No, they did own it. "Owning" means you can back up your claim of ownership with force if necessary. When you "legally" own your own place in most places, that means that you get the backing of the police and justice systems to support your claim. For the vast majority of the country, this is sufficient. However, in places where the government sponsored backing is not enough, such as the above video, the people there need to either keep their heads low, and hope nobody else notices them or cares about them, or join a gang to have them back up their claim on their spaces.

I’m from southern NH and it does stand out first time you ever seen a ghetto but to be fair, I was back up north this summer and Manchester Nh got 100 times worse and looks no different then Chicago and its crime and drugs. It’s just your used to driving through Manchester and not Chicago! All hoods are the same across America only difference is the landscape and climate. Trust me, I’ve been all over our nation.
A few years ago, I was serving some light time for a DUI in a Fed holding jail in Nebraska. I met a few GDs that had ended up incarcerated in Nebraska somehow. They were nice to me but definitely some interesting fellows. I was fascinated by all of the aspects of “street” or “gang” culture. There is definitely a type of intelligence that is needed and gained through what they do, but they don’t have the social or emotional intelligence to get out or change their situation. When you talk to them and try to get the to rationalize their worldview, you find out it’s just a never ending loop of placing value and respect on things that are counterproductive to living a healthy, productive life.
My friend is from Chicago, he told me when he was a kid he couldn’t wear any sort of color out and about. He left when he was 9 and only had black and white shirts and blue jeans.
That’s how it used to be back in the day growing up in LA.

Ever since a young boy I was fascinated with mapping the world, geography, I wanted to be a cartographer but I grew up on the west side of Chicago, I saw my neighborhood go from loving to warring… I genuinely grew up in the turn of a century and watched kids who played basketball together eventually kill each other… I waited so long for an accurate map of Chicago gangs for I had already started mapping them myself but this just takes the burden away

In certain neighborhoods it isnt the residents opening liquor stores on every corner it is the foreign investment… these things are by design I promise you, certain people are behooved to go to black neighborhoods and not open book stores but open liquor stores only in certain parts of the city block to block… segregation achieved disparity already certain facilities prioritized and maintained others deteriorate from usage…

I’m a life long Chicagoian. This could be solved. They did it in the 1990s and the city flourished in the 2000s. They could bring back the gang task force, stop and frisk and harsh penalties for gun crimes but they don’t because of racism or some BS. The state of Illinois makes it illegal for law abiding citizens to own most firearms but felons caught with guns are released within hours.

I’m from Woodlawn so I just gotta correct a few things, the GDs have been before the BDs (Parkway was a relatively safe area until the 80s but even then they were originally GDs) they became BDs after working for the Castle (Calumet Building) who were BlueFin BDs (BDs that are under the peoples nation). But even after that they still had GDs and Mickey Cobras. And also parkway isnt the main area for the BDs (there’s no main area because there’s literally no structure) and that’s not the main GDs area either (Jaro was only made in 2006 but even then JaroCity is BDs, GDs and Black P. Stones). The wars aren’t about Gang affiliation but actually about Hood affiliation (BDs beef BDs and clique with GDs and it’s like that with every gang in the city). (Edit I’m pretty sure Parkway also had Vice Lords and a whole entire separate hood based around its bottom area who were GDs and BDs).

Cops are corrupt, and even if some idealist young kid gets hired, his morale gets destroyed because he arrests someone for armed robbery or some other felony, but the prosecutor says, no bond let him go, and then drops the case a week later. This happens over and over. Then when the prosecutor actually decides to do their job, the judge will actually break the law and give LESS THAN mandatory minimum sentences. So the good cop either quits or becomes corrupted by the system. Just a year or two ago the head aldermin of the Chicago city council Assaulted another member to prevent her from entering the council chambers. If she entered, it meant they would have a quorum and could legally vote to change the law. The chief aldermin knew the law would change and he didn't want it to, so he physically prevented it.

Nah, that’s not really accurate, man. Chicago today isn’t the same city it was during the 80s-2000s when the gang wars were at their peak. Back then the murder rate was double what it is now and entire neighborhoods were war zones. These days, the violence is mostly localized not “everywhere” like the media loves to say. You can walk through most of the city and be fine, especially downtown and up north. It’s not completely safe, but pretending it’s still the old days just shows you haven’t been here lately.
