Cutting in Vegas is a Dream... All stems have faders and you can go to crop - fx - etc parameters right from them.... Using it for over 20+ years. Right now trying to learn Premier Pro and it's hell! No faders on video or audio stems... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHKKKKKK 😢 The fact that Vegas works like a DAW is what I love about it since I use DAWs since 1994
I've used Vegas on and off for years, i tried Resolve for a little bit and i do not find the interface anywhere near as easy and straightforward as Vegas, literally the only thing that's annoyed me with Vegas is the stability problems that others have complained about that pop up now and again. Too bad there's no Vegas style layout for Resolve. Guess I'll be sticking with Vegas though.

Same feelings here. I really wanted to like resolve so that I could get away from all of the Sony Vegas crashes but I just couldn't get comfortable with some of the workflow components in resolve. Have returned to Vegas and am just OCD about saving my work.
Vegas is great for musicians - for people who already work in a DAW, because the workflow and logic of how the program is organized is very similar. I work in Cubase and I learned Vegas very quickly.
You don't have to use the trimmer at all (Unless that's what you did on another program (e.g. Final cut, premier). Vegas has a better method where you to do everything on the time line itself.. without that middle Trimmer step. So really, Vegas is better than any other in making it work the fastest way that you feel comfortable with. I do all the edit on the time line, cut, strech, trim, overlap just by pulling one over the other, or even make it Fade Automatically as you drag each clip onto the time line. It easier to do than write about it :-) ... Just learn by watching 10 second clips on RUclips about anything Vegas.
Agree. I've tried to like the "Trimmer' - thought it must have SOME reason for its existence. But working on the timeline always wins the day - just a lot more intuitive and easy.
yes was looking for a comment like this. I'm trying to learn davinci because of how many issues Vegas has but the workflow on Vegas is unmatched. All you have to do is drag all of your video into the timeline and cut and make all your edits there. there's no need to import or trim or set in and out points. I think that's my main issue with all other editing software. it's overly complicated and not as simple as Vegas.
I'm glad to see you mentioned the layout and preferences can be modified to work with your workflow of using the trimmer. That's why the preferences are there - so you can set it up for your workflow and I can set it up for mine. Personally, I never use the trimmer. I just drop all the clips I want on the timeline and then trim the events from there. Whatever works best is the way the preferences should be set. And, honestly, I turn off the "Open last project" setting as one of the first settings I change! Those default audio effects have been there as far back as I can remember (and I started on Vegas Video 2 shortly before Vegas Video 3 came out). Those effects are definitely functional but are not the most current of effects available. Fortunately, once again, you can change the defaults as desired but I've found that even these older default ones do most of what I need done anyway. Then I add in newer ones for any desired fine-tuning. VEGAS Post (with VEGAS Effects and VEGAS Image) can also be purchased non-subscription. Edit, Pro, and Post are all available as Subscription OR Perpetual. Just change the option from "Annual Subscription" using the drop down arrow on the web page you presented and choose "New License" instead if you want it to never expire. But you will lose the ability to update after a length of time (so far, when the next version number has been released) and won't have access to the "subscription only" features. Now the Hub downloads and text to speech/speech to text definitely do require the subscription version.
The space bar can be used eaither as a PAUSE button, or a STOP button (been there since version 1 some 25 years ago. It's a simple selection box you tick (or un-tick) in prefrences.
What made Vegas so infamous was the performance, starting with vegas 11 there were introduced many improvements, but also glitches that totally overshadowed them. GPU accelerated render was so borked that if it (ever) worked it would decrease rendering time, only to crash mid-render and wasting the time saved, so CPU-only rendering was the best bet. Sliding the preview back and forth locked the program and the audio track settings were ocasionally ignored, Sony Creative Software pretty much neglected Vegas. The first release under the Magix brand was LIGHT YEARS from the previous Sony one (i could use intel QuickSync on a cpu as old as a 3rd gen core i7) and the RAM usage was almost half, ive seen vegas 12 crash the entire OS on 24 GB of RAM, Resolve never was my cup of tea, and after countless tutorials it still doesn't please me
My Vegas Pro 15 seems to lock up often....it has taught me to back up often. I always thought it was that my videos were so bad that the program could not stand working on my lame videos.
3:35 there is actually an option where you can change it that the clip opens in the trimmer tab instead send to the timeline. Hope it helps also good Video :)

Last one I used was Vegas 17 and have kept using it up until now, so it's good to know they're not making things worse haha! I remember 14 years ago, I started video editing on Vegas 6.5. I was a vegas user until version 11 then finally came to Davinci Resolve. That time I remember Acid pro, Acid Music Studio and sound forge. by the way, what's happen to Sony catalyst Edit?
You know there is option Davinci Resolve to open the last project automatically. The problem if project crash, like try to upscale 4x and apply heavy effect ends up in a crash loop .
You know what I hate about Vegas the most? When you Render, click the Customize Template button, and at the bottom, click the Project tab. There is a setting of Video quality to render out as, and by default it's set to "Project Settings". Well my Project Settings has always been Preview on my Preview monitor because i was workin on an old chuggy FX8350. So for 5 years I've been rendering out my final videos in Preview mode and had no clue because I'm blind, it all looks the same to me. Brilliant, Vegas, just brilliant. Anyway, change this drop down menu to "Best". And save the Template. The second thing I hate the most is it crashes a lot.

I 1st bought Sony Vegas back in 2006, after using a hacked version of acid pro. I believe that was their audio recorder. Surprisingly all of those same filters and effects are in Sony Vegas. You can produce a song as well as a movie. I've just upgraded to the new version, but I've been using version 8 for over a decade.

U need alot of ram and work with proxys then it works well.. i currently cut a showreel and i use vegas since 2005. aces is soo good exr support also.. i dont know what is better on premiere tbh

Most of the time I use trimmer for B-rolls, for what, IMHO, it is supposed to be used mostly. When you have crowded timeline and want to insert B-roll in some free spot and don’t need to take it somewhere miles away in the timeline, cut it out and insert where you want it. That’s where trimmer functionality really shines. And mouse scrubbing for in and out points is very intuitive. Love Vegas, other NLE’s don’t have many great functionality, which I think is crucial.
VEGAS need to give us more text effects, subtitles and lower thirds pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
I started off on an old version of Vegas Pro and switched over to Premiere Pro and I found both very similar - both straight forward, intuitive and easy to use - keen to try latest Vegas

I just gonna say something and dont hate me but after 6 years of editing using after effects, premiere, davinci resolve and vegas, in vegas it is too easy to cut/sync clips, other than that you gotta need to export to premiere/davinci or even after effects to add any asset and sfx
In fact, I was using Vegas Pro for 15 years before switching to DaVinci Resolve a year ago. It was a pleasure using Vegas for editing on a Mac Bootcamp setup. However, after the Mac M1 was announced, Mactel on Bootcamp was no longer available. Vegas Pro ran flawlessly on that setup, just like DaVinci does on the M1 chip. However, I jumped right into DaVinci workflow and stop at Vegas Pro 19's... DaVinci workflow is super flawless and renders extremely fast. When you work with Vegas Pro, you have to mess around with all those windows and panels, whereas when you use DaVinci, you can work on your action on 6 pages to design what you're working on. The industry standard will be DaVinci in about 5 years. It's a powerful editing, color, audio, and 3D compositing program. All in one... their only problem is developing Fusion animation so there are fewer nodes and steps involved in creating animation. When I dive down and look at steps for creating some of text and graphic animation, there are a lot of steps for simple animation. Fusion code is probably about 20 years old. A free CD version was available 10 years ago. In DaVInci, things were taken from Vegas Pro, Autodesk Combustion, and Smoke and improved. As far as what I used them for, there are similarities between all three.
Nice round up. Unfortunately (for me) as soon as Magix bought out Sony Vegas movie studio they ruined it in my opinion. It's hard to put a finger on but it just doesn't work as smooth and easy as it used too. I bought Vegas 16 and I was done after that. I still use Sony movie studio platinum 12 to this day.
@@frostgodx @seaskimmer I had hoped that the Sony acquisition would have made Vegas more of an industry standard, but that never happened. The Magix acquisition unnerved me at first, but they don't seem to have trashed it. There does seem to be continuity in terms of the development team and I think there are still ex-Sonic Foundry guys there. Despite any reservations, I have continued to use Vegas for over twenty years as my exclusive NLE. It's just so intuitive and I think I'm too dyed in the wool to change. I'm sure I would be saying the same thing if I had used Resolve or Premiere from day one. In terms of workflow and functionality, I think Vegas is outstanding. In terms of stability, it's still a dog. I wish they would make a release that focussed just on improving stability with no feature additions. I mean, what more can they add?!
Resolve is pretty good, takes a bit of a learning curve but its a good free video editor without a doubt. Vegas is alot easier to learn though for some reason, but its a bit buggier and more unstable, crashing is more frequent but thats been the norm with it over the years. They both have their ups and downs
Everything crashes at one time or another for various reasons. Every. Best to download the trial version (limited length you can render) and hammer it hard for 30 days.
I used Adobe Photoshop for years for personal use. Bought regular updates. When Adobe moved to subscription based only, I abandoned Lightroom. Subscription based software is a no-go for me.
For some reason SOny Movie Studio 16 does not do a very good job at all load balancing rendering across Ryzen's 32 threads. It's kind of abysmal how littl ei takes advantage of all this processing power on my 7950x. It's 10x faster for sure than on my FX8350... but for the moneyI put into this and the horsepower it has, it should be 30x because it's leaving a lot of horsepower on the table.
Faster for talking heads where everything is on one clip, but not for vlogs or short films where you have multiple clips with dialog. At least not in my experience. Really hard to keep things organized when you do that.
@@JayLippman ive make movies for 14 yrs. Using trimmer is way to slow my work. Put everything on time line. Bind on "S" split and "D" delete and you throw out everyting you dont need without looking on trimmer window/media project window . Its simply and faster. Ive been editing on da vinci and in my opinion worst thing in vinci is that you cant click wherever you want on timeline or track to set up cut point (like in vegas). In vinci you must click on time bar what is so annoying. Ive tested all programs like premiere vinci vegas edius and think vegas is best for editing, and vinci is best for coloring. Try to edit on vegas and you will love how fast and intuitive it is and you dont need to know all table of shortcuts like in vinci :)
In Resolve under Preferences - UI Settings you can check for Resolve to open last project on start-up. Then you showed the Explorer tab - to which in Resolve is the same on the media page ( at the top ) and not sure how it could get any quicker than dragging in the media and Resolve saving the path to the media (takes literally milliseconds). I know you were just showing what it can do, but the inference was that Resolve was somehow not able to do these things. But in a world, where Davinci Resolve has a fully functional free version, it becomes extremely hard to compete with it. The only thing I can see is, if is a company like Vegas was able to perform on an older computer with way less resources, there are a lot of people that might be interested. And if that was the case, they should market it in that way. Like I said - you can't compete with "free". The "subscription modela", you make some good points as to why they have it. But in reality, the subscription base is the number one reason people are leaving Adobe. I think that if it wasn't for Premiere being so popular in the pro editing world before Resolve, the subscription would have put a nail in the Adobe coffin by now. And it still might. My guess is in the future Blackmagic Design, in spite of pros protesting, will offer a home/light version of Resolve. The app for the ipad, to me seems to be an indicator of the evolution of that prediction. So not sure I would invest in any Vegas stock at the moment. This video is really well put together though - I really think it shows what the software can do, and reasons for using it. And that obviously, is the point.
As always, thanks for your feedback Jim! Regarding the explorer tab vs. media page, the difference is the media page is a separate page and you still have to bring the files into the media pool before you can use it in the project. The explorer tab is like putting that functionality of the media page into the edit page and allowing you to just drag from there to the timeline. It eliminates half of the steps needed in Resolve. Obviously, we're talking mere seconds here, but you know as well as I do how quickly those steps can add up. I agree that, economically speaking, nothing can compare to Resolve's free version (and I agree that there will likely be some sort of middle-tier lite version at some point), but the fact is that some people just don't like Resolve, and I do think that Vegas is a viable alternative, even with the subscription model. As much as people hate it, many have come to accept subscriptions as the way things are done for the most part, and if you really wanted to, you could save yourself another subscription or two if you just used the stock footage, music and sfx that come with Vegas. It's not a horrible deal I think.
Subscription offers some things that the perpetual license doesn't offer. If you have a version of Vegas, and don't need Stream, Primatte, etc., you can upgrade to edit right now for $79 and have it forever. No, you can't compete with "free", but it is also more than that. Ease of use is one of them. I have Resolve Studio, a gift a couple of years ago from my wife when the offered the Speed Edit in the price. I had to google how to export/render in Resolve, Deliver. Now, it's not an issue, but the learning curve is a lot higher with Resolve initially.
@@Reyfox1 Ease of use is always a relative term to people who are not familiar. I have been using Resolve since Resolve 9 - and I see things in some of these "easier to use" software that are nowhere near as easy to use. It's only because you aren't as familiar. And subscription models are the number one reason people are leaving Adobe in droves. They all add up is the problem - when you take each subscription they don't seem bad, but for me to do everything that I need to do you are talking about hundreds of dollars a month. So anyplace where I can stop that bleeding, I do ( if the product is still good ).
@@JimRobinson-colors no doubt, ease of use is purely subjective. For me, the transition from one editor to Vegas happened when I used it for 2 weeks, a Humble Bundle several years back. I've ignored Vegas because of it's (to me) butt ugly interface. I preferred DPS Editbay, and then Premiere Pro 6. Transitioned to Avid Liquid, and thought about Edius. I was hooked after 2 weeks with Vegas 14. It was (again for me) easy to use and fast for timeline editing. As I wrote, Resolve Studio was gifted to me by my wife. And while I could do some things easily, again, I have to google how to export a video. Go to the usual places like "File" at the top of the window and it's not there. Oh, Deliver.... It comes down also to personal preference. I know people that edit to me, upside down. Main track at the top track, and all overlays under it. Sorry, not for me. But they love it. I am writing this all the while Resolve 18.1.1 is installing. No subscriptions for me either.... But there are some things about how Resolve performs that I really like.
Unfortunately after 18 years of using Vegas I'm about to part with it despite its nice interface ... Vegas can't master any of the hardware properly ... Last night we did tests with an i9 13900f RTX 4080 complete tragedy unlike davinci it performs badly on the timeline with 4k as well as in the render. I still had some hope that they would fix these flaws with time, but alas ... 1 hour of render with these parameters 4k 8 bits 50 p for 1:07 Davinci render for 22 min
I have no problems whatsoever, but never render anything out for delivery in 4K. My clients actually asked me specifically not to as it creates playback issues, files are huge, etc. Shoot in 4K only so that I can reframe if I want to.
@@cineffect This is frivolous to say the least! To invest thousands of dollars in 4k and not use their full capacity. After all, you shoot in 4k so you can crop and export in HD, by this logic we would have stayed in the era of lumatic beta max and vhs... I honestly don't understand this...
@@magicartwedding Not all of my cameras are 4K capable, I still prefer the FullHD workflow. To me it's not about the latest technology, but how efficient I can work with it.
You don't have to use the Subscription-Payment method. I always buy a lifetime license. for example I payed 100$ for a lifetime Vegas pro 20 license as an upgrade from my Vegas 19, which I got for free when I bought Vegas 18 for around 120$ as a preorder deal. So once you have bought a license for one version of Vegas, the next version will be more cheaper ^^ Still 100$ is much money, no question there, but for me, a hobby-youtuber it's worth ^^
Jay U R Wrong at 1:24 U say "vagus will automatically open a project" So will Davinci in Preferences > UI Settings > USER > Reload last working Project on start up: 2nd line down right under Language. Loads the last project Ii was working on every time.
A lot of people have said that, but to be honest that isn’t always true. For certain types of videos, sure, but those are pretty much limited to talking head, simple blogs, and interviews.

It’s not for everyone (I wouldn’t switch either)! And yes I do know about that setting (I don’t have it on because I usually have multiple active projects at once), I’m just saying that the default settings are much more streamlined in Vegas if you only have one active project.
Vegas could be a flag soft for popular demand just with few new options like : - Chose position directly in the preview screen, for pip and more. - add more native effects and titles effects with real preview, not that bad eye. - option effect like Keyframing directly under the timeline. There are too much windows… - and at last stability. For the rest, Vegas is fun to use.
After Premiere F'ed me I'll never do another SUBSCRIPTION editor again. I 've used Vagus, an older version before DaVinci wasn't impressed. Still not. $156+tax, $240+tax, & $360+Tax, now your getting into Premier type money.
True, but with Adobe you're just paying to use the software. With Vegas you're also getting additional features, stock footage, music, and sfx. If you chose to only use the assets that they provide in the subscription plans, you could save a lot of money by cancelling your external music, sfx and footage subscriptions. It's not really a bad deal. Adobe is. Adobe is a horrible predatory deal. Plus, unlike Adobe you can do a perpetual license.
All depends on your workflow. I don't find it "clunky" at all - but I don't use the trimmer either. I just drop clips directly to the timeline and then trim the events directly from there.
I have never used the trimmer in the years of editing with Vegas. Everything can be done quickly on the timeline. Very quickly. I think the inclusion of the Trimmer is for those that are used to using something like it.
Wow your workflow is awful 3:36. I just trim in the timeline, and I use spacebar to control playback. I don't know why you complicate it so much if you dislike it the way you do it. I do audio-specific frame-related cuts like you do, but all you need to do is zoom in on the timeline.
Vegas wants a proxy !!! Proxy for 1 hour, a video is made in 2:30 hours ... Vegas is not smarter than me, I decided to screw it up, I loaded the same files into a Davinci and gave them an export as mp4 to hd, and on the export I set it to make them a file by file as the originals, the export takes exactly 22 minutes after the export, I changed the ending of the files from mp4 to MХF I loaded into a 1920/1080 project, made corrections and saved it, hid the folder and when opening the new one, I showed him the folder with 4 k, everything was fine, I could relax I'll give it a row .... This saved me exactly 2 hours of legal proxy .... Vegas can't master the hardware vegas has issues with codecs and encoding ... This will kill it unfortunately ...
Vegas' only downfall is the price. Otherwise it's objectively the simplest to use and most powerful video editor with the widest range of plugins available for the largest amount of purposes.

Pointing out how something works is not the same as complaining. And I do reviews of lots of NLEs. Part of the mission of this channel is to help people find the editing tools that work for them. There is no perfect NLE. There is no perfect workflow. Even Davinci Resolve requires me to customize a little bit. It isn’t a bad thing. It’s just how it’s built.

Do you have any tipps for me if its about decoding / converting stuff? For example: I do record my videos with nvididas H.264. (To be able to save multiple gameplays on my drive without running out of space) Well the problem is, its hard to eddit with this bs if you have long videos. Is there any way to convert H.264 into another codecs aka decompress the video for smooth editing?
If you’re working with Resolve, you can generate optimized media, which will give you copies with editing friendly codecs (i.e. DNxHR or ProRes). Not sure about other NLEs
OK then… You and two other people in the United States will use Vegas pro. The rest of us will use real editing systems. Why even consider the silly program when you have Resolve… And when it comes to color correction nothing even touches resolve… Not even remotely. And if you’re too lazy to learn resolve you can always go to premiere Pro which is pretty simple or, dare I say it… Final Cut. I guess the best comparison would be Vegas pro is kind of like a Ford fusion and resolve is kind of like a Tesla.
To answer all of your questions....because there is no "one size fits all" NLE, and there is no "best." There is only "best for me." One of the goals of my channel is to discover what's out there, try it, and report back. I still prefer Resolve for my own work, but I was impressed with what Vegas has to offer in this latest update. But let me turn the tables and ask you: did you make this comment after an honest and open minded attempt at using Vegas Pro 20?

He's probably just jealous that Vegas is actually proving itself worthy of the professional editor in 2022, and is actually putting up stiff competition. I've been editing on Vegas for years starting with version 13, and as someone who genuinely gave Resolve a fair shot for nearly a year, I can say Resolve does not fit my workflow. Far too clunky and confusing. Vegas does everything I need it to do, and due to its ease of use, is actually fun to use at the same time.

Me too, I’ve tried premiere pro but it just seems to complicated compared to vegas, the simple things I would do in vegas aren’t as straightforward.

Vegas is great for musicians - for people who already work in a DAW, because the workflow and logic of how the program is organized is very similar. I work in Cubase and I learned Vegas very quickly.

You don't have to use the trimmer at all (Unless that's what you did on another program (e.g. Final cut, premier).
Vegas has a better method where you to do everything on the time line itself.. without that middle Trimmer step.
So really, Vegas is better than any other in making it work the fastest way that you feel comfortable with. I do all the edit on the time line, cut, strech, trim, overlap just by pulling one over the other,
or even make it Fade Automatically as you drag each clip onto the time line. It easier to do than write about it :-) ... Just learn by watching 10 second clips on RUclips about anything Vegas.
Agree. I've tried to like the "Trimmer' - thought it must have SOME reason for its existence. But working on the timeline always wins the day - just a lot more intuitive and easy.
Vegas kills it agreed. Top and tail all in the timeline wins.
yes was looking for a comment like this. I'm trying to learn davinci because of how many issues Vegas has but the workflow on Vegas is unmatched. All you have to do is drag all of your video into the timeline and cut and make all your edits there. there's no need to import or trim or set in and out points. I think that's my main issue with all other editing software. it's overly complicated and not as simple as Vegas.
I'm glad to see you mentioned the layout and preferences can be modified to work with your workflow of using the trimmer. That's why the preferences are there - so you can set it up for your workflow and I can set it up for mine. Personally, I never use the trimmer. I just drop all the clips I want on the timeline and then trim the events from there. Whatever works best is the way the preferences should be set. And, honestly, I turn off the "Open last project" setting as one of the first settings I change!
Those default audio effects have been there as far back as I can remember (and I started on Vegas Video 2 shortly before Vegas Video 3 came out). Those effects are definitely functional but are not the most current of effects available. Fortunately, once again, you can change the defaults as desired but I've found that even these older default ones do most of what I need done anyway. Then I add in newer ones for any desired fine-tuning.
VEGAS Post (with VEGAS Effects and VEGAS Image) can also be purchased non-subscription. Edit, Pro, and Post are all available as Subscription OR Perpetual. Just change the option from "Annual Subscription" using the drop down arrow on the web page you presented and choose "New License" instead if you want it to never expire. But you will lose the ability to update after a length of time (so far, when the next version number has been released) and won't have access to the "subscription only" features.
Now the Hub downloads and text to speech/speech to text definitely do require the subscription version.
I agree with the trimmer it's just a useless feature to me, I thought the timeline does the job perfectly.
same here. I trim my clips in the timeline. To me, using the trimmer is redundant in Vegas.

The space bar can be used eaither as a PAUSE button, or a STOP button (been there since version 1 some 25 years ago. It's a simple selection box you tick (or un-tick) in prefrences.
On their site it has buy new license for about $250. Does that mean you buy it one and done and get updates for life or until vegas 21 ever comes out?
Vegas has scripting, which is not for everyone, but it's very powerful, you can automate so much.

What made Vegas so infamous was the performance, starting with vegas 11 there were introduced many improvements, but also glitches that totally overshadowed them. GPU accelerated render was so borked that if it (ever) worked it would decrease rendering time, only to crash mid-render and wasting the time saved, so CPU-only rendering was the best bet. Sliding the preview back and forth locked the program and the audio track settings were ocasionally ignored, Sony Creative Software pretty much neglected Vegas. The first release under the Magix brand was LIGHT YEARS from the previous Sony one (i could use intel QuickSync on a cpu as old as a 3rd gen core i7) and the RAM usage was almost half, ive seen vegas 12 crash the entire OS on 24 GB of RAM, Resolve never was my cup of tea, and after countless tutorials it still doesn't please me
My Vegas Pro 15 seems to lock up often....it has taught me to back up often. I always thought it was that my videos were so bad that the program could not stand working on my lame videos.
3:35 there is actually an option where you can change it that the clip opens in the trimmer tab instead send to the timeline. Hope it helps also good Video :)

You know there is option Davinci Resolve to open the last project automatically. The problem if project crash, like try to upscale 4x and apply heavy effect ends up in a crash loop .

You know what I hate about Vegas the most?
When you Render, click the Customize Template button, and at the bottom, click the Project tab. There is a setting of Video quality to render out as, and by default it's set to "Project Settings". Well my Project Settings has always been Preview on my Preview monitor because i was workin on an old chuggy FX8350.
So for 5 years I've been rendering out my final videos in Preview mode and had no clue because I'm blind, it all looks the same to me. Brilliant, Vegas, just brilliant. Anyway, change this drop down menu to "Best". And save the Template.
The second thing I hate the most is it crashes a lot.
I had serious audio sync problems with Vegas 15 so I dropped it altogether. Have they fixed issues with so4 decoder already?

1:25 not sure this is the case. I believe there’s a setting in DR to open most recent when you open the software.
I 1st bought Sony Vegas back in 2006, after using a hacked version of acid pro. I believe that was their audio recorder. Surprisingly all of those same filters and effects are in Sony Vegas. You can produce a song as well as a movie. I've just upgraded to the new version, but I've been using version 8 for over a decade.
You can just grab and move the trimmer. I just have mine docked between the explorer and preview tab.
Great review. Did you test Vegas Pro 20 for how well it implemented VST3? If it's done well, it'd be worth the price of the upgrade for me.

Tried Davinci but came back to Vegas, because Vegas is much smoother running and
a better editor. rendering seemed a bit faster in Resolve.

U need alot of ram and work with proxys then it works well.. i currently cut a showreel and i use vegas since 2005. aces is soo good exr support also.. i dont know what is better on premiere tbh

Most of the time I use trimmer for B-rolls, for what, IMHO, it is supposed to be used mostly. When you have crowded timeline and want to insert B-roll in some free spot and don’t need to take it somewhere miles away in the timeline, cut it out and insert where you want it. That’s where trimmer functionality really shines. And mouse scrubbing for in and out points is very intuitive. Love Vegas, other NLE’s don’t have many great functionality, which I think is crucial.
VEGAS need to give us more text effects, subtitles and lower thirds pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I had always used hitfilm. When I bought vegas 19 and opened up vegas effects..its identical..I said why did it open hitfilm at first.
I switched from vegas pro to davinci resolve studio.
I just gonna say something and dont hate me but after 6 years of editing using after effects, premiere, davinci resolve and vegas, in vegas it is too easy to cut/sync clips, other than that you gotta need to export to premiere/davinci or even after effects to add any asset and sfx
In fact, I was using Vegas Pro for 15 years before switching to DaVinci Resolve a year ago.
It was a pleasure using Vegas for editing on a Mac Bootcamp setup. However, after the Mac M1 was announced, Mactel on Bootcamp was no longer available.
Vegas Pro ran flawlessly on that setup, just like DaVinci does on the M1 chip.
However, I jumped right into DaVinci workflow and stop at Vegas Pro 19's... DaVinci workflow is super flawless and renders extremely fast.
When you work with Vegas Pro, you have to mess around with all those windows and panels, whereas when you use DaVinci, you can work on your action on 6 pages to design what you're working on.
The industry standard will be DaVinci in about 5 years. It's a powerful editing, color, audio, and 3D compositing program.
All in one... their only problem is developing Fusion animation so there are fewer nodes and steps involved in creating animation.
When I dive down and look at steps for creating some of text and graphic animation, there are a lot of steps for simple animation.
Fusion code is probably about 20 years old. A free CD version was available 10 years ago.
In DaVInci, things were taken from Vegas Pro, Autodesk Combustion, and Smoke and improved.
As far as what I used them for, there are similarities between all three.
I can confirm Vegas works flawlessly with Parallels 18 and Windows 11 on the M2 pro. I think i might be the first to actually get it to work haha.
I don’t know anyone in Australia who uses this software. Almost everyone is PremierPro or DaVinci Resolve. May be a couple of Final Cut Pro.
Nice round up. Unfortunately (for me) as soon as Magix bought out Sony Vegas movie studio they ruined it in my opinion. It's hard to put a finger on but it just doesn't work as smooth and easy as it used too. I bought Vegas 16 and I was done after that. I still use Sony movie studio platinum 12 to this day.

@@frostgodx @seaskimmer I had hoped that the Sony acquisition would have made Vegas more of an industry standard, but that never happened. The Magix acquisition unnerved me at first, but they don't seem to have trashed it. There does seem to be continuity in terms of the development team and I think there are still ex-Sonic Foundry guys there. Despite any reservations, I have continued to use Vegas for over twenty years as my exclusive NLE. It's just so intuitive and I think I'm too dyed in the wool to change. I'm sure I would be saying the same thing if I had used Resolve or Premiere from day one. In terms of workflow and functionality, I think Vegas is outstanding. In terms of stability, it's still a dog. I wish they would make a release that focussed just on improving stability with no feature additions. I mean, what more can they add?!
Resolve is pretty good, takes a bit of a learning curve but its a good free video editor without a doubt. Vegas is alot easier to learn though for some reason, but its a bit buggier and more unstable, crashing is more frequent but thats been the norm with it over the years. They both have their ups and downs
How stable is Vegas Pro 20, I was a user of version 14 and 16 and hell it was not stable and crashed fast and often...
I think it might have crashed once during my testing, and I’m fairly certain it was my fault lol. It’s pretty damn stable!

I had way too many things open on my PC. It wasn’t something I did in Vegas. Once I closed out Resolve and a few other programs it worked fine.
VEGAS Pro 20 build 214 is the most stable version of VEGAS I've used in years. In fact, I'm back to forgetting to save again!
Everything crashes at one time or another for various reasons. Every. Best to download the trial version (limited length you can render) and hammer it hard for 30 days.
One important correction you can STILL choose a perpetual license instead of a subscription, great video otherwise tho!
I used Adobe Photoshop for years for personal use. Bought regular updates. When Adobe moved to subscription based only, I abandoned Lightroom. Subscription based software is a no-go for me.

For some reason SOny Movie Studio 16 does not do a very good job at all load balancing rendering across Ryzen's 32 threads. It's kind of abysmal how littl ei takes advantage of all this processing power on my 7950x. It's 10x faster for sure than on my FX8350... but for the moneyI put into this and the horsepower it has, it should be 30x because it's leaving a lot of horsepower on the table.
4:11 tell me why you use trimmer? You drop every clip on timeline and cutting what you dont need. ITs 100x time faster than using trimmer.
Faster for talking heads where everything is on one clip, but not for vlogs or short films where you have multiple clips with dialog. At least not in my experience. Really hard to keep things organized when you do that.
@@JayLippman ive make movies for 14 yrs. Using trimmer is way to slow my work. Put everything on time line. Bind on "S" split and "D" delete and you throw out everyting you dont need without looking on trimmer window/media project window . Its simply and faster. Ive been editing on da vinci and in my opinion worst thing in vinci is that you cant click wherever you want on timeline or track to set up cut point (like in vegas). In vinci you must click on time bar what is so annoying. Ive tested all programs like premiere vinci vegas edius and think vegas is best for editing, and vinci is best for coloring. Try to edit on vegas and you will love how fast and intuitive it is and you dont need to know all table of shortcuts like in vinci :)
@@HalxFilmStudio Newest version of Vegas is just as good for color grading.
In Resolve under Preferences - UI Settings you can check for Resolve to open last project on start-up. Then you showed the Explorer tab - to which in Resolve is the same on the media page ( at the top ) and not sure how it could get any quicker than dragging in the media and Resolve saving the path to the media (takes literally milliseconds). I know you were just showing what it can do, but the inference was that Resolve was somehow not able to do these things.
But in a world, where Davinci Resolve has a fully functional free version, it becomes extremely hard to compete with it.
The only thing I can see is, if is a company like Vegas was able to perform on an older computer with way less resources, there are a lot of people that might be interested. And if that was the case, they should market it in that way.
Like I said - you can't compete with "free".
The "subscription modela", you make some good points as to why they have it. But in reality, the subscription base is the number one reason people are leaving Adobe. I think that if it wasn't for Premiere being so popular in the pro editing world before Resolve, the subscription would have put a nail in the Adobe coffin by now.
And it still might.
My guess is in the future Blackmagic Design, in spite of pros protesting, will offer a home/light version of Resolve. The app for the ipad, to me seems to be an indicator of the evolution of that prediction.
So not sure I would invest in any Vegas stock at the moment.
This video is really well put together though - I really think it shows what the software can do, and reasons for using it. And that obviously, is the point.

Regarding the explorer tab vs. media page, the difference is the media page is a separate page and you still have to bring the files into the media pool before you can use it in the project. The explorer tab is like putting that functionality of the media page into the edit page and allowing you to just drag from there to the timeline. It eliminates half of the steps needed in Resolve. Obviously, we're talking mere seconds here, but you know as well as I do how quickly those steps can add up.
I agree that, economically speaking, nothing can compare to Resolve's free version (and I agree that there will likely be some sort of middle-tier lite version at some point), but the fact is that some people just don't like Resolve, and I do think that Vegas is a viable alternative, even with the subscription model. As much as people hate it, many have come to accept subscriptions as the way things are done for the most part, and if you really wanted to, you could save yourself another subscription or two if you just used the stock footage, music and sfx that come with Vegas. It's not a horrible deal I think.
Subscription offers some things that the perpetual license doesn't offer. If you have a version of Vegas, and don't need Stream, Primatte, etc., you can upgrade to edit right now for $79 and have it forever.
No, you can't compete with "free", but it is also more than that. Ease of use is one of them. I have Resolve Studio, a gift a couple of years ago from my wife when the offered the Speed Edit in the price. I had to google how to export/render in Resolve, Deliver. Now, it's not an issue, but the learning curve is a lot higher with Resolve initially.
@@Reyfox1 Ease of use is always a relative term to people who are not familiar. I have been using Resolve since Resolve 9 - and I see things in some of these "easier to use" software that are nowhere near as easy to use. It's only because you aren't as familiar. And subscription models are the number one reason people are leaving Adobe in droves. They all add up is the problem - when you take each subscription they don't seem bad, but for me to do everything that I need to do you are talking about hundreds of dollars a month. So anyplace where I can stop that bleeding, I do ( if the product is still good ).
@@JimRobinson-colors no doubt, ease of use is purely subjective. For me, the transition from one editor to Vegas happened when I used it for 2 weeks, a Humble Bundle several years back. I've ignored Vegas because of it's (to me) butt ugly interface. I preferred DPS Editbay, and then Premiere Pro 6. Transitioned to Avid Liquid, and thought about Edius. I was hooked after 2 weeks with Vegas 14. It was (again for me) easy to use and fast for timeline editing.
As I wrote, Resolve Studio was gifted to me by my wife. And while I could do some things easily, again, I have to google how to export a video. Go to the usual places like "File" at the top of the window and it's not there. Oh, Deliver....
It comes down also to personal preference. I know people that edit to me, upside down. Main track at the top track, and all overlays under it. Sorry, not for me. But they love it.
I am writing this all the while Resolve 18.1.1 is installing.
No subscriptions for me either....
But there are some things about how Resolve performs that I really like.
Apart from the numerous crashes, it's acceptable.
I feel like a cat siting on a high place when using davinci, it makes me feel more powerful. But I wouldn't mind using vegas for audio

Unfortunately after 18 years of using Vegas I'm about to part with it despite its nice interface ... Vegas can't master any of the hardware properly ... Last night we did tests with an i9 13900f RTX 4080 complete tragedy unlike davinci it performs badly on the timeline with 4k as well as in the render. I still had some hope that they would fix these flaws with time, but alas ... 1 hour of render with these parameters 4k 8 bits 50 p for 1:07 Davinci render for 22 min
I have no problems whatsoever, but never render anything out for delivery in 4K. My clients actually asked me specifically not to as it creates playback issues, files are huge, etc. Shoot in 4K only so that I can reframe if I want to.
@@cineffect This is frivolous to say the least! To invest thousands of dollars in 4k and not use their full capacity. After all, you shoot in 4k so you can crop and export in HD, by this logic we would have stayed in the era of lumatic beta max and vhs...

@@magicartwedding Not all of my cameras are 4K capable, I still prefer the FullHD workflow. To me it's not about the latest technology, but how efficient I can work with it.
You don't have to use the Subscription-Payment method. I always buy a lifetime license. for example I payed 100$ for a lifetime Vegas pro 20 license as an upgrade from my Vegas 19, which I got for free when I bought Vegas 18 for around 120$ as a preorder deal.
So once you have bought a license for one version of Vegas, the next version will be more cheaper ^^
Still 100$ is much money, no question there, but for me, a hobby-youtuber it's worth ^^

A lot of people have said that, but to be honest that isn’t always true. For certain types of videos, sure, but those are pretty much limited to talking head, simple blogs, and interviews.

It’s not for everyone (I wouldn’t switch either)! And yes I do know about that setting (I don’t have it on because I usually have multiple active projects at once), I’m just saying that the default settings are much more streamlined in Vegas if you only have one active project.
Vegas could be a flag soft for popular demand just with few new options like :
- Chose position directly in the preview screen, for pip and more.
- add more native effects and titles effects with real preview, not that bad eye.
- option effect like Keyframing directly under the timeline. There are too much windows…
- and at last stability.
For the rest, Vegas is fun to use.
Vegas is the best overall nle available today.
After Premiere F'ed me I'll never do another SUBSCRIPTION editor again. I 've used Vagus, an older version before DaVinci wasn't impressed. Still not. $156+tax, $240+tax, & $360+Tax, now your getting into Premier type money.
VEGAS is also available as a perpetual version so you don't have to do the subscription.
True, but with Adobe you're just paying to use the software. With Vegas you're also getting additional features, stock footage, music, and sfx. If you chose to only use the assets that they provide in the subscription plans, you could save a lot of money by cancelling your external music, sfx and footage subscriptions. It's not really a bad deal. Adobe is. Adobe is a horrible predatory deal.
Plus, unlike Adobe you can do a perpetual license.

Like I said, it’s more the default workflow that’s clunky, not the software itself, and the workflow is completely customizable.
All depends on your workflow. I don't find it "clunky" at all - but I don't use the trimmer either. I just drop clips directly to the timeline and then trim the events directly from there.
I have never used the trimmer in the years of editing with Vegas. Everything can be done quickly on the timeline. Very quickly. I think the inclusion of the Trimmer is for those that are used to using something like it.
Wow your workflow is awful 3:36. I just trim in the timeline, and I use spacebar to control playback. I don't know why you complicate it so much if you dislike it the way you do it. I do audio-specific frame-related cuts like you do, but all you need to do is zoom in on the timeline.
Vegas wants a proxy !!! Proxy for 1 hour, a video is made in 2:30 hours ... Vegas is not smarter than me, I decided to screw it up, I loaded the same files into a Davinci and gave them an export as mp4 to hd, and on the export I set it to make them a file by file as the originals, the export takes exactly 22 minutes after the export, I changed the ending of the files from mp4 to MХF I loaded into a 1920/1080 project, made corrections and saved it, hid the folder and when opening the new one, I showed him the folder with 4 k, everything was fine, I could relax I'll give it a row .... This saved me exactly 2 hours of legal proxy .... Vegas can't master the hardware vegas has issues with codecs and encoding ... This will kill it unfortunately ...

Pointing out how something works is not the same as complaining. And I do reviews of lots of NLEs. Part of the mission of this channel is to help people find the editing tools that work for them. There is no perfect NLE. There is no perfect workflow. Even Davinci Resolve requires me to customize a little bit. It isn’t a bad thing. It’s just how it’s built.

For example:
I do record my videos with nvididas H.264. (To be able to save multiple gameplays on my drive without running out of space)
Well the problem is, its hard to eddit with this bs if you have long videos.
Is there any way to convert H.264 into another codecs aka decompress the video for smooth editing?
If you’re working with Resolve, you can generate optimized media, which will give you copies with editing friendly codecs (i.e. DNxHR or ProRes). Not sure about other NLEs

OK then… You and two other people in the United States will use Vegas pro. The rest of us will use real editing systems. Why even consider the silly program when you have Resolve… And when it comes to color correction nothing even touches resolve… Not even remotely. And if you’re too lazy to learn resolve you can always go to premiere Pro which is pretty simple or, dare I say it… Final Cut. I guess the best comparison would be Vegas pro is kind of like a Ford fusion and resolve is kind of like a Tesla.
To answer all of your questions....because there is no "one size fits all" NLE, and there is no "best." There is only "best for me." One of the goals of my channel is to discover what's out there, try it, and report back. I still prefer Resolve for my own work, but I was impressed with what Vegas has to offer in this latest update.
But let me turn the tables and ask you: did you make this comment after an honest and open minded attempt at using Vegas Pro 20?
@@JayLippman lol he probably hasn't even tried it yet, and probably never will. Typical Vegas hater. He's probably just jealous that Vegas is actually proving itself worthy of the professional editor in 2022, and is actually putting up stiff competition. I've been editing on Vegas for years starting with version 13, and as someone who genuinely gave Resolve a fair shot for nearly a year, I can say Resolve does not fit my workflow. Far too clunky and confusing. Vegas does everything I need it to do, and due to its ease of use, is actually fun to use at the same time.
More than 2 people use Vegas. Your fanboyism is terrible and does little to further your comment. I think that this is more a "troll" comment than anything else.
