- Eden End by J B Priestley
When Dame Joan Plowright announced her retirement from acting earlier this year, she brought to a close a remarkable career spanning more than six decades. In 1974 she starred as Stella Kirby in this production of Priestley’s Eden End, which itself was recorded to mark the author’s 80th birthday.
The play is set in 1912 in the Fells village of Eden End and revolves around the return of Stella Kirby, a ‘prodigal daughter’ who left the family home eight years previously in pursuit of a stage career.
Described by Priestley as a play for which he had “a special tenderness like that which some parents feel for a certain child”.
Set in Yorkshire, two years before the Great War - an elderly GP sees England and himself coming to the end of an era.
How will he cope with a complicated, coincidental family reunion?
Starring Joan Plowright, Leslie Sands, Michael Jayston and Geoffrey Palmer,
Written in 1934, JB Priestley described this play as one for which he had "a special tenderness like that which some parents feel for a certain child."
Described for the initial BBC broadcast as a "stereophonic radio version", it features the cast of the 1974 National Theatre production in London.

I have already listened to this on your same channel and it's great. I enjoyed it tremendously... ...
So whomever has not listened to this play take the time you most definitely will enjoy !!!
J B Priestley always leaves us with something to think about and we can relate his stories to our own, in some sense.
Oh that sinking feeling when they talk about their hopes for the next few years. All I could think of were the 4
young man of my family, who were to die in the war.
❤
Agree. One of the subtle tragic ironies is when Lillian says she’d like to go listen to Captain Scott’s talk when he comes back. In October 1912 (when this is set) Scott is generally accepted to have been dead, although news didn’t reach the wider world til February 1913. So as Lillian is expressing her wish, it’s already impossible.
Loving all the JBP!
Thanking you! 😘
🤜🤛fmd!
Thank you
Quite possibly my favourite play. A family unexpectedly and briefly reunited, all wanting what others have. I think Charlie is the only one who seems to have no regrets - he just seems comfortable being a jobbing actor.
Very enjoyable
The adverts drove me mad
Sadly the adverts were longer than each segment of play.
Please could you tell me what the intro music is to the J B Priestly radio plays?
I’d love to know, it’s a lovely piece
Shazam - at the fourth attempt - got this. It’s Brian Caine, Memories of Love. Really fitting for this play.
Thank you so much, checking him out now!
Adverts ruined it
Hi, without seeming rude I’m finding it very frustrating that there are so many plays that are re-loaded as new downloads

You're getting them free !!
( your comment epitomizes the outrageous sense of entitlement
and ingratitude that makes modern Britain the hellhole it has
become.! )
Don't be so obnoxious. FYI I pay for my subscription
If you can tolerate the first 8 minutes of the intolerable son ( Wilfred ) then
it improves. ! Difficult to believe Dr Kirby could be the parent of such a complete
wetwipe . !
