His memorable performance is what you get when an actor of great talent realizes the best approach to the script and story is to chew the scenery and it works.

Sean Connery as Richard the Lion Hearted is the greatest surprise cameo of all time. I saw this opening night at the theater and the audience was shocked.
Connery was great in “Robin and Marian”. Think of it as the sequel to all these other Robin Hood movies.
RIP Sir Sean. Truly missed.

Yes, I saw it at the cinema in Glasgow way back when, and at the sound of Sean's voice the whole audience gasped. I always thought it was funny that possibly the most famous King of England was played by probably the most famous Scot.
Same here in Canada. I was 17 and saw it with a buddy and it was defiantly a OH WOW moment.
I hadn't noticed before, but I loooove how when he's sending Duncan away he instead tells him he's sending Duncan to keep Marian safe. He's giving Duncan some pride still I love that little detail.

Alan Rickman gets the most amazing lines & makes the most of them - "Because it's DULL, you twit. It'll hurt more!" "and cancel Christmas!" "well at least I didn't use a spoon" & that death scene was just beyond, the way he held the dagger out before himself then crumpled. just sublime.
And the spit hanging from his mouth as he stumbles. That's always a fascinated me for some reason.
That he sees it was his dagger that he gifted to Marion made that moment even better.
Those lines were improved too!
*This movie is probably why they hired him to do the Galaxy Quest television series.* Oh, yeah. It was a real series.
@John Wu it's really a very nuanced performance that showcases his entire range. he was such a master craftsman.
In my opinion, one of Alan Rickman's best performances.
Die Hard and Robin Hood are two of his most memorable performances for sure.
I think he'd prefered to be remembered for other stuff, not Hollywood bollocks he did for the money.

This has been the gold standard against which any other Robin Hood adaptation must stand against. Saw it as a kid and still love it to this day. It's got a great soundtrack too.
No: the Errol Flynn version is the gold standard.
Sorry, Robin Hood with a mid-western accent cannot top Errol Flynn!

Under-rated comment
This is the Robin Hood movie I grew up with. Everyone complains about Kevin Costner not having an English accent and the violence is pretty dark. I still love it.
The English they actually spoke in the 1190s we probably wouldn't recognize it anyway. As a noble, he may have spoke Norman French.

But not American.
What's more important is how he conveyed the truth and believability of his character as Robin Hood versus trying to wear a distracting accent being a thorough famous American. And he spoke with proper enunciation as much as possible.
Legendary Rickman performance. Essentially, iirc, it was a case of; "I'll do the movie, but I'm doing whatever I want with the character and you can't stop me".

Alan Rickman is absolutely amazing in this and steals every scene he is in! He was and still is my favourite actor. Another great Alan Rickman movie I recommend is Galaxy Quest.
This was possibly my favourite movie as a mid-teen. I found the way they portrayed honour, strength and romance to be so sacred and pure. Such qualities we don't see much of, these days.

One of the greatest movies ever made. You can watch it 1000 times over and it never gets old.
The script was a pure rip from the creative work of British screen writer Richard "Kip" Carpenter, who received not one acknowledgement. He created the British TV series "Robin of Sherwood", which was the first version of the legend that included a Moor who accompanied Robin back from the Crusades.
I saw this as a kid and didn't really appreciate the emotions of Will and Robin embracing each other as brothers. These days I can't watch that scene without tearing up lol
Morgan Freeman's character in this film was based on a character who was developed in a (fantastic) British TV show called Robin of Sherwood. The creators of Prince of Thieves thought that this was part of the original legend and added it to their adaptation. In Robin of Sherwood, the character was originally not going to be a recurring character, but audiences responded so positively to him that he was part of it throughout the show's run.
I think Rickman's (brilliant) Sheriff also owes a little to the Sheriff's portrayal in Robin of Sherwood.
Alan Rickman was actually an awesome person in real life! Look up how he was with the kids in Harry Potter behind the scenes! Man's a saint!
The prank Rickman and Gambon played on Daniel Radcliffe on Prisoner of Azkaban is legenday.
I had the opportunity to speak to him often while working on Bob Roberts & Dogma.
He is in fact one of the nicest most humble human beings I have ever interacted with.
His cast mates had delightful things to say about him from when they worked on Galaxy Quest too.
My mother has an autographed picture of Mr. Rickman. He even used her nickname when writing best wishes to her. Wonderful man, may he rest in peace.
Watch Sense and Sensibility. He steals the show in that movie also.
Alan Rickman was simply the best "villainous" actor of all time! The actor that played Guy of Gisborn was in the Disney version of Three Musketeers with Tim Curry. Another good one if you haven't seen it.

Costner is a bit underrated, he has so many great movies. Dances with Wolves, Bodyguard, JFK, Field of Dreams, A Perfect World, Tin Cup, Waterworld, Untouchables etc.
I feel like he was underrated due to his accent (Hollywood prejudice towards the south) but he's gotten his respect now.

@@sup9542 Kevin Costner was born, grew up, and has lived the grand majority of his life in Los Angeles County, California. He's not from the south, if you mean the southeastern part of the U.S.. He did, however, have a lousy English accent in this movie. That said, I love Kevin Costner is practically everything else he's been in. 🙂
I think because he always really just played himself, he didn't have huge range, but a fantastic leading man (and great director too)
@@rickpalacio7 Interesting, didn't know that. I wonder where he got his accent from, and what it would categorized as. Definitely doesn't sound like a Californian native. Maybe a mishmash of accents from his parents and relatives.
I worked with someone who worked on this film. I asked him what Alan Rickman was like, and he said that the director told Rickman to tone it down more than once because he was out-performing Kevin Costner in every scene they shared.
Alan Rickman is one of the best to do it. Galaxy Quest is probably his best film, but he was also underrated in Sense & Sensibility.
He was very good in “A Little Chaos” as well.
The Mel Brooks movie Young Frankenstein (1974) definitely isn't too scary for Carly, and she probably knows enough about the Frankenstein story just from general cultural exposure to appreciate it.

Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, Christopher Walken, Christina Ricci is a great lowkey "scary" movie. There's also a couple of Star Wars alumni in it: Ian MCDiarmid (Palpatine) plays a towns person and Ray Park (Darth Maul) plays the Headless Horseman when he's headless.
Definitely +1 for Sleepy Hollow.
Love Sleepy Hollow. A wonderful blend of creepy and humor, that is also a gorgeous film.
Sleepy Hollow is a good watch at least once. I recommend it as well.
Did not know that about Ray Park. Never looked up who was the headless horseman.

Robin Hood didn't rob from the rich and give to the poor, he robbed from the corrupt government and gave it back to the people who were unjustly taxed. A small distinction, but one that changes the entire narrative. Love your reactions!
Costner’s inability to do a British accent aside, this is still my favorite RH movie.
Brilliant movie with a fantastic cast and the icing on the cake - Bryan Adam’s “Everything I Do, I Do It For You”. A true classic.
If I'm remembering correctly they included that song on the credits with a partial of the music video for the VHS release of the film back in the 90's.
Seem to remember endlessly hearing that bloody song for about 10 years, it was number 1 in the UK for so long.
This movie was maaaassive when it was in the theatres. The Bryan Adams song ‘Everything I Do’ definitely helped the movie’s success.
Yes, this movie isn't really properly experienced unless you've been subjected to "Everything I Do" on high rotation radio for 3 months leading up to seeing the film.

1408 is a good psychological thriller....not really a horror perse....but it has John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson and it's a short story by Stephen King.....what more can you ask for?
I was probably 8 years old when this came out, and it became my everything. Nearly wore out the VHS tape. I couldn't begin to guess how many times I've seen it. And it NEVER gets old. One of the most perfect cinematic experiences of all time.

His work in Galaxy Quest was fantastic - he brought the same kind of laid-back-commanding-presence energy that he had in Dogma. You have to watch Dogma.

Not to nitpick, but T2 was that years big blockbuster. This was probably 2nd though, it was huge and I remember buying a lot of the action figures.

I remember going to see this movie in theaters at least 5 times. The song "Everything I do (I do it for you)" was the number 1 wedding song for years. Kevin Costner has one of the greatest smiles. And Alan Rickman was an amazing actor. He is sorely missed

I love this movie! It's not the most serious historical adaptation ever, but it's so earnest, fun, and full of heart. Glad you're watching it before Men in Tights because 80% of the jokes are referring to this movie.

I miss Alan Rickman..... so many memories of a wonderful actor in fantastic films. Truly a gifted artist across many genres.
If you think the actor playing Guy of Gisborne (Michael Wincott) was scary in this one you may want to check him out as the main antagonist in out in "The Crow". It is good adaption of a goth comic released in 1994. It would also be a not too scary pick for Carly to kick-off your Scary October. "The Crow" is a dark love story, but I fear it will most completely down you afterwards, because of the tragic real life implication.
Also the documentary filmmaker in "NOPE"and Rochefort in "Three Musketeers"(the one with Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Curry.)

I loved watching your reaction to this. Alan Rickman was a true Pantomime villain and Kevin Costner such a great Robin. I can remember when the Bryan Adams theme song was in the charts for what seemed like ages at the time. If you haven't already seen Ghost, I think you and your sister would enjoy it for Halloween- not too scary and a bit of a thriller type movie.
Michael Wincott is one of the BEST villians in cinema. Anything he does is sinister as hell, and he does it so well!!! Love him in all his films.

As an adult, I'm so impressed with what this movie did with so little, small sets, not "Lord of the Rings" size battles, just a good storey and great casting, musical score. tempo. I always enjoyed this movie.
It's funny how Kevin starts the movie with his "english" accent. As the movie continues, it disappears. Not sure if you noticed it...🥰
Where Robin rescues the boy, Wulf, from Guy of Gisborne’s men was filmed at Sycamore Gap by Hadrian’s Wall; The river scene where Robin fights Little John was filmed at Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales; where Marian sees Robin bathing in the water was filmed at Hardraw Force also in the Yorkshire Dales; “Nottingham Castle” was actually filmed at the castle of Carcassonne in South West France (near Spanish border).

This movie has been praised for its authenticity to history from the clothing, weapons and the fighting. When I was in high school in band the soundtrack highlights became a staple for our spring concerts.
Not very authentic in terms of geography and time it takes them to travel though.... Dover to Hadrian's Wall in less than a day on foot? That's only about 500 miles.
This and Men in Tights are the Robin Hood films I grew up with. Even though Kevin didn't exactly have an English accent, I still enjoyed this. Morgan Freeman was a badass warrior in this. Alan Rickman was great as well. May he rest in peace.

And for the record, this movie was on all the time in the early to mid 90s. You couldn't get away from it.
I grew up obsessed with this movie, I remember renting it from Blockbuster and Hollywood Video every weekend for months. It drove my mom crazy 😂. Fun fact, the director was Kevin Reynolds, who also did The Count of Monte Cristo.
This was THE movie summer of ‘91. We all went to see it over and over. And Bryan Adams’ song was a huge hit. He was pretty successful before this movie, but afterward he was a household name. Same with Costner, come to think of it….
I watched this on VHS dozens and dozens of times back in high school, and to this day, it is one of my favorites. Marian screaming "Robin!" still gives me chills every time. That entire hanging scene is so well done. I knew you would love this movie.

The actor who played Friar Tuck, Michael McShane was a friend of my mother's when they were in college. She loved Who's Line Was It Anyway which he was on and I thought she was full of it until she showed me some pictures of them together at school.
The American accent Robin Hood is so chefs kiss.
Just so you know. That whole opening scene (in England) is filmed on Hadrians Wall - yeah he gets from Dover to the North of England instantly apparently 😁. Now, I just realised you might not know what that is but it’s the (still remaining - although not fully intact) Roman built wall across the middle of Britain (just south of the modern Scottish boarder). Given I went to Newcastle University (in the north east, and it literally has a “suburb”/town called Wallsend - which I lived in and they have a fully reconstructed section and a few bits that still exist even in a big modern city. However the place most people go to see the wall is exactly where they were filming. And that section where the tree is is a very famous picturesque section of the wall with that tree in between two hills.
As I was so close I’ve walked long sections and I also Rock climb. And just the other side of the wall when he asks if “is there is no cursed sun in this country” is an excellent 30-50ft cliff for climbing. That’s actually why it was built there. The landscape naturally presents a formidable barrier.
I understand that modern thinking is that it was more of a checkpoint with people (Romans) living north of the wall. In fact there are several amazing Roman Forts in the area and the best imho, Vindolanda, is just North of the wall (I think). But popular understanding is it was built to stop Celts (Scots) from raiding south. Even today excluding Glasgow & Edinburgh, the population density north of around that point drops significantly so it would never have made sense to “occupy” Britain all the way to the North Scottish coast. Then again - there’s significant evidence a major factor in building it was to give the army something to do lest they get up to stuff they shouldn’t be as the area needed to be garrisoned at the time but it was hardly the toughest posting a Roman soldier could get.
It was started in 122AD during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian!

As a nottingham native and brought up on the legends, been to the graves, been to the caves, regularly went by the castle and sherwood, the disney and this movie are my favorite by far. The story is so beautifully told in this rendition ❤
Scream (1996) would be an amazing film for you to watch that fits your description. It’s a horror movie that doesn’t take itself so seriously with a comedic balance.

I thought of this one as well. The beginning is a little too much but after you come to terms with that part the rest of the movie isnt that bad, or doesnt push the threshold Cassie was talking about.
My absolute favorite rendition of Robin Hood. It had everything it needed to be a proper swashbuckling adventure, which was the spirit of the original works.

This movie was such a huge hit at the time, with an incredible score. I was a junior in high school the and in the marching/concert band (piccolo, if it matters)- we marched to the main theme and it always elicited cheers from the onlookers. We eventually got to travel to Orlando and march at the Magic Kingdom (where are my other Disney band nerds at, remember the "brown round-top door"?), it was the most exciting feeling in the world to come down Main Street, playing that score- all 200 of us. Even though we all got sick of playing and rehearsing the same music over and over, we never got sick of the Robin Hood music- it was always thrilling to play. This movie has such a special place in my heart for being very much of that time and creating those memories.

Things maybe on the level of Ghostbusters? Killer Klowns from Outer Space might be a bit too much if you don't like clowns. Ghoulies I don't remember but it was a bit too creepy?
The one for me though would be The Gate(1987) as it builds up to it perfectly. Maybe a bit slow and a few bad moments without getting to far into creature stuff before it takes off near the end. From what I remember. Been ages.

Watched this in the theater at the time and when King Richard (Sean Connery) made his appearance everyone erupted clapping and cheering because he also played the role of Robin Hood.
This reaction video made me bring out my Extended Edition Blu-Ray and watch it again.
It is highly recommended, as it adds a LOT to Rickman's character, and offers explanations about both his witch's powers and the relationship between him and her. It's "only" 12 minutes of added footage, but it's pretty much all important stuff! 😊
Yeah, I watched Prince of Thieves countless times as a kid, and when I discovered that there was an extended version as an adult I was blown away. I don't know that I'd recommend it to someone as their first viewing, as the theatrical version treating the witch's powers and relationship with the sheriff more ambiguously has its own benefits to the movie, keeping the audience in more suspense more regarding her and what to expect from her... but it definitely is worth checking out after watching the theatrical release. Certain bits with the sheriff that already work well are even better with the added context, and you can pick out details of Rickman's performance (and the witch's) that were definitely informed by the cut scenes.
I don't think one version is better than the other, just different, and both versions are fantastic.

I think you and Carly would like "The Frighteners" starring Michael J. Fox. It's a comedy-fantasy-horror-drama directed by Peter Jackson shortly before the Lord of the Rings.
Alan Rickman chewing the scenery was the best thing about this movie.
I'm pretty sure from what I've seen that this is the theatrical cut. There is an extended cut that adds some interesting turns in the story. The biggest being that the witch who is acting like she's some kid of fortune teller and advisor to Nottingham in this cut turns out to be Nottingham's mother. Her seeing of the future is a bunch of theatre as well. In the other version there's a hole in the wall which she spies on Nottingham in his home. So when he goes downstairs and she pretends to do some kind of spell to see what's going on she's actually just repeating the things she overheard and making it seem like it came to her through a spell. I actually quite like that touch. It makes her much more interesting. Especially when you consider that everything she's done is to get Nottingham to try and topple the throne so she can go live there and take what she thinks is owed her.

I remember having to watch Robin and Marion with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. My mom and my sister loved the Romance. Being a young man it seemed like torture. Now that I'm old I can see why they loved it so much. They are gone now so I watch it once a year for them.

I was 12 when this came out, I saw it three times at the cinema, visiting the adventures of Robin Hood in Nottingham with family. Its safe to say I was obsessed. So much fun, and actually pretty scary in places. And you're right, Little John is the best!
Robin Hood prince of thieves, dragonheart and the three musketeers (1993) movie were my go to fun adventure films when I was growing up. I watched them on repeat for years!

Rewatching your reaction, I'm struck by what actually makes this movie great. It's the way every character feels like a real person. Fanny and Little John and their kids, Duncan, Friar Tuck, Will, Wulf, Azeem...every single character is a lived in character. It's not a perfect movie, but it is getting really close in my book.

I have come to love this movie so much. It gets far more shit than it deserves. It's cheesy, it's very 90s, but it's a whole lot of fun and I love the cast and the characters and the music. It's exactly what I want out of a movie. Such a fun reaction to watch! I was practically squealing with you at times lmao
The Sound Track for Robin Hood Prince of Thieves had Bryan Adams' song '(Everything I Do) I Do It For You'. That was one of the greatest ballads ever. The song was out years before the movie but fit perfectly. :)

@@blakefish80 I initially thought that was the record I was thinking of, but that was only on the charts for four weeks. I think it was Wet Wet Wet that pulled the track, not Bryan Adams. It happened in the same year. While the singles charts of the 1990's weren't the same volume as the early and mid 80's it was still 6 digit sales and radio plays per WEEK!

It was crazy. Sadly most artists were screwed over by their label and or management. I think Boy George & Culture Club was nixed due to their presentation in videos instead of highlighting the amazing voice and fun they had as a band playing together.

Alan Rickman selling the line "cut out his heart with a spoon", he really knew how to play an evil character well. If you where around 1991 the Bryan Adam theme song from this movie was top of the charts for 16 weeks (UK), people where sick of it in the end LOL.

I was 19 years old when this came out, and it was ICONIC!!!! It has that unique quality of having glaring flaws, and yet, being virtually perfect, at the same time! The main theme and score by Michael Kamen; the scenery; the unique voice and presence of Michael Wincott as Guy of Gisborne; Morgan Freeman's Azeem; the beautiful Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio; and even Kevin Costner's horrible English accent (or lack thereof) were all just perfect for this film!! And, of course, I dare not neglect to celebrate Alan Rickman just chewing up the scenery as the most deliciously evil Sheriff!!!
I've lost count how many times I've watched this movie, especially back in the day! There was a time when I could quote this movie line for line, and, even still, I get more than I miss!!

I'm really glad that Costner didn't try a fake accent. It would have ruined the movie.
Even if Kevin Costner used an Italian accent it wouldn't have bothered me at all it's entertainment not a documentary!!
The characters, the story and the humour are what makes the movie.

There's a great story about Alan Rickman at a party where someone approached him for an autograph, he willingly agreed being the lovely man he was, but neither party had a pen on them. He was smarting from a less than favourable review, when he spied the Reviewer responsible across the room, he beckoned the man over, and went into full " Sheriff of Nottingham " mode, " This man will have a pen, he's a Critic ! " ....

The scene with Robin Hood splitting the arrow at the end of the training montage was originally developed for the movie trailer and was not planned to be included in the actual movie. The studio saw how audiences lost their collective shit over it and edited it in. The bit at the very beginning where we see Robin's point of view looking down the arrow at his bow hand, that was filmed in front of greenscreen using an 8 foot arrow prop with an appropriately scaled model of Costner's hand and part of the bow which were rigged to drop back simulating the arrow being fired.
Unrelated to that, when it came time to make the toys and action figures for the movie, Kenner dusted off the plastic molds for the Ewok Village playset from Return of the Jedi and used them to make the Sherwood Forest playset.
A fun and not too scary Halloween movie is the 1966 "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" with Don Knotts.
