Wow. The MG owned this comparison. DSL was heavy and noisy. The cleans sounded good on both. DSL is too loud for the house? Get you a power soak and play that thing. You can get one as low as $100.00.
Guitarist6494 hey thanks for telling me! I have been looking for a tone like that because I want a good overdrive but still want awesome pinch harmonics thanks!
I had the exact same Marshall Dfx but was sad because it stopped working last year after years of use. I have a vid on my page of my playing a solo and i was quite happy with the tone.
This is the exact OPPOSITE of how a versus video should ever be done. And the 250 is the most hated amp in Marshall history for a reason. That being said, I literally just got one today for $25 from OfferUp lol.
I've heard some really great solid state amps, but the MG here is pretty disappointing. Just does not have the depth and richness of the DSL, which in some sense is to be expected. However, the Boss Katana and Line 6 Spider really show what you can do with transistors.
The reason why the mg sounds brighter is because it's an open back combo, the dsl is more bassier because it's an closed back cabinet, it's hard to explain the differences by typing
Yep, put the MG through a 4x12 (closed back) cab, then add a compressor in the FX loop and the sound will be much closer. Not valve like, but the tonality will be very close.
Thanks for the video! Both sound great but yeah... strangely leaning towards the MG here. It would be interesting to have heard both through the same cabinet and mic placement though. That would’ve had a massive influence on what we are hearing.
The MG, being solid state and only 2 speakers, was able to be cranked a lot more than the more powerful DSL which is why some people may think it sounds better. The quality of tone the MG has doesn't get close to the DSL once that is cranked. The mic position is the same. I placed the mic as carefully and accurately as I could, but the MG has stock speakers and the DSL has vintage 30s.
It’s a great demonstration of the difference between the two amps as they would typically be applied. What I was meaning is it would be really interesting to hear if there is really that much difference between the actual amps say if the only variable was the amps themselves I.e. using the same 4x12 for both and not moving the mic. I once owned a JCM 2000 DSL head and now currently own a mid 90s VS100 head. To be honest they’re not worlds apart despite one being lauded as awesome and the other not one of Marshall’s “finer moments”.
@@guitarist6494 speaker does make a huge difference. MG uses so many cheap parts, sacrificing quality. It is not about solid state or tube. It is about using quality parts or cheap parts. For the speaker, MG speaker has a much lower sensitivity, thus not that loud by default. As you have pointed out, once cranked, it is bad. It is because of the poor speaker, not the MG itself. I have a AVT, factory speaker cannot be cranked, but after changing speaker to a celestion redback 150w, it can be cranked very loud without sacrificing quality
Both sound great. I’d go for the mg because it’s brighter and that’s my preference. That being said the mg looks like it’s been banged about a bit with a dent in the front panel.
Nice comparison. Funny, I have those same two amps. Ha. I wonder if the 100 would've sounded any different is switched to 50 watts for this comparison just to try and push it a bit more? Still, well done. Nice playing as well.

Clearly, the DSL sounds better but i think its because of the speaker. I have a Marshall MG30FX, i've installed on it a Celestion Super 65 (G12N-65). The difference is huge! I really recommend it, if you want to hear a short video comparing the speakers, leave me a message.
I'm interested to hear comparison between stock and celestion super 65. Did you make modification for speaker hole? If im not mistaken mg30fx has stock 10 inch right?🤔
Thanks for posting this. My MF250DFX volume always fades out on me after playing a while so I just pulled the trigger on the DSL 100HR, so this video was right up my alley.
There is an easy fix for the volume problem. The problem is the two 2200f capacitors. Replace both with 4400f capacitors. An easier fix is to connect a line from the loop send to the loop return.

When you use TS9 so you use it over the Marshall gain or clean?
Amazing content! Good to see the regular uploads are back, fuuuaa👍
Rise again,little fighter❤
OMG that pokemon riff melted my heart😍
in my opinion i prefer mg for studio and outdoor band gigs while the dsl cabinet amp works for jams that has a lot of people watching.
Mg more open, clear tone, dsl sounds like a blanket covering the speakers. Mg way better tone!
The best sound of both amps... The clean channel.!!
Good keep itup
I like both amps they sound cool

Hey what pedals/effects do you use? I love your tone!
No pedals or effects. Only the TS9 in the clips where you see it. Thanks!

Both sound great, is that the new marshall mg102gfx or the old one?
It's the MG250DFX, so I'm presuming the older one
I recognize that pokemon riff anywhere haha
Anyone know if there is a difference in tone between a 250dfx and a 100hdfx?
Is MX 412 cab smaller than yours? I like your cab but what is the size?
They're basically the same size
Would the mg be suitabe for noel gallagher/ oasis-ey type tones?
An Orange 🍊 amp would be better suited for that kind of music. Although you can use a Marshall to do it.
@@sid35gb thanks a million, must keep my eye out
The MG you tested has stock speakers that are not that good. Had there been better speakers it would have not sounded flabby.
Mg250 sounds better to me

The MG sounds dirtier and more rock and roll that's just me though haha!
Mg sounds brighter, DSL sounds bassier and more compressed, I don't think you can go wrong with any Marshall

Man you should try the kemper :)
Is the 4X12 a 1960 cab?
its a 1960AV (vintage 30 speakers)
Now. This. Is. EPIC
For a fair comparison you should run the MG through the 1960.

Interesting comparison. Sounds like the DSL has the mic on the the edge of the cone and or the eq is too dark. A DSL is much brighter than this.
Great comparison!! I definitely like the DSL. I’d say the MG makes a good practice amp. BTW, it was cool to hear Black Diamond. 🤟🏻
What kind of speaker is in the MG250DFX? From the description the DSL100H has 4x12" Vintage 30.
Different speakers used.
YOu should have done it using the 4x12 cab for both amps.
Cheap crap speakers in the combo.
Different cabs, different speakers. That will color the sound so it's not a true A/B comparison, should've put them both through the same cab.
That MG is painfully harsh.
They both sound like they're muddy.... Too much volume for those mics? I don't know about recording
I have the dfx and you could make it sound a lot better than what you have your settings on for sure
Would it be nice if the comparison can be done with same cabinet
Both sound good. The DSL is way more compressed.
Creamy mids and smooth highs from the DSL. MG was pretty alright though
MG Sounds better
Great video, so helpful
