Bengali version is more melodious, more soothing. Though I am non Bengali, Bengali version touches the heart in a subtle manner. Thanx for uploading both versions of such a lovely song.
No doubt the Bengali song 'Ei raat tomar amar' (film: Deep Jele Jaaye- 1959) or its Hindi version 'Ye nayan dare dare' (film: Kohra- 1964) remain as top favourite of most of us, me included. Just to share a few words on the composition and the composer: The beauty of the song is its hypnotic charm, its ever haunting, enchanting effect, composed & sung by great Hemanta Mukherji on the lyrics of Gauri Prasanna Majumdar, which faced some copyright claims from western tunes initially, as was expected due to its said effects but to say the fact, it continues haunting people over so many years and remains as nostalgic as ever. Film 'Deep Jele Jaaye', based on the short storyline 'Nurse Mitra' of Ashutosh Mukherji, and known as the best film by Asit Sen, with expert art direction of Bijoy Bose, editing by Tarun Dutta and excellent cinematography marked by silhauetted shots by Anil Gupta, did not lose its sheen inspite of all changes or advent of technology over the years in the cine world. Ten years later Asit Sen came up with its remake in Hindi (film: Khamoshi- 1969) with music composition by Hemant Kumar. While the nostalgia of 'Ei raat tomar amar' continued, Hemanta Mukherji toyed with the idea to have its Hindi version on the lyrics by Kaifi Azmi sahab for Biren Nag's film 'Kohra'. Two years after making “Bees Saal Baad”, Biren Nag had turned his eyes on Hitchcock’s film “Rebecca”- authored by Daphñé De Máurier, and made Hindi film “Kohraa”- 1964, with the same cast. The film was also produced & composed by Hemant Kumar, with the song 'Ye Nayan Dare Dare' which was sung by himself, as a Hindi version of his bengali song 'Ei raat tomar amar', keeping its enchanting power to the same level, except the amazingly wonderful whistling part. The music tracks and song tunes composed by Hemanta Mukherji, combined with his amazing voice and style, had a deep mesmerizing effect among music lovers across all shores of the globe. He garnered special regard from his western fans and after his tours abroad with live shows at BBC studio, Pebble Mills, Burmingham and elsewhere in Europe, including in US, and after scoring the music of Conrad Rooks's film 'Siddhartha', he became the first ever Indian singer to play back in Hollywood. Notably, the US Govt. honoured Hemanta by giving him the citizenship of Baltimore city in Maryland State, thus him being also the first ever composer- singer of India to get USA citizenship. A trial by western band of this haunting song 'Ei raat tomar amar', was made as a bizarre presentation of it by Mike Patton (vocalist in mr Bungle Band) in Cologne Fest 2000, and can be watched at 'Mr Bungle- Ei Raat Tomar Amar', which as a trade mark style of the band, is most unconventional, ideosyncratic, death metal screeching and growling!! Thanks for uploading Sir.
First of all, I would really like to thank you for the very detailed and interesting information, that you have provided about this great song. That said, I have a few more queries regarding this song like-1) The names of the western songs, from which 'ei raat tomar amar' initially faced copyright issues. 2) whether those copyright claims had any ring of truth to them or did they turn out to be completely baseless allegations later on?? I would really appreciate your answers in this regard..thanks again.
I have grown up from my childhood listening to this baritone voice which has touched me deeply. It's heavenly to listen to this magical voice in both Bengali and Hindi. He is considered synonymous to Rabindro Sangeet even today. Such persons are born once in 1000 years I suppose. Very few know that he left his Electrical Engineering at the 4th year level when he understood that he will do more good to the humanity by singing rather than his Engineering. I am a north Indian ( a non Bengali) and I agree with the contention of Abhijit Kundu. While Hindi song is great on its own merit and have some beautiful lyrics, the Bengali version is to die for- it is absolutely divine ! Incidentally in the Hindi remake of this film (named Khamoshi ) Hemant da came out with another stunner ' Tum pukaar lo' for the same situation as Ei raat tomaar amaar .
India has talents and will never have dried era of creativity. The Golden era of Indian cinema and melodious songs remains to be filled in. Hemnata Daa gets hearts and minds closeted in his above rendition..

Incredible Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay
When sleep does not want to meet the eyes, I listen to this song both in Hindi & Bengali version. I soon go to the realm of sleep. PRONAM TO HEMANTA MUKHERJEE 🙏🙏
The whistling before the song is mind blowing 🙏🙏🙏
A great man with a musical voice. I saw him singing in year 1972 in Dhaka and the venue was Modhumita. He came with his daughter Ranu Mukherjee.
