i actually read another explanation for the term 'flash' and it harks back to the circus days of tattooing. the circus people were excellent at marketing and advertising and they understood that you had to grab peoples attention so the name Flash developed for the front of their many sideshow and oddity showcases, big bold advertisements basically, the tattooist hanging around at the time naturally picked up on the phrase...nice vid-
turn the music down please. your videos are great but I have trouble actually hearing what you're saying.
That awful music makes it rather difficult to hear/understand what you are saying.
omg im thinking the same thing
That's beautiful you shading really brought that picture alive.
I did some spit shading after watching this! Really amazing work, and very helpful :D
MORE Flash man.....That was so good. You make it look easy.
Gouache is opaque and water colour is translucent in tone, great work all the same fella. ;)
Everyones comments are so rude on this video! I personally loved everything about it, great job! Love your work
best tattoo flash tutorial for painting on youtube! thanks!
dang, minor details in this video really helped my flash painting! Cheers!
This is great work! I'm also looking for an apprenticeship, and it is difficult to get into. I have done a lot of my work in Prisma's color markers and would like to start doing water color. My local artist I am trying to get an apprenticeship with said you get a little more respect with doing painting and thinks it would improve my work a little more give it a more classic look.
Copic sketch markers (or ciao) and chameleon markers blow prismacolor out of the water bro 🤙chameleon markers blend better than any on the planet its legitimately crazy how well they blend. And copics are the best quality of marker no doubt
Just realized this was 3 years ago 😂😂😂😂 you probably know everything I just told you lol my b
those rose's came out bad ass!!!!!! thanks for the vid!!!!
I love it!! Thanks for the tutorial!
This video is to help people with their artwork...the vast majority of comments and likes are positive apart from the odd couple like this one. Showing people how to tattoo via youtube would be stupid but I don't see any videos showing that on this channel do you? There's no secrets here all it shows is basic watercolour for people who are struggling with it that's all.
awesome video man, found it informative and dig the technique! Going to give it a shot. Thank you.
@gdgtattoo
yeah iv heard FW Acrylic (unfortunately not what i have) works pretty well for flash.
I'll give it ago anyways.
Thanks a lot.
This video is brilliant and you are talented as! :) looking forward to seeing some more videos! Would be pretty cool to see you paint using colour too :)
@gdgtattoo fair play man, i figured that'd only be for the actual application of a tattoo and the machine, but i guess you're right :P
Loved the video, man. Gonna have to give it a go sometime
PERFECT. the picture and the words. teach me master!!^^ or wish me luck finding someone like you who will:) really amazing..
fair enough man, thank you!
nice work mate, real nice flash :)
love the video... do you use watercolor paper?
@gdgtattoo
Thank you finally i have my answer clear! Anf looking forward to them!
Just a quick question, when you spit shade, does the outline ever bleed?
It hasn't really done it before, but I've only used black to shade like in the video,
but today I decided to try it out with colours, and the outline bleeds into the colour quite a bit, the outline is dry etc etc.
I'm thinking it's either using too much water, and using rubbish watercolour pencils.
You are like amazingly talented! :) Think you should do a speed drawing of a lions head!
And also please could you tell me what music you used in the video?! If you remember.
that was really amazing! its extremely nice of you to take your time to do this for everyone! thanks for your secrets and your art. Any way you could maybe explain how to blend black and color together? for example a traditional rose will have the nice deep black on a pedal then the nice right red fading off, Im having truble keeping the color from mixing in with the black, it makes it llook like dirty red...... any help I will muchly appreciate it! Cheers from California!

@Gdgtattoo
When you use daler rowney for shading is it a water color paint or water resistant paint?,does it mix with your colors when you lay it over the black? Just having trouble with this
hey man cool tutorial i started doing custom flashes and whent to the shop and told him what i did he gave me acrylic artist ink its water resistant and pigmented is that any good because i cant get it right or should i just keep practicing with my pigment
That is so amazing, man. How do you go about doing color after the shading is all done? please and thanks.
How do you go about adding color? Do you use a fixative? I like the whole video as I just landed an apprenticeship and I am looking to improve my flash....
I did one drawing with Pelican ink and it bleed a lot even when dry, I though all ink is passable when dries it but this does not so can you recommend some inks that aren't a lots of money for practicing. Thanks a lot!
Raša Marković Indian ink by Windsor and Newton is waterproof (the one with a spider on it)
does acrylic paint work for making flash too?
great vid.
also did you ink the original design if so what pen would you suggest?
Great Vid bro!
How about listing a product list for the items you use?
Keep up the great work!
@gdgtattoo Awesome thank you! :) Great i'll check them out they sound like a pretty decent.
awesome tutorial, would you mind making a video on how to add colour to the shading? also, you didn't show a close up at the end! haha
Could you by any chance do a video showing the exact method of tattooing but on flash?
Hey dude, is it possible you could make video of blending different water colours together?
I'm having some trouble doing clean lines on rougher cold press paper. Any tips on how I can fix this? My lines are perfectly fine on hot press paper, I just can't get them nice on cold press.
You might want to check your facts about why it's called flash. Nothing to do with cops. It is artwork that can be done quickly without a whole lot of fussing over design. Hence the name flash. A customer, whether in a legal or dodgey establishment, could come in, say " I want that one", and it could be done quickly. Read some stuff about Sailor Jerry.
Yea music sucks and is annoying but ya know - y'all could either turn the volume off or just - ya know - learn yourselves by trial and error. Be thankful someone cared enough to post a tutorial.
best help dude cheers!!
Looks like you're using Gouache and not actual water colour pigment, both have different finishes and tones.
nice wOrk dude!
Thanks
Hey bro, would i be able to get the same quality product if i use a normal A3 sketchbook paper and normal black watercolour? please reply me as soon as possible. Thanks!
any chance for some sailor Jerry work?
what do you use for your outlines? the water colors as well?
Is this the type of ink drawings that they expect in portfolios? Or can I continue to do them in pencil
Do you moisten the paper before you start?
love the paiting but music ?
No offense but you'd need to do a hell of a lot more than shade a couple of roses to get someone like me to come into your tattoo shop. Lets see the work you've done on people.
Hold up, is that a shield potion bottle?
can you use any of kind watercolor brands? including crayola ones?
thanks bud
The flash story...did you just make that up? If the police came along, everybody would continue doing whatever they are doing. Its called flash because its your display. It was what tattooists would hang in their windows or booths to attract customers eye...by looking flashy.
Daler-Rowney I believe
never thought of using gauche. hmm.
nice job!!!!!what paper is ths???
Do you use color in any of your flash
But seriously thanks for advice 👌
youre both right. he didnt just make that up.
put water in your gouache and it's going to be translucent.
thanks for the vid!
disneymusicWHY!?
Had to turn the volume off. Was still a nice video
Had to stop watching cuz the background music
what you're doing is just regular watercolor. Not spit shading. I think you're confused here man. You try to tell people where the term spit shading came from and you were correct...from using spit...and THAT is spit shading. When you're not using spit it's not spit shading...it's just watercolor. I just thought I'd clarify that for you man. There's nothing wrong with not using spit. It's all preference and I'm not trying to come be a dick but thought I'd point that out to you. Good day sir
nice vidio thanks XD
What is the ideal paper to do this ? And your contours are made off sharpie or paint?
I use watercolour paper I personally use cold press fine grain but iv heard people saying hot press is better (never used it so I can't comment) and I'm using Winsor & newton atm because it was on sale at my local art store
What painting you used ?
whatever happened to keeping things a secret and learning things for yourself.
Man, that's not watercolour painting, that's gouache and you're not spit shading either.
Spit shading is done with india ink. You dampen the area your'e putting a dark in then spit shade it while its slightly damp. After that when you colour it you use coloured drawing inks. Because they are not opaque the blacks show through. You DONT want your black and colours blending. Ink is WAY more durable than watercolour or gouache. People aren't "recently" using inks, they always have been.
thanks . good info
Next time , just kill the music bro , it's nice work and all, but the music isn't necessary
Gouache ?????????
The only thing about this video disturbing me is that the music is pretty loud and its very hard to understand you as a not native english speaker :)
the music is...im sorry, really terrible? and also too loud. (but he is a native english speaker, just does not have an american accent.)
no i mean i am german and for me it is hard to understand :)
"spit shading" doesn't mean you have to use spit. Using spit is really unsanitary in my opinion and it seems like a lot of you can't grasp that there's different ways of doing things....
As for complaining about the music? Seriously? This is about the art not the music taste and saying someone is a bad artist because they have a different music taste is pretty small minded
Spit shading is something tattooers usually do though and to be an artist do be a bitch
inks "are permanent you make a mistake you gotta start all over again, I cant be bothered with that" ...........WHAT? Aren't you a tattooist? If you cant control a brush accurately enough not to make a mistake...well...you should be able to figure out what I am getting at.
Can't even hear you dude.
Dude.. wtf is up with the music.. Like.. FOR REAL?
Yeah that song is fucking terrible.
Oh and another thing stop being lazy as an artist and stop relying on that old school sailor jerry first grade crap that used to pass for art in the 50's.
Lol dude relax seriously. This is just a water color tutorial. I wonder what your tattoo mentor made you do to turn you into such a paranoid hater. Relax no one is out to get your job,
How are you going to call this SPIT shading and not use spit... not spit shading and you music is not tattoo artist approved.
youre cancer
