, thank you. I am just envious with that sunshade on the roof that you have. Can you please share the link, i.e. where you have ordered it from please. Thanks - Sachin
Thanks ! I got it from Otrifowd, but I dont think they're making that one anymore 🤔
Whenever someone said negative things about electric cars, I'd said, buy a Model Y then, cause it's the most car sold in the world last year, beating 18 years record of Toyota. Then I watch them Googling on the spot to try to prove me wrong. 😂
To top it off, I said there is a reason why you are using a smart phone; not a Nokia/Blackberry/Sony-Erickson phone. It's the same reason why I drive a Model Y now and not an ICE car.
💯
Ma dove sei ? In Australia? Vedo guida a sinistra? Grazie
Nice review!
The glass roof ruined everything for our family here in AZ. The Model Y isn’t even an option because of the scorching sun.
They make shades…
fantastic and well done 👍🙏💪
great video

I'm jealous on everyone boasting how great autopilot is. Here in Belgium it's shit. Serious shit. The adaptive cruise control in other brands is even better. Hoping to see a good update for EU roads soon. We have tiny roads with a lot of movement and curves, odd parking spots. The Tesla just shits his pants.
Hey Ryan where is cooper.Has he been replaced.
Our y is now out of warranty. So 2 gripes spare yea just signed up for nrma. And my fridge Tesla killed the 12v socket in the rear. Grrr. But with our 2 month old plenty of space.
A recent update changed how the rear 12v socket works.
Apparently it will now only work if you have camp mode on (still works fine while you are driving though).
how is the space with 2 car seats in the back? can a passenger sit comfortably? i have 2 of the diono slim car seats
Fine with 2 car seats in the back. @techiedani has some videos showing this !
Love this
Civic corolla camry crv rav 4 prius accord hybrids plug-ins.
Blazer prolougeev
Yuck to soft suspension. you need to upgrade to a seven seat model Y so much better for kids and when your without them you just fold up the backseats and your car seats disappear
Not sold in Australia
verry good
Space yes it a family car but not on ride comfort. It too hard and harsh on bumps.
Also willow is so cute
🥰
I don't know but for me Tesla Model Y is too loud inside, not suitable for long distance driving, I have to put earplugs in, it's not a pleasant noise. And it shakes terribly
you must have got some manufacturing fault. Did you know you could point that out and get it fix straight up? some people had squeeky noise in their seats and got it replaced.
Better than that is the Kia ev9 … but Kia is more expensive . At least in my country .
Loud car doors? Ummm
Noticeably louder than our previous Model 3, and much heavier
I drive a Jeep Wagoneer and it’s a way better car for a family.
2:31 !
You have to take your baby out of the car at petrol stations? Are babies a fire hazard?
Does it start on fire when you drive through a puddle?
Does it take longer to stop (due to being heavy) in snow or ice?
Good caaaa 😂
let me know when you get two babies….
❤❤
Its a good car, too bad Elon Musk has gone cocoo though..
Why dose that matter do you care about the ceo you buy your lawnmower from or the one you buy your blender

Piece of junk lol. My wagoneer is way more spacious and gives a way better range.
Luxury problems
Your video thumbnail is boring 💩
Undoubtedly a good family car, space and performance and low consumption. But for me, I sold my Tesla Model Y. The reason is simple, putting money in Elon Musk's pocket is completely out of the question. The man is crazy and far too controversial. Yes, my choice has political views. I cannot support a man who chooses to openly support dictators.
I mean he already had your money. I'm keeping mine despite loathing what Musk has turned into.
Yah he supports Trump too and for that reason I won't support Tesla. Camry Hybrid ftw
Tesla is overall a horrible company
Love my model Y but it definitely puts a stink on the brand. I respected him as an engineer and knowing exactly what goes into his rockets and building what Tesla has become, but he’s surely souring a lot of people of the brand.
one way to prioritise ride comfort is to switch/downsize the wheels and tires combo to 255/55r18. lots of mods can also be done to facilitate features like soft door closing, auto frunk, auto sunshade....just to name a few.
