Been there, done that. A cardinal rule to be followed during driving on hills is never switch off the vehicle on descents or put the engine on neutral gear. Keep the engine running on gear with the same low gear mode that you would use while ascending the same slope. For example if you used 2nd gear while ascending a slope ( say 30 degree upward) use 2nd gear while descending the same slope downward. We learnt it the hard way while negotiating a long descent on one patch. In order to save on fuel we switched off our car. The breaks had to be applied constantly and after a while smoke started coming out of the wheels. The break pads had become tacky. We had to open the wheel rim to clean the break pads. Luck was on our side. It could have been much worse.
It was 1996 May. My wife, a close friend his wife with two kids, we started in my old 1985 Maruti 800 from Nagira, Sibsagar for Tawang, listening an unsuccessful travel story of one of our collegue. We halted at Tejpur for inner line permit and first night stay. Next day we passed Bhalukpong and on actual hills, safely passed the foggy roads to night stay at Bomdila. For our journey and stay we just depended on local knowledge. We got our car brake locked on the way that we could fix ourselves with tools we carried and few borrowed tools from a truck that was standing near. Next night it was at a all wooden pwd guest house at a village named Sangrilla. Fourth morning we reached Sela peak and took the most valuable picture with a signboard that displayed the height, and our first view of snow. Then it was downhill with a contrasting vegetation. By afternoon we were at Tawang, visited the monestry. The adults were tense and argued to follow an alternate way for return. We were someway accomodated in a Marwari guest house as there were no proper hotel. On our way return we met the cloudy roads, quite tricky negotiations all the way. Frankly, we rarely enjoyed the travel while on our way, but enjoy every time as we share our stories. This travel video show only one difference, the roads appeared wider. Great sharing brother.
@@parthajbhorali1660 Me and my friend got too well bonded on this trip that have grown strong with time. Also requested him to comment on the things I missed.
The dense fog we encountered after we left Bomdilla was quite scary. Visibility was only a few metres. To check on visibility, I stopped the car, asked you to get out and keep walking in front of the car and stop walking when I honk. I think you must have walked only five metres when I saw you vanishing into the fog.
