Thank you Wendell for this video I’ve spent many a year going to the California Hotel with kids birthday party’s bowling and work dos..I really do hope that this hotel does not fall to the same fate as The Edgcumbe hotel. I was so shocked when I heard it had shut its doors… 😔
Its a tragedy when buildings are left to rack and ruin. But also sit empty when there are so many homeless. You were definately brave going up those stairs.
A great video . I go down every summer & have noticed how the Edgumbe has deteriorated. When I first used to go , it was a really busy hotel . They even had a Chevrolet minibus , that they used to ferry guests into town .

Wow! Scary place! It always surprises me that no one goes in and tries to sell the stuff in there, those cookers and freezers can be worth thousands, and even filling cabinets over £100! Or if people live in it, why they trash it? Super interesting! I’m from Great Yarmouth so very similar to Newquays story
I think they trash it because of inner frustrations…they’re not happy with the world…things haven’t panned out well.. The people that live there wouldnt trash it

Thanks for sharing this video. I started my professional DJ career around the hotel circuit in 1976 which included the Edgecumbe. Really sad to see the progressive decline of not only this hotel but the whole hospitality industry in the uk! We all flocked abroad for guaranteed sun with cheap flights and hotels, sadly we now see the results. It will probably get redeveloped into apartments for those who can afford.
They could of kept it nice and put the sharps in a yellow bin for collection. And kept the place tidy. No need to wreck the place. Great video oli wear protective shoes next time.
I had my wedding reception in the hotel california 27 years ago, sad to see that its going to be demolished. I also worked in the Edgecumbe around the same time. The first part that you thought was some sort of reception area (before you went in to the kitchen) was actually a serving table where guests would go to get their desserts in the evening. Where you first went through the window was my station! So heartbreaking to see it has been allowed to fall in to that state, it was one of thw better hotels back in the day!
I've stayed at the Edgcumbe, many years ago it was a decent hotel. My Nan used say that Newquay was a classy place when she was a youngster. The decay and lack of investment appears deliberate.

It’s a massive shame …. Back in the day the hotel California was pure class it drew people from all over the world , owned by the wealthiest family in the West Country. I went here twice a year from when I was 5 years old till I was in my 20’s the last time I went was about 2002. The food was was top class and had the cruise ship entertainment it’s such a shame it’s had to end
Hey, it really is a shame as when it was locked up On day of closure it was immaculate. In regards to the California, the hotel isn’t derelict there are people in it, that’s why is well locked up and you can’t get in.
Oh, that didn't look safe. I am happy you didn't stumble in something and fell into the broken glass and the needles and the ceiling fell down on you... Interesting but sad to see this decay.
Theres no nightlife any more so who wants to use the hotels, so many of the good venues have closed/never open, and the town is full of tiny little cafe/bars that one goes in. Yes Newquay had problems with anti social behavior back in the day but that happens everywhere, the NIMBYS moaning have caused the town to be dead on a weekend! Its only busy a few weeks in summer now. There's hardly anything left that will attract crowds.
Yes, sad to see buildings like these becoming derelict rather than housing homeless people properly. Shows that our failure to get rid of homelessness is purely due to the govt and other authorities not giving a toss. Asylum seekers, if anything, keep hotels open and stop many going the same way & when "processed" and if allowed to stay, generally make a very positive contribution to our country.
