Respect to all the UG miners... my father worked UG copper mine (tunnel rats) for 35+ years, he retired now...My younger brother and cousins are now working at the mine...
I was proud of the men I worked with when I was shaft mining doing this exact work. I also worked in Thompson and Leaf Rapids. You had each others backs. Hard , dirty ,dangerous work but I loved it.
I was a shaft fitter at the Whitemoor mine in Yorkshire UK and this video reminded me of the barbaric work conditions we endured at 1 kilometre deep drill blast muck out wire the walls and concrete every 60 metres. It paid me well though
Fantastic work chaps missed my opportunity all the pits was shut in the uk 🇬🇧 however we just got plans for a new deep coal mine so can’t wait 😜 stay safe lads
Definitely in the top nastiest jobs ever, 11 hours to drill and load so the blast can occur before the cross shift comes down. Zero comfort, cold wet nasty and hard.
Actually we took two six foot benches a shift. So we drilled and blasted twice and mucked out twice per shift….each drill and blast cycle took about two hours, and it would take about two hours to muck out each time. We worked 8 hour shifts. We got two benches a shift.
i had just finished training a new hoistman and when he was competent i went down and did some filming...then i went back on the hoist and stayed for the rest of the shaft.
Thanks for sharing Blake, I work at t3 mine in Thompson so very interesting to see. Which vent shaft is this in particular? You said it goes down to 2400 level, is it the fresh air 310 shaft?
great video and part 2 kicks ass as well. What did you do job wise to be able to get all this great footage? This is the real deal for sure. Love to see more, keep em coming!
I was the hoistman, I had just finished training a new operator so when he was competent and it was his last shift with me before going on his own I took the opportunity to go down and film my crew.
Sitting on the pnuematic boring machine would cause serious internal health problems after a year or so. The noise from those machines was also horrific leading to tinnitus and deafness. All in all, the money was outstanding but the cost was higher with poor health as one got older.
I'm in school to learn mining , one of our teacher talked to us about a guy that was working on sinking a shaft he was sitting on his plugger, the iron broke and he fell right on he, got implaled. He survived though, but now he has a pouch on his side since the back hole don't work anymore.
Yes drill steel will break and it’s led to some horrible accidents. I was at a mine in northern Ontario working as a cage tender. One night the drift crew leader called me and said a guy on his crew was bleeding pretty bad, so I jumped on the cage and went to pick them up. The fella that was hurt was holding the end of an 8 foot steel to help his partner caller a hole with his jack leg drill. The steel broke off about 2 feet from the chuck and it drove into the guys head who was helping him. His head had a nasty hole in it and he was bleeding bad, we held him upright in the cage all the way to surface. Took him out in an ambulance. He had lost six pints of blood by the time he got to the hospital. He pulled through ok, took a week off and came back to work.
Ha ha…yup we spent it all in the bar chasng woman, fighting and such…the bus to work used to stop at the police station on a regular basis to pick us up.
Air Hammer-Drills impart a lot of vibration to the body ; BUT if you really want HARD Drilling , try doing it ''Single Jack'' where you hold the drill steel in one hand and strike it with a 4 pound Sledge in the other . I've sunk a couple of Shafts and cut many a Drift that way . Now THAT'S hard work ! -- < Doc , Miner for 50 years > .
LOL...some serious vibration toys you men are having...maybe i should change my job and come and work with you. Are you mining or making some tunnel or what are you actually doing? ...other than enjoying the vibration of course :P . Thanks for dropping by on my channel, subbed back :)

Old school hard work way of mining a shaft.
Hope these boys are all still healthy and well 👍
Much better and safer ways to do it now, thankfully.

@zinger52 THE "PLUGGERS" are a beast to handle at 75 pounds a piece...but when your on bonus you do what it takes to drill off as fast as possible.
@77dangler ...Thats a good one,I enjoyed working with Winston, hope all is well With your dad and Family.

Yes it was called the 1D vent shaft when we sank it with McIntyre
Poured the plug in the 24’ shaft for Harrison Western in Grants New Mexico back in the late 70’s.
I sank a few shafts with Harrison in ontario Canada.

I’m so excited
Moneys not that good😩
@@martycash2649 Back in 1980 the money was at least 3 times what a National Coal Board on the coal face got. That was good money by any metric.

Jordar
... when the Client chooses the cheaper tender...
sank shafts at wistow and riccal ...was know has bob then....was union man at wistow for a while
Is this for an elevator or a vent shaft? How deep will it be?
It was a vent shaft…we bottomed out at 2400 feet
Let me guess...half the time they worked and half the time they were drunk. I think I know some people involved in this shaft deepening.
Ha ha…yup we spent it all in the bar chasng woman, fighting and such…the bus to work used to stop at the police station on a regular basis to pick us up.
that was a good 1
Yer all gettin the days off for not wearing yer glasses lol
Is that Al Michaud?
Yes it is…he was pissed off after he slammed his clam…lol
How deep it will be...?
Just 2400 feet
handheld drilling is so hard
