I suppose now that this is picking up views again and game dev is my full time job I might make a video revisiting this and what it has become (it's crazy what it morphed into) and even maybe answer some questions about unreal development from an MMO/live service game perspective. Feel free to drop questions in the comments and I'll try and answer them in a video.
will there be a playable version soon? the simplicity of the gameplay and the graphics remind me of what mmo's felt like as a kid, back when everything felt much more real and you could just roam around and get immersed for hours
@@LuigiPesto I'll answer this in the video. The game has changed a crazy amount since I made this video however and I'm not sure if it will still have that same vibe. While the graphics have remained similar, the gameplay has undergone drastic changes.
I genuinely wish you could. The game has transitioned so much from this state however(partially due to not wanting to infringe on Jagex IP and partially due to my desire to finally create the MMO i've always wanted to make) that I'm not sure how much interest you'd still have in it. If you're still interested I can probably DM you some screenshots or videos next week(I'm on vacation) of where it's at now and you can let me know if you'd still be interested.
@@Freemoney1000 I do not. I have older builds that I could put up, but even those are way more advanced then what you see here. That all being said, I did a lot of this live on twitch and if you have a few hours i have some videos here that you could recreate it yourself. That being said, I will try and get a build out this month of what I've been working on for over a year for people to try. I liked the core philosophy of OSRS and some of that is still present in the latest versions.
Seeing those lumbridge fountains was pretty nostalgic, in a weird sort of way. This is really cool man, it's a shame we can't have nice things such as this :'( Definitely following this, it'll be cool to see what you do with this. Good luck!
The game already got Runelite HD plugin in OldSchool runescape and RS3 has fairly high graphics also. The unreal engine work Riding Keys did is impressive, but he would never do fully functional public server as Jagex legal team would interfere.
Seeing way too much of these comments tbf, if you would prefer this, you like MMORPGs, you don't like Runescape specifically... Runescape is not just a map layout and quests, it's a LOT more than that.
@@I_Crit_My_Pants Folks who play RS3 I think would be comfortable with this. But those who are still playing OSRS strictly probably wouldn't care for this.
I absolutely love this! This is what I hope rs3 develops into. Something like final fantasy or genshin level graphics would be gameeee changing for runescape. btw I highly recommend anyone who plays osrs to give rs3 a try. it helps to know someone who plays rs3 to get into but its 10x more fun to me than osrs now. only reason to play osrs is for pvp really lol
No, its a wholr different gamr and expetience to osrs, you see osrs is mostly turn based and simple while rs3 has different mechanics and fighting system which removes that simplicity that people love, I gave rs3 a try but it wasn't for me.
This is amazing. Exactly what I'd do when I begin my game dev journey. RS has been my staple for at least 15 years, never got into WoW until recently and quit soon thereafter (before the shitshow lately) and RS was always what I'd want to base my MMO/RPG off of. I'd love a mix of RS/WoW/FF14 type deal.
With the renewed interest I might host some early access alpha stuff here in the near future. I'll be putting out a video in the next few weeks answering questions like this one and covering how this has transitioned into something new.
i want runescape ported to a similar style as genshin impacts open world concept. all of runescapes systems, except with a reworked combat to be similar to gw2's/bdo's style of action combat
Pretty cool. Did you custom design all the models or are they from like an asset pack? As if you aren't actually a 3D modeler then I could see how you might run into some issues in the future. How are you handling networking? IE, are you creating your own protocols or are you using a someone else's networking library. I'm a Unity dev so I use Mirror Networking quite a lot and it's fantastic so I'm kinda curious what kinds of libraries are out there in Unreal and how they match up against Mirror. I love working on MMOs so I'd love to see more about this project. You should consider starting a Discord for it if you are serious about trying to create something :)
Great questions. The assets in this video were from Epic Games. Epic let's you use them for free in all unreal projects, even commercial ones. I did make lots of modifications to make it work as the models were not built for a paper doll system. I made changes using blender to accomplish that. Networking was using most of unreal default networking with changes made to support a backend system written by me in C++. All of that info is outdated however as this project has now been completely rewritten. I use a mix of my own code and PlayFab to handle all my networking requirements, I have a very nice paper doll system for player armor, and overall the project is just in a much better place and runs a lot quicker thanks to the PlayFab backend.
Just curious, you mentioned this project was created purely in blueprints. Since you are focusing on work (as one should ofc), what is the chances of it possibly being open-sourced for potential Unreal newbies who may find it interesting to see the Blueprints/Layout of the project?
If you could make this but have the combat system function very closely to OSRS with the point and click instead of modern MMORPG dodging mechanics etc I'd be super down to buy it. Like over $100 super down.
Why is no one talking about the fact that it looks like you can attack mobs without them attacking you back? Hit, run away, hit run away - never get hit? The entire reason OSRS players didn't like RS3 was because it changed the combat mechanics. This looks like it would do the same.
@@yootantonystark2738 can't really go into a lot of details but we had talked about UE4 a lot and just how things work with it from a networking standpoint.
@@freakyguyonthewall I don't think it's related to RuneScape but if you look on jagex careers page you can confirm that they are working on an unreal engine based MMO.
Would be nice to have a game that is like runescape with skills to train, but with some better combat like Diablo/PoE or even just WASD movement and more traditional combat like BDO/WOW, graphics is the least important it's all about that addictive RS gameplay that has people still playing in their late 30s, my friends mom still plays runescape and has played since we was kids, started because of her son played it and she wanted to do something with her, there is just something about this game that is addicting and would be nice to see it modernized for younger generations
