@@scott-i7t5c Here is how Mexico would not want to stop illegal immigration to the U.S. First, the Mexican government knowingly and intentionally allows cartel human trafficking to cross its southern border with Guatemala and to travel unhindered to the Mexican/U.S. border. Once the caravans reach the border, the Mexican government looks the other way and enables illegal crossings. Why? Two reasons. Mexico greatly benefits from what is called "remittances." This is money sent back by illegal Mexicans from the U.S. These illegals have not intention of changing countries, they are here for the money. These remittances constitute as much as 5% of the Mexican GDP. Second, most law enforcement consider Mexico to be a narco-state. This means that many, if not most, Mexican officials are taking cartel money. The cartel problem is vicious and deeply embedded. It will be tough to tackle it.

Yes, exactly. My brother-in-law worked in the foundry business his whole life. He saw the U.S. government allow cheap steel to flood the country from other countries. That "cheap" steel was subsidized by foreign nations with a purpose. The foundry industry shrank by 95% in his lifetime career span. One of the worst aspects of this, is that that foundry expertise (which once powered the U.S. military in WWII) has retired and it has not been replaced.

Why bother walking over when less than 1% of shipping containers is inspected on either side of the border, and organized crime (like the Hells Angels) are infiltrated into border security management. Canada has not taken advantage of America. Of course there is a trade deficit. America has 10x the population of Canada. They are going to consume more!
Don’t use logic. It’ll go over their heads. The other thing is the US gets Canadian heavy oil at a decent discount and that creates many US jobs and massive profits for the US. Trump is using that fact against Canada. He doesn’t understand business.
We buy more from USA than any other country, with 1/9th the population. We only have a trade imbalance as you are addicted to the cheap oil and the $300 billion per year in profit from the petroleum products refined out of the cheap oil, which, of course, are not counted in the balance. Between the discounted oil price forced on Canada, and then the refining profits you can't get from US or Saudi oil, you are screwing Alberta itself out of about $1 trillion USD annually.
This is really about Trade. Trump is right he does need to create a fair trade with Canada. NAFTA and so forth has been a free ride which was something the US did to help simulate growth for Canada. But Canada instead of growing and learning not to live off the free gift they became dependent on it. Thats why Canada is pissed. Canada instead of building a system to wean off of free trade with the US they chose to spend there time and money on woke policies and liberal socialism.
No, Cdns are pissed because we've been attacked by our neighbour. Threats of extortion by your president (small capital because I have no respect for him) -"do as I say or we'll annex your country". I live in an area of heavy manufacturing in Canada. I can't tell you how intertwined our economies are. The northern states like Michigan, Maine and NY need our resources and manufacturing just as much as we need them. There have been US mechanics on the news stating that they can't fix a car without parts from Canada. Free trade agreements are signed long term to provide certainty in the economy. Companies on both sides of the border need to know that they can import products at a reasonable price and this price is guaranteed. This is why tariffs are so damaging to both sides of the border, those businesses were assured that the prices would remain competitive. Also, Trump wanted to renegotiate NAFTA so we did during his first term. He signed the agreement and it's still valid. Trump is such a weak little man.
The thing about price increases on tariffed items, I can choose not to buy them if the price is too high, perhaps buy an alternative item. I prefer this to a tax on income, where I have little to no option on paying.
Does Canada need to win for USA to suffer such enormous pain that the bit of tariff cash may become a joke in return. How about Super Bowl Sunday with no electricity in the entire north east? How about 3-6 months to replace 25% of your daily oil consumption, and gaslines much worse than the 70s embargo?
Just cut off the electricity to the east coast, where the financial center is, see what happens to the economy. See what happens, when potash is denied to the US. This will be a disaster for food crops.
You are not up to date on what is happening in Canada. Trudeau has already said he will resign in a few weeks once a new leader of his party is nominated. There will probably be a federal election called immediately after that. All polls indicate that the new Prime minister will be from the conservative party (Pierre Poilievre). This is a good wake up call for Canada that Trump as gifted us. We will strive to find other customers for our resources.
@ronmclaughlin2515 there will only be a federal election in canada if all opposition parties vote in favor of the non confidence motion scheduled for mar 26... ? If the ndp backs out again, I think we are stuck with the new liberal leader until October when federal elections are "suppose to be"?
Read a bit and learn a bit;. Both USA and Canada have quotas on various imports. Once those quotas are met, then tariffs go in place. All of those tariffs are for when quotas are exceeded. There are no duties for any items under the quota. The first three are dairy. Canada allows 10% of its market open to USA, Pacific and the EU. USA allows 2%. Once the quota of imports is reached, duties are applied. For the US, it is a 10% duty, for Canada it is 240-300% tariffs. The reason for the 240-300% tariffs is simple. Canada is a small market which can be crushed in a few months. USA has a 3% oversupply of milk which represents 30% of Canada's market. US Milk farmers are subsidized, Canadians are not. Instead, Canada manages the supply of milk. USA routinely dumps milk on the ground, Canada does not, because there is a modest shortage of milk. Any US milk farmer would love to get 10 cents for each gallon of milk he dumps, that tariff stops that dime milk from going north. What Trump wants is no milk farmers in Canada. Canada does have a tariff quota on peanut butter. Both American and Canadian peanuts are made with the same American peanuts, but the Canadian peanut butter makers need protection, because Canadian peanut butter is more expensive to make, ie, there is more peanuts in Canadian brands than in US brands- US peanut butter has so much cheap crap filler in it, Canadian brands cannot compete. Regarding quotas, USA has a quota on brooms and whisk brooms. That is an odd one.
I'd like to point out that 4% of Canadians are American citizens, who still vote and pay taxes in the US. I'm from Michigan originally, living in Montreal. A trade deficit doesn't mean Canada owes the US money, nor that it gets "free money or subsidies" from US. A trade deficit just means that one country buys more from the other, than the other does from it, which is inevitable when one economy is 10x larger...and that doesn't justify trying to annex Canada by bullying it. That definitely won't work.
As a Canadian, we have endured almost 10yrs of insufferable Trudeau, and Quebec for CENTURIES. You underestimate our capacity for suffering. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

@ Trump had every opportunity to address dairy quotas but chose not to. Anyway dairy products are charged at 7.5% in the quota which sounds about right considering the U.S. subsidizes its dairy industry for billions of dollars .. again, Trump signed the agreement and now is not honoring the agreement -
@ and I saw in your earlier comment that you already got schooled on the quota systems that BOTH countries have and that was part of the last negotiation… 🤡
Ahhhh but you forget... Mr Gingrich....Canada and Mexico can seek other markets to trade with. Canadian oil, lumber, potash can be sold to EU, Asia, India, Brazil, even China. It would take time and a series of negotiations, but these countries would agree to unite as trading partners and America could do nothing about it. Even Wall Street Journal agrees this Trup tariff policy is stupid.
I wonder how much it’s going to add to the price when you have to transport products to ports, hire shops to transport this products across thousand of miles of ocean then pay tariffs imposed by those countries buying your products. The. You have to wait for your money to get paid while you wait for shipping time and foreigners to actually pay you. Sure, kid. You nailed it. It’s a win. Sure it is. A much cheaper solution for Canada is to do what Mexico has already agreed to do - fix border security.
Because it's secure, 1% of the fentanol comes from Canada and very few immigrants cross the border. 96% of the gun crime in Canada is from illegal guns coming into Canada from the US, it's all smoke.

I'm not getting it on Canada, not seeing illegal Canadians running around, and never heard of Canadian cartels? What is going on? This is not making Trump look good at all.
According to the Administration, many of the Fentanyl precursors come through Canadian Ports on there way to the US. Additionally, there are many restrictions on what US corporations can purchase in Canada. For example, a US bank cannot buy a Canadian Bank. Canadian Banks can and have purchased US Banks. Canadian media is also off limits.
There were almost four times terror watchlist on the northern border, fentanyl is coming in at the northern at an alarming rate, and illegal immigration at the northern has been the most in 17 years.
@michaelheath9889 Canadian banks are british, and everything you said wasn't mentioned by Trump. I'm starting to understand how this guy ran a casino into the ground. None of this justifies a trade war.
The Canadian banks are well known international money laundering entities, some larger organized crime groups have set up much of their finances in Canada because of this. So that's probably about the only fair assessment Trump has made about this yet.

From what I hear is . The trade imbalance of 200 billion dollars includes the oil Canada sells to the United States at a HUGE Discount. I don't think trade imbalance is that big.
@rags8855 i Think President Trump's idea that Canada is Ripping the United States off is short sighted. Tariffs on oil is Not great for the American economy. First off the Oil is not available at the moment for years in the U.S. to fill the demand. If ever . The U.S. refineries are retrofitted to refine western Canadian Crude. This would also take years to refit. This would leave Canada to sign other long term agreements with other countries, ie China , Japan and India. This alone would turn energy prices soaring around the world. This is a no win for either Country. Just look at the stock markets, they're already reacting
Canada and Mexico have learned a big lesson and are about to pay a big price. The lesson is; you were wrong to think the US would respect a trade agreement with you; the lesson is you were wrong to think that the US was responsible for safeguarding its own borders; you were wrong for not diversifying your trade practices and depending too much on the US; you were wrong to think that the US was ever a friend of your nation. Learn your lesson and look past this relationship to newer pastures.
The two countries allow the passage of migrants. They allow them to fly in knowing they intend to cross our border illegally. Mexico is completely ruled by drug cartel terrorists. These countries send their trash to hopefully collect money sent back home. They won't stop the drug cartels because that brings money into the country too. Really? You already backed down on Mexico…let’s see. Funny that the tariffs are still on Canada who only amounts to 1% of fentanyl and illegal immigration. Makes sense
@carlrice6973 Most of this list is over a decade out of date and no longer in effect as of the passing of NAFTA. Some tariffs remain to protect certain home industries. Tariffs on specific things can be effective but this all out war on our ally is self-destructive.
In 2022 or 2023 Canada sold $480 B into the US and bought $440 B in return. Per citizen, Canada spent $7.50 on US stuff for every $1 per US citizen spent on Canadian things. That IS quite a trade deficit! Canada's exports to the US are largely resources - such as supplying certain regions their oil, and supplying 90% of aluminum used by the US. They certainly couldn't win a head on fight, but if they, for example slapped export tariffs on things like Aluminum, companies like Boeing - already struggling in its competition with Airbus - could be hurt pretty substantially. The US would be hurt substantially if Canada were to re-think its trading relationships and decide that it would rather sell its resources to countries that don't use an un-provoked economic attack to undermine its sovereignty. The US National anthem has started to get boos at Canadian sporting events. When you launch an unprovoked attack on a friend and ally, you don't get to also dictate how they will respond to you. The NVA would have lost if they tried to go "head on" with the USA, but they still found a way to win by concentrating their efforts on just the weaknesses of the USA (like rich kids who had Daddy pay off a doctor to fake a case of bone spurs). Typical of Trump... he didn't really think this through.
Thanks for providing a nice summary. Not sure many on this comment section are interested in a more nuanced and objective assessment of a complex trade relationship. Easier to simply rely on the right-wing media's info-bites.

Canada and Mexico have almost no leverage because their economies are so much smaller than the U.S. economy.
canada have 4x more oil than usa(confirmed reserves) Canada can buy stuff from China instead too which is not good for usa.
Exclude oil and Canada imports much more from the US than it exports. That oil sold is discounted and refineries in the US are set up to refine this oil. If canada decides to use oil an increase in fuel prices will be quite the leverage. Yes Canada is much weaker due to size but it doesn't mean major parts of the US economy wouldn't be hurt badly.

Great Job President Trump
Trump is such a weak little man.
what are you talking about? 😅

Trump signed the deal. Guess he made a bad agreement. Now you're the victim?

Because it's secure, 1% of the fentanol comes from Canada and very few immigrants cross the border. 96% of the gun crime in Canada is from illegal guns coming into Canada from the US, it's all smoke.
Please secure your border to stop the flow of illegal guns and drugs into Canada. It's killing Canadians every day.
It is secured. The drug trafficking and illegals argument Donald used are quite literally lies, look up the numbers lol
The only think I agree with is we have an internal drug problem here. Immigration needs to be literally halted and we need a real leader.

It is not illegal Canadians
Canada allows in Gazans and Pakistanis who then cross into the US
In 1960 dad bought a house in Alexandria VA for $15.000. That house was last sold for $455.000. And the only difference being a dishwasher and AC heat unit.
Well, America politicians have had this endless printing press for 40 years, giving it away to Africa, Afghanistan, buying condoms for gaza etc. 37 trillion in debt. And they still don't get it, America is broke.🇺🇸
Canadian avocados!?.🥑😂
We can get them from Mexico or Morocco, 25% cheaper that American ones. 🤣
They better do it or they will be voted out of office. But i think when.pam bondi gets into the foj a lot of the. Will go to jail anyway.
Its time to put Americans first .

It’s the only thing yanks do, back stabbers of the worst sort.
I apologize for the bad comments. Most of America does not want any harm to come to the people of Canada. I think its just the leadership. We want the best for both of our countries. We love our Canadian neighbors.

Oh well, if Canadians wanna play hard ball, then so be it. 😂 we've been to war over tea and WON, this is nothing.
ironic that the war on tea was regarding tariffs
Canada fought in WW1 and WW2 while America did nothing but sit on its own hands...waiting.
From what I hear is . The trade imbalance of 200 billion dollars includes the oil Canada sells to the United States at a HUGE Discount. I don't think trade imbalance is that big.
Why wouldn’t it 🤪
@rags8855 i Think President Trump's idea that Canada is Ripping the United States off is short sighted.
Going to have avocado and corona this Superbowl Sunday! Can't stop celebrating 🥳!
Doesn't sound like friends or good neighbors to me.
150+ years of peace and friendship, gone.
Sounds like a liberal leftist to me. Rhetoric on top of rhetoric. Good luck with that. Peo0le have thier eyes open finally and are watching what's being put out there.

Even if the is a new agreement, Canadians will not forget how quickly our "Neighbor" turned on us.

We never turned on them. They benefit so very much from us and for years. Trump tried to reach an agreement with Trudeau but being the idiot he is, of coarse he chose wrong.

100%. People are so angry with how fast the USA turned on us. As they say in Quebec "Je me souviens" translated to say "I remember".

Really? You already backed down on Mexico…let’s see. Funny that the tariffs are still on Canada who only amounts to 1% of fentanyl and illegal immigration. Makes sense
A trade imbalance is not a theft or a subsidy; it is free market capitalism. Canada is not taking advantage of the US.
Canada has been screwing the US for years. Canada already imposes tariffs on these products:
milk (270%),
cheese (245%),
butter (298%),
poultry (238%).
eggs (163%),
barley (160%),
wheat (94%),
sugar (265%),
peanut butter (295%),
rice (150%),
vegetables (100%),
fish products (100%).
shoes (30%),
cocoa (30%),
tobacco (over 100%).
steel (25%)
