You know what's the most cringe thing about being slavic while on the internet? Random westerners claiming to be "slavic brothers" and saying "cheeki breeki iv damke, vodka, kvass, ak47" and that they're from a slavic country (They had one single ancestor from a slavic country that came over in the 1800's and don't even know where the country he's from is located)
Sadly, yeah. The thing about stereotypes, they act as a substitute for the lack of knowledge. The less we know, the more we depend on stereotypes. And Russia enjoyed monopoly for "representing" the slavic people for a long time. So, "crime, vodka, ak47" became the overarching stereotype (the movies didn't help). If one digs just a bit under the surface, there are lots of vastly different cultures underneath. It may sound ridiculous but I'm genuinely happy that we have "bober kurwa" and other modern memes overriding those.

As an American: I recognize that my knowledge on world geography (while definitely above average for my country) is still heavily limited. I definitely blame our schooling system which is in dire need of reform. I learn what I can when some country becomes relevant so im not a complete dunce... but i also just keep my mouth shut and my ears open when people talk about countries I don't know much about. Obviously, I recognize that the stereotypes are just stereotypes and not true representations of a country's people because I also see the stereotypes about Americans: in that while the stereotypes exist for a good reason, they are not representative. It's sad to see randoms catch flak because idiots cannot make this distinction, such as with your situation with the Russo-Ukrainian war. Like, yes: invading a country is bad and I dont like the Russian government for thinking it's okay.... but they are not a reflection of the Russian people whom I have nothing against. Vice-versa: while getting invaded is sad and we ought to be helping Ukraine, that doesn't mean that their government isn't problematic and isn't above criticism or scrutiny. The key is nuance and morons don't have it. I hope you are okay and that the Russo-hate isn't getting to you too much. Great video as always Alana.
I would argue that most of Russians do support Putin. Because the common outlook is seeing fall of USSR as betrayal by leadership (for which there is a lot of evidence), and 90s as a direct consequence of Western involvement. And Western politicians didn't hide their desire to split Russia again. 1/?
I am writing in parts to reduce the chance of YT wiping my comments. A lot of what happened in 90s was Western companies buying manufacturing, selling equipment for scrap metal, letting people go, sometimes levelling the land and building a shopping mall instead. Doesn't sound like investment, more like private equity. Or getting rid of the competition. 2/?
Most countries have protections against that, so e.g. China can't just buy all domestic manufacturing in US and scrap it, but there were no such protections in ex-USSR, as there was no legal precedent. Opening the country also led to a lot more "unsavory" cross-border transactions. Drug situation at the time was appalling, but human trafficking also became a thing. 3/?
I can write more on why 90s were a bad time, but that's pretty unnecessary. For 20 more years it was basically fine, with some issues like Georgia provoking Russia in 2008 (as stated by UN in 2009, but results of investigation weren't covered by MSM) or maidan and Ukraine deciding to wipe the people off the land of Donbas before it will go to its "rightful" owner (Shell and Chevron). Finally issues with government of Ukraine are also seen as more important in Russia due to how culturally significant WW2 is. So there is both a perceived threat from the West and a painful memory coming back (I guess one can say that there is country-wide PTSD) 4/4

Забавно что ты стал замечать эту русофобию лишь сейчас.
