Étretat is a French commune located in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region. This town is located north of Le Havre, on the coast of the English Channel, on the Alabaster Coast which is part of the Pays de Caux.
Once a modest fishing village, Étretat became a fashionable seaside resort in the 19th century and a favourite place for bourgeois and intellectual society in search of leisure. The site attracted artists such as Jacques Offenbach and Maupassant , who organised parties there for their circles of friends. Norman writers such as Flaubert, painters such as Marquet, Courbet, Boudin and Monet contributed to its fame, while immortalising its uniqueness and finding a source of inspiration that was by turns peaceful or violent, inhabited and mysterious. Not forgetting Maurice Leblanc, who lived there and contributed to the myth surrounding the site with L'Aiguille creuse, the lair of Arsène Lupin.
Its white chalk cliffs over 90 metres high, its three arches and its greyish pebble beaches , relatively close to Paris, have made it one of the places of international tourism with over three million visitors per year.
