I've been a Mike Portnoy fan for many many years. The Rev WAS the a7x drummer and noone could truly replace him (he had sick backing vocals too). Otherwise he would have been the perfect man for the job cause he is an amazing drummer.
It's not about how intricate and difficult it is. If it were, then the whole song would just have a drum solo underneath the other instruments, which would sound shitty. It's easy for any good drummer, but it's how you feel the music and how into it you get that determines whether or not it's boring. Mike is too good of a drummer to be bored by this, as was the Rev with many of the songs from Waking the Fallen.
I think Mike worked so well as a fill in for Jimmy because their styles are so similar. Jimmy based his style off of Mike's so much, and it shows on Nightmare.

I love some of their stuff.
I wonder how many of these people saying The Rev was better actually listen to Dream Theater or Sons Of Apollo. Or progressive metal in general. The Rev doesn’t compare to the drumming in that genre.
I've noticed saying the drums are easy for him, while that may be true, songs don't have to be hard to be fun. As an addition he rewrote the drums for this track. However going back to my first point while it may not be hard, it could still be fun.

I LOVE YOU MR PORTNOY I WANT TO BECOME LIKE YOU ONE DAY
i dont understand why people compared rev and portnoy . come on guy , life must go on , rev already died , but he legend at a7x , so go on and support a7x no matter what
Fell in love with this song when I heard the drums on this song.
He kinda F-ed up on the second verse then just tryed to play along again I see that smirk Mr.portnoy
brooks wackerman is there new drummer
Their
My favorite drummer out there. Mike RULES...
Thanks for Mike portnoy to give deden noy.drumset, god bless you portnoy...
I still miss the rev
As bad ass that Mike is the Rev will always be the best that band will have ever had. Original, friends.
Im a massive fan, so don't take this the wrong way, but the rev cant hold a stick to Mike.
has nothing to do with skill. It's just how the members meshed and worked together. They were all childhood friends with Jimmy, so of course he was the best they will have ever had. He was also one of the main writers of their music.
It is what it is.
+Kooler it has everything to do with skill. In case you didnt know, Dream Theater was Revs favorite band. And once you look them up. Theyll be your favorite band also
Cody Cusack wouldn't surprise me considering portnoy was the revs idol
portonys the bomb
no he isn't mike portnoy, the real mike can't play 4/4
o famoso quebra galho kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk XD
Portnoy coloca qualquer batera no chinelo, poucos baterista conseguem reproduzir o que facilmente ele faz.
2nd the best drummer in avenged sevenfold
Don't get me wrong, The Rev's one of the best drummers of all time. But Mike Portnoy is far and away the better drummer. No question
Number of A7X's fans not appreciating Mike filling in is just weird
we all get it that the rev is not easy to be replaced but get over it, dude's gone lol
+ this song is practically easy for Mike to play compares to his songs on DT 😂
Mike has so much fun while he plays. Even if he misses stuff, his heart and soul is there. This is great.
This guy's legs must be so ripped from those base drum notes
This dude is bad ass!! For sure. But he's not the guy who wrote it.
No obnoxiously huge drumset, disappointed...
Is there a thing that he COULDN'T do?
Henry Tik sadly yes, going back to DT and make that band feel like a band again and not a machine
rafael rodriguez DT now looks like a robot without portnoy. But I'm glad portnoy's out there. He's giving us different type of music when he's collaborating with others :D
Ai tem frases lineares para pessoas que vão no Mc Donalds uma vez por semana apenas. Não para quem idealiza ir todos os dias e viabiliza seu complexo através de música!
I was thinkin he wouldnt nail the cymbals at 5:04-5:07 but damn..this guy is good! Major respect for mike! \m/
+Skrillex Fernandez What the hell do you mean? He is one of the greatest metal drummers that has ever lived. Typical skrillex fan.
Turbo Negro bruh..ik all bout dream theatre, i was a skrillex fan..the name is stuck there for now. Im an A7X fan..i know my facts -__-
Skrillex Fernandez But you feel like there is a chance The Rev could play something Portnoy couldn't?
+Skrillex Fernandez You can't even spell their name properly though.
Fallen ABR well..i cant really judge between them both cuz ive heard more avenged sevenfolds stuff than dream theatres.
Don't be fools, Jimmy was great, but Mike Portnoy is in another level.
Mike Portnoy playa drums like a six-armed alien from Planet Fuckyeah
1:14 missed 🤣
Mike Portnoy > The Rev
The Enchantress Mike=The Rev
Dan The Man Well, the rev looked up to Mike when he first started so TECHNICHALLY Mike > Rev
Stop comparing, metal community is good and you ruining it, so shut your badmouth
Daenerys Targaryen the rev is a legend
I love Portnoy's drumming (my favourite drummer) and yes he was more advanced than the Rev, but the Rev was far better than people give him credit for (I think he could have reached Portnoy's level had he lived) and, despite me being a prog/doom/death/black metal fan, A7X are far better than many metal fans give them credit for. I love some of their stuff.
I wonder how many of these people saying The Rev was better actually listen to Dream Theater or Sons Of Apollo. Or progressive metal in general. The Rev doesn’t compare to the drumming in that genre.
Jimmy was no match for Portnoy
Samual Stensberg yes.. thats better if they continue with him than with arin..
Its not a competition u moron
I've noticed saying the drums are easy for him, while that may be true, songs don't have to be hard to be fun. As an addition he rewrote the drums for this track. However going back to my first point while it may not be hard, it could still be fun.
As a drummer my self all I gotta say is that Both Portnoy and Brooks are miles ahead of jimmy. I know a lot of folks are gonna get all butthurt about my comment, but is true.
It doesn't have to be a difficult song to play. MP is just really creative with the drum line. It is a good song though and Portnoy's drumming really compliments it.
It's obvious why The Rev loved him so much
Mike: Beberapa detik sebelum verse pertama, dia pukul hi-hat dengan tempo 1/4
Arin: Pukul hi hat tempo 1/16
Mike: Waktu bagian kedua reff 2, pukul crash sebagai pengganti ride
Arin: Semua bagian reff pukul ride
Mike: bagian kedua verse, pukul hihatnya yang kanan
Arin: dia cuma pukul hihat kanan waktu bagian interlude
Mike: bagian interlude, bass drumnya sedikit dikurangin
Arin: bagian interlude, bassnya ikutin lagu asli
Am I the only one noticing that he missed the chorus at 1:15 ? :p Anyways, he rocks!
