  • In this video I will show how to make a lovely cane using Mica Clay. This cane will make a gorgeous veneer that can be used for many things- home decor items, jewelry, handles on cutlery and for pens- to name a few. I will be using it to make 3 disks, for a necklace that i will do in next weeks video.

    From the first video I watched of yours, I was addicted. Your work is far superior to any of the videos I've watched. So much so, I blew my budget to smithereens and ordered ink, clay and etc. I am worse than a kid waiting for Christmas until my orders get to me. Thank you for waking up the creative bug in me :), and for sharing your knowledge.

      I am making a sign for the entrance to my craft room: "Caution Advised! Creativity @ 100mph Ahead. Proceed At Own Risk."
      If I had a nickel for every time Himself says "How can you even work in there?" or "That's a lotta stuff" or "Looks like Hurricane Aftermath". For a couple of years, there were many allusions to "didn't know Katrina made it this far north" [We're in Canada]
      So, Yes! A Sign! Need to practice my lettering anyway. Hope you don't mind Crissy Blevins, that I'm borrowing your saying.

    It is beautiful. I love the colors. What a fascinating cane process! I'd love one day to see your sanding and buffing process, how long it takes and what all you do. I've heard burnish and rub to eliminate fingerprints before, but never seen how carefully to do so. Thank you for showing that process!! I'd love to see the sand/buff process for the same reason. I still fail to achieve the beautiful glossy/glassy effect that you have with only sanding and buffing. Thank you for sharing. I watch all your videos. Rarely comment, but I'm an avid watcher!

    I haven't yet fond the answer to this question I have had. I've been looking, so I'll just have to ask here. I notice in several of your videos you use a laminate where you put your main color (the part that will show) on top of a base coat. Here you have used white, but in some you use black or another color. What is the reason for this? Thanks! I absolutely love your videos. So informational and you do make it interesting. I love them all! Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm new to polymer clay and I'm just amazed at what I'm seeing done with it.

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  7 лет назад +2

      I used white for this cane, because Mica colours have quite a bit of translucent clay in them, so if you put them over a dark colour, it really affects the look of the clay after curing. If you can imagine translucent clay over black would show the black through it. I could have used a pinker colour if that's the overall effect that I wanted, but white lets the real colour of the mica clay show through. The other reason I laminate my clay is so I can use less of the top layer- cut thin pieces of the cane. I also think that laminating the clay yields a stronger product than one solid layer- I don't have real research to back that up however :)

    again another great video.But could you answer a ? for me. you said that you bake at 275 for an hour. my oven that i have only goes in 10's so would either have to go at 270 or 280 is that ok or what would you do the other thing is when i bake for an hour it comes out so rubbery am i baking to long or not long enough. every one say theres come out like glass not mine. any suggestion

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  6 лет назад

      Knotty But Crafty thanks for the question, sorry I took so long to answer but I’ve injured my shoulder and in quite a bit of pain. You have to use an oven thermometer to be sure of the actual temperature in your oven. I have to set mine to 290F to get the 275F I need. Thin pieces will be kind of rubbery, thicker pieces should be much harder when baked correctly.

    What is the plastic you have your pieces on, to put the cut segments together, just before the patty paper was put over for burnishing? (I'm assuming patty paper is parchment paper maybe??) It looked as though you put a bit of muscle into the burnishing with the 'odor soap'. So far I've failed miserably at blending, burnishing, connecting and centering while sticking to any surface put on. Air bubbles smiling out if every piece. I admire the techniques you have mastered working with this medium. Try, try again and again. Not giving up. Somewhere between 30/40 yrs. ago I discovered white sculpy and had fun with it then. Definitely a proficiency to conquer. No where as easy as you make it look. :-) Thank you, excellent video.

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  7 лет назад

      That plastic sheet is deli paper, hard to find, but our grocery store uses it for prepared foods like chicken fingers. So I save it when I buy chicken fingers. It's perfect for clay to sit on, because it doesn't react with the clay. I could have used any paper, if I was going to work with the clay right away, but when I want to leave it overnight, I put the raw clay on plastic. Saran wrap works too. For burnishing I like parchment paper underneath the clay. Keep at it- it gets better with practice!

      I usually cut slices from the block about 10 -12 mm thick, and run them through my Atlas pasta machine, on a #2 setting ( 2nd thickest not counting the 0. I never count it as it's pretty much the same as the #1 setting )

    Why do you have to rest the cane and for how long such you let it rest please?

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  6 лет назад

      When you manipulate the cane , the clay gets quite warm and if you slice it when it's warm like that the blade will squish the cane,( distorted the shape ) and smear the cut as well. A cooler cane just slices better. You can pop it in the fridge for 15 minutes, or just let it sit for an hour or so, depending how cool it is in the room.

    I am new to polymere clay. I have heard you say bake for an hour and six minutes. What temp and is it in a toaster oven. Do you have a "new to clay" video or a website.

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  7 лет назад +2

      Since I use Premo Clay, I bake mine at 275F in a convection toaster oven. I use an oven thermometer to make sure that my oven gets up to that temperature. I actually have to set it at 285F to achieve the 275F that I need. That's why an oven thermometer is so important. I guess my videos would be more intermediate in content, though there is lots of great information for beginners too. Some other great sites to visit would be Cindy Leitz at Polymer Clay Tutor, and Ginger at the Blue Bottle Tree

      I meant using the cane as the pupil since the colors seem to pop radiating outwardly. But I can now imagine the cane as the sail part of the wings and/or smooth parts of the body. It would be a terrible shame to mark a scale pattern on such a beautiful effect.

    I have never sanded my clay pieces after being baked. I know you didnt want to show your station but could you go over it verbally if possible?

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson

      I just use pieces of wet-dry sandpaper, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit. Dip each in a bowl of water and sand with each of them for less than a minute. If you have imperfections you may need more time with the lower grits ( 400 ) Rinse the piece between grits so the wet dust doesn't build up. To sand it's best to use a circular motion. When you start the first grit it will put small scratches on the piece, the next grit will sand them away, but put it's own scratches, and so on until the finest grits remove all scratches. For the best results, don't skip the sequence of grits. Buff with a machine, or use wax and a soft cloth to buff to a shine

    Beautiful effect from this technique. Great tutorial! Looks like something even a newbie like myself could do.
    Can I add/blend in mica powder to plain colored clay to get a similar effect as the pearlized clays you use? Also, wondering why you used white on the back and not a coordinating color. TFS!

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Michelle, You could blend in Mica powder, but to get enough of an effect it would take quite a bit, and would cause the clay to try not to bond to itself. If you tried it, I would add some translucent clay to the mix- ( not liquid clay ) Most Mica clays have quite a bit of translucent clay in them- that is why I used a white clay, so that the true colours would show. A light coordinating colour would be fine also.

      Thanks so much for your quick response. I had to watch without the sound while watching TV with hubby, so sorry if I asked questions you answered in the video. Good to know to add translucent to my solid clay and mica mix. Maybe adding liquid clay to the mica powder before blending it into the solid might help it bind together. Guess it won't hurt to experiment with what I have. Makes sense to use white on the back now.
      If you're in the US, please share where is your favorite source, brick-n-mortar or online store, for the clay you use?

      You can mix Mica into clay, but it would take so much of it to get the same effect as the ready made accent colours. Also there is translucent clay in Mica clay, so that is why I use white- it really keeps the bright look. I could have used a coordinating colour also, but I would have made sure it was still a very light colour.

    ~TL;DR ~ If any experienced clay players read this comment, they'll add any little tips or tricks that will make my first attempt less of a disaster. ~
    The Story
    So, here's the thing. I have a tub of un-opened polymer clay. Every now and then I watch a clay video, yet the tub remains un-opened.
    I watched this video two weeks ago. At the time I thought "Woah, lots of clay skills that I don't have", BUT, ... I can NOT get this video out of my mind.
    I'm prepping for our annual Craft Visit, watching lots and lots of vids and in the back of my mind is "after this visit, I'm gonna have to find that mash vid again and give it a try. While my friend is here, I'll get her to prep some pop can bottoms for me."
    I'm also thinking that I'm never gonna find that vid again. Lo and behold, someone else made a "no music, thanks" comment and RUclips notified me of it, also, bringing me back to this video.
    I'm hoping over the next couple of weeks, if any experienced clay players read this comment, they'll add any little tips or tricks that will make my first attempt less of a disaster. I have all the equipment, just plain clay though. I'm thinking of adding some Pearl Ex powder to one colour to get the effect.
    I have subscribed to your channel and you may make a Clay Player out of me yet! At least enough of one that I can add some lovely clay pieces into my Mixed Media works.

      Thanks Sue, please don't be afraid to play with your clay, even if you don't like what you make, as long as it's not baked, it can still be used for something else- very little is ever really wasted! RUclips is a wealth of information, and a little overwhelming at times, but, really knowledge is power, the more you learn, the easier it is! Above all, have fun! To do this video though, you really need mica clay, you'd have to put too much powder in the clay ( and then the clay wouldn't stick together ) Just buy 2 or 3 Premo Accents in your favourite colours and have a go.

      For this cane you use clay that has mica already in it- such as gold or pearl clay. You don't add any to the clay

    I cannot find anywhere that sells turquoise pearl??? The closest to turquoise pearl I can find find is peacock pearl in the premo accents range or turquoise in the premo sculpey range ?? Is it one of these you are using or if not, the Australian distributor of premo doesn't have turquoise pearl.

      The colours that I used are Premo Accents in Magenta pearl, Sunset pearl, 18K Gold, and Gold. They are available in many palces including most Micheals and Hobby Lobby stores. I can't recommend on-line sites, as I don't live in the US, but there are many!

      You right l am sorry, if is from endcaps video, were you used a small tool, to make a endcap, and for making holes, and more think can you place finish on it before you bake, thanks again

    • @patriciaroberts-thompson
      @patriciaroberts-thompson  6 лет назад

      Well, some of the tools I used were a Bootlace ferrule, found in the electrical department. check on Amazon or Ebay for that, A cone shape plumb bob, or a large knitting needle and a hand drill to drill the holes after baking, or anything you like to make a hole before baking. And, certainly you can paint or colour your endcaps before baking if you like!
