  • This video talks about the 1985 Honda XL350R ridden by Charlie Sheen in the movie The Wraith. Its a classic dual sport motorcycle that was only produced in 1984 and 1985. Earlier versions of the XL350 were manufactured in the 1970's, but they were nothing like the XL350 manufactured in the 80's.

I have a 84. Right now. 07/13/2021. Sitting in a gym parking lot.
    I have a 1 mile driveway.
    I’m pushing 60 real hard
I have not had this much fun riding in 30 years.
This has become my go to bike.
It’s just damn fun to ride.

Just keep your eye on valve float..my '84 XR250' engine exploded..valve springs got to hot, floated, then piston collided with exhaust valve sending entire right top cover and parts flying into the hot summer morning june of 1989 air, lol..had to push it nearly 2hrs home.

34 is my favorite, same thing but it had the darker red in the black seat. I love the 85 but the blue seat in the orange just isn’t my style it looks good for a racy kind of look but it’s orange and blue, even though it looks decent it’s still a little tacky. 84 looked nice and I think that was the first year they put the front disc brake on it and that’s what did it for me. Throw an electric starter on there and that’s my dream bike

In the end, Jake gave Billy his super wraith car, but not his Honda.
I would have done the same :)

They still sold them in 86 they didn’t cancel them it was just the same as the 85 and then 87 they changed it up but it was new stickers and plastics but was still pretty much the same thing I think and I think that was the last year of the 350. From what I remember on the XL‘s in 86 they just did those red white and blue ones with the red engines on the 250 and 600 that was kind of their new thing. I’m not sure if that was the year that came out with the transalp but it was right around that time. I wish they would’ve kept going, I don’t see any advantage of the 250 over the 350, it was a tiny bit lighter but it was just too under powered unless you were 140 pounds or less. The 350 had enough and it was turkey and you can put two fat guys on it and it still did great. I was one fat guy in a 250 only worked on flat roads, if you started going up a hill or through some sand it kind of sucked and you just sat there wishing you had more power all the time. The 350 was enough. I drove the 600 for a while but honestly I wished I did gotten a 350 instead. The 600 was just a little more to handle and he had to be careful with it. The 350 was at perfect balance I had enough power for the hills in the sand and carry the weight of a fat guy or even two fat guys but it was still manageable and comfortable. Just a super easy bike with decent power that did it everything. It wasn’t great off-road but it was pretty good and it was still Streeterville enough to go for a three or four hour ride and be able to walk at the end of it. I miss it. The new Kawasaki and Honda 300s are still not enough power and are the same as the 250s I really am I guess if you weighed 150 pounds that tiny bit of extra power would be great but this is America we’re fat and we need a little more😅 I know a lot of the European markets kept a lot of these models going and had other options. We got the annex 650 and the trans out 600 but the European models had the dominator with the single 650 and they kept doing updates eventually they had front and rear disks and actually started looking pretty cool except for the big dominator graphics that were a little cheesy and they kept a lot of these med bikes going for a long time and had options we couldn’t get in the states. But especially in America and I think probably the UK and most of Europe I think they would’ve done very well to keep the XL 350. The only thing I can think that was a reason to cancel it was the XR 350 was kind of what this was built off of and they Wayover manufactured them and had tons of them sitting in warehouses so they just stopped in the XR 350 was an amazing bike also but they made a ton of them and they just weren’t selling fast enough to keep up with development, but I think they really dropped the ball on the dual purpose Street legal or XL lineup. Suzuki is the only one that kept up they went to the 400 but they put that stupid five speed on it and got rid of the six speed and the market is left without an option. I think they should bring it back just like that in 1984 and 85 colors same bike put an electric starter on it maybe a rear disc and little better forks and shocks and you’re good, get that nice comfy seat great twerk and plenty of power but manageable easy to ride power. It’s kind of the dilemma everybody looks for a dual purpose bike now and it’s either not enough or a little too much or ridiculously expensive. If you’re out there adventure touring there a ton of great bikes or if you weigh 140 pounds there are a bunch of great options but there’s really not much in between and until you get up to the bigger adventure bikes they’re just not comfortable they’re like little dirt bikes that are mostly designed to be written standing up and seat and Comfort is sort of an afterthought. But all the manufactures do this, Yamaha XT 250 is a great bike too but under powered and they got rid of their 350 and the TW 200 is a great bike but it’s kind of weird and quirky but a ton of fun as a scrambler/mild dirtbike but it only has a 200 come and put 350 on that as well and even with a huge cult following that’s what Half of the TW riders want even though it’s more of a lower scrambler type of bike, any manufactures of just dropped the ball and stopped listening to their customers because everybody riding the small stuff loves how easy and simple and comfortable it is but it’s all under powered and there’s no middle ground bike out there anymore except maybe the DRZ 400 but it’s got a crappy transmission and Crappy comfort. This was just a better all around Bikes for most people who wanted something simple and fun and cheap reliable and comfortable that could still get the job done

I think it triggered on some thing when you said it was an odd size and I keep getting rid of these. The Honda XL 350 the Suzuki DR 350 and the Yamaha XT 350 or all great bikes, they kind of filled that role of the 250 or the smaller dual sport or they were just very easy to jump on and go very simple ride very controlled the power Low maintenance last forever bikes. This is Zukey had some problems but it also had an electric starter option eventually and the 84 XL 350 was my favorite of all of them but I would’ve loved an electric starter on there but none of the manufactures make these anymore. They brought in the DR the 400 which is a good bike but the 350 had a six speed and gave you those gearing options off-road, Deere Z 400 is an OK bike but if you’re doing a technical trail and tight rocks you’re in first gear the whole time because you have no other options because with the five speed transmission it’s too wide the DR 350 was better in my opinion because you could get up in the second gear without having to be at speed so you weren’t stuck going really slow the whole time but the Honda was a better built bike in my opinion and they last forever but whenever they get these models they cancel them and it’s the same dilemma with everybody I know going to buy one of these bikes, The 250s and 300s are just a little bit gutless now, Kawasaki and the new Honda have the 300 and they’re good but if you’re a big guy writing to up you’re still wanting more power all the time unless you’re on flat roads and I know everybody loves them being lighter but give me another 35 pounds and a few more turkey ponies and I’ll take that all day long because you can put two 300 pound guys on an XL 350 in zip up and down hills all day long come on a 250 put one 300 pound guy on there or 280 pound guy and at the top of her hill he’s thinking damn I wish I had a little more motor because they struggle and the new 300s aren’t really much better than the 250s once you jump up into the 450 Honda or the five and 600s then you’re looking at a different machine then you’re looking at something with a good bit of power that you really have to manage pay attention to. Sometimes that’s great I drove an 85 XL 600 and I loved it but I had to be very careful not to get that front wheel up in the air every time I gave you gas, the 350 was a perfect combination you could give it a bunch of gas and it was very easy manageable power but if you really wanted to you could give it Enough gas to get the front wheel up with nothing but throttle but it was manageable 600 with Willie all day long like it was nothing but it was something you really had to pay attention to where it could definitely be too much. The 350 was just the perfect bike is specially for a big guy or riding to up because it had that kind of is that the 250 had just jump on it go have fun if you crack patrol too hard your front wheel might left but it’s not gonna send the bike flying upside down like a 600 it had front disc brake and these things were tough as nails just go forever if you can adjust your own valves which was really easy keep your filter clean and change your oil The Saints can easily go 100,000 miles and I kind of doubt all the new technology electronic bikes out are going to have many of these mid range models that do that I don’t think in 40 years you’re going to see a CRF 300 rally with 67,000 miles very often. I’ve seen an XL 600 with 141,000 miles and it was still in great shape. I don’t know maybe it’s part nostalgia but it’s exactly what I want a very easy manageable bike that has all day Willy power it is it gonna leave me wanting on a steep hill or some sand and has a nice comfortable seat that I can spend four hours on and still be able to walk at the end of the ride. I don’t know why the manufactures don’t have this, Kawasaki Honda came out with a 300 but it’s still like the 250 it’s just not enough power and the DRZ has enough power but they put a five speed on it which is OK but it’s got an uncomfortable seat and that white arrange transmission leaves you wanting for gears come back you’re going to do something technical you’re pretty much stuck with first gear for second years to high on a DR 35 at second gear was a lot closer and usable and you had six gear for the speed The Yamaha XT the XL, they all have these 350s and people loved them but they cut them off eventually and you’re stuck with an under powered bike or something much bigger and people miss these. I see it all the time now people are out and they get a calyx 300 or the Honda and they’re still complaining there’s not quite enough power. Just give us more Torquay wider power band 350 or 400, modernize it if you want throw fuel injection on there as long as it’s not too crazy and an electric starter and you have a bike that’s going to peel tall most every writer whether they’re 100 pounds or 300 pounds or want to take a passenger, right now your options are to get a much more powerful bigger heavier bike or live with an under powered 250 or 300. He’s old bikes or just a better all-around multipurpose bike they had enough power to get you around unless you were racing there was plenty of it and it never really left you struggling like every midsize and smaller dual purpose out there today. I wish they’d bring them back and go back to the wider more comfortable seats because not everybody wants to stand up and drive technical trails all day long and have hard plastic uncomfortable seat when they’re not riding that. It’s a dual purpose bike. I get it with Yamaha they took the dirtbike they kept the tight transmission ratios and made it a dirt performance machine with turn signals and that’s great if that’s what you want but I want to drill dirt roads and some woods riding and I might do some single track but I don’t care about winning or being fastest lap times I would much rather have a comfortable bike that was still capable of doing it but worked for everything else as well and we’ve just lost those options. I ended up driving a 619 78 honestly I’d rather have the 350 now.

they stopped making that due to the motor design, they did the same thing with the xr200r's for those years 84, and 85. The reason is with these models they went with the 4 valve dual carb motor, however they were problematic with over heating the heads and causing failure, after which Honda decided to keep the 2 valve single carb models in play for the up coming years.

Under powered back then. They were so slow for the street. Horrible street bike. Best to keep in dirt.. i had one. Was very disappointed. I got rid of it right away. I got the cool 85 Nighthawk 700 or 750 I can't remember but it was fast and i remember it being ahead of its time when you squeezed the
Front breaks lever it would increase the pressure to the front forks so no fork dive at quick stops. cool bike it was oil cooled had a oil cooler radiator in front of the motor head. shaft drive i miss that bike

Why Charlie Sheen rode this XL and not a sport bike (maybe a Suzuki GSX-R which was just newly released to America in ‘86 or if it came out earlier than ‘87 a Honda Hurricane) to outrun the bad guys in the Barracuda is beyond me. And why that bike’s motor doesn’t sound like it’s real motor is another baffling question for me.

My dad bought me a susuki 50 dirtbike at about age 9, I was hooked.
