Jane Eyre was honestly one of the most disturbing stories, in my own opinion. It just couldn't get past the fact that, despite the aged language and standards, everyone seemed okay with an 18 year old marrying a 40 something year old. And the way he talked to her just grossed me out. This video is the crutch that I've chosen to use in an effort to avoid finishing the darn thing.
what disgusts me the most is how this story is regarded as a romance when he is so violent and gross and in the end he gets a happy ending and tended to as if he deserved it by jane when he is an awful person, while his poor wife is demonized. I fell like bertha was trying to warn jane not to marry him, that's why she rips the veil. Bertha was the real victim of the arranged marriage, but our own misogynistic society paints the cruel Rochester as the victim. I don't know the intentions of the author, but honestly the ending is a tragedy, not a happy ending. Jane, who tried all her life not to be dominated, ends up taking care of a cruel old man and marrying him and everyone considers this awful fate as a happy ending!
