How to Get a Retention Offer on Your Amex Gold Card
Today I’m diving into the world of credit card retention offers, specifically focusing on the American Express Gold Card. If you're considering whether to keep or cancel your Amex Gold Card, this video is for you.
Retention offers are incentives provided by credit card issuers to encourage you to keep your card open and pay the annual fee for another year. These retention offers can come in the form of bonus points, statement credits, or even a reduction or waiver of the annual fee. They may also have a spend requirement to earn them.
One of the biggest benefits of credit card retention offers is that they can enhance the overall value you get from your card without any negative impact on your credit score. Unlike applying for a new credit card, requesting a retention offer doesn't involve a hard inquiry on your credit report. They also don’t require opening a new card account. This means you can explore these opportunities without worrying about a drop in your credit score.
I’ll also guide you step-by-step on how to request a retention offer from American Express. You'll learn how to contact customer service and what to say during your conversation.
By the end of this video, you'll be equipped with all the knowledge and confidence you need to secure a valuable retention offer on your Amex Gold Card (and other credit cards, too)!

For my wife the only offer they had was a lower apr, so the card went where it belongs, garbage. In a few months I'm supposed to renew my card, and I will give them one chance, if no offer or the same kind of garbage offer card will be cancelled without any doubt.
Me too! I’m thinking about canceling my gold card if they do not give me a good retention offer
@@runforrestrun2428 To be honest with you all, I have a feeling it may be difficult to get retention offers at this point in time.
Well done , the card is completely not worth it.
Is this the reason why AMEX is offering 90,000 point welcome offer? Because so many people are cancelling the Gold??
I did the same and I cancelled the card, y wife card is coming due and if we don’t get an offer it will be cancelled as well
Thank you so much for this video Mark! My Amex Gold annual fee posted April 15th and was rejected for a retention offer back then. I immediately chatted with them again after watching your video and BOOM they offered me the same 15K after $2,000 spend. Thank you so much!
Great to hear, congrats!
LITTERALLY JUST DID IT WORD FOR WORD AND IT WORKED! 25K POINTS FOR 3K SPEND FOR 3 MONTHS , YOU'RE THE BEST MAN!
Congrats & enjoy!
......WOW.....I like this data point, this one will keep me, so I will keep using my card every day until the af hits next month.
Bro.....he has been red pilled and loving the conversation between customer service rep and others! 4D Chess. ***Bookmarking this video*** for next year AF if apply for this card!
Yeah. No. Amex REFUSED to give me a retention offer. My renewal was in april. They absolutely flat out refused. I called 3 different times and they all did not even try to hear it.
Bummer.
Went in determined to cancel my amex plat once. Turned it down until the fee was almost completely waved. Still turned it down thinking it was a sales pitch. Then realized after i couldve utilized all the credits on a trip two months later to gain huge value lol. Felt pretty stupid after that one
😬 If you canceled recently, you could contact Amex again and see if they can reinstate the account.
Great video. My renewal had just posted two weeks ago. I followed your steps and I got offered a 25K for spending $3k in 90 days
Congrats!
Love seeing a way to get more value out of a card that will likely see an annual fee increase soon 😬
So do I 🌟 Countdown to (a very likely) $325 AF!
@@MarkReese when it goes to that price I am canceling
15,000 points for $2,000 within 3 months. I tried for more, but that’s the only offer they had available at the time. Thank you for this 🙏🏾.
Congrats on getting the offer!
Repeated your script and got a 25k point retention offer for $2k spend in 3 months. Thanks!!
Congrats!
On August 11 of 2023, I upgraded my green to gold and was not eligible for the welcome bonus on gold of course. I already paid the full gold annual fee in March 14, 2024. I might either downgrade back to green or cancel the gold entirely, especially with the rumored gold card annual fee going up. They better not use resy as a partner or else I’m out and going back to team no annual fee on Amex or back to green. I went on two cruises with green, but the credits are garbage. so I have a decision to make within the next few months to nine months from now
Never upgrade; always apply for the new card and cancel the old card
I was in pop-up jail
@@Miggy2222 Yup, unless you've already had the bonus on the card you're upgrading to.
I got the 10,000 point offer mentioned in this video last year for my Gold Card retention offer which came at perfect timing since I had plans to buy a PlayStation 5.
I've heard many DP on AMEX handing out retention offers on the personal Gold... this only means many valuable cardholders were cancelling
Thank you Mark, once again you came in the clutch. My annual fee just posted 3 days ago and I used your same chat responses and got a 10K pts offer and took it. It's my first year with the Gold and seems I got just the base level offer compared to the others in the comments but I'm happy to accept.
My chat agent threw me a curve ball and first offered this "we can use special rate where you would get $10 per 1000 Membership reward points as one-time exception. That way we can pay off the annual fee charged with just 25,000".
I countered with "that doesn't work for me since that's the basic $0.01 per point I get as a minimum rate with transfer partners. Are there any alternative offers available?". That's when she came back and gave me the 10K pts/$2K spend/3 mos.
Congrats & well done!
Thanks for the great video! I recently tried to get a retention offer on my Gold Card and it was like pulling teeth. Your offer of 15.000 points is better than the 10,000 point offer I got, but I took it. I was happy to get a retention offer and I was not going to quibble about it.
Glad to hear you got one!
@@MarkReese Thanks for the kind words! I think it is length of account that determines the size of the retention offer. I put like $12k per year on my gold card, but I only got my gold c ard a couple of years ago. I heard all of the good stories about it's point earning ability and I had to get one.
I accepted a 30000 points after 2000 spend retention offer in February . Will reconsider next year irrespective of expected fee hike
Great offer!
Followed your advice step by and step and just got a retention offer (they call it a loyalty bonus) of 25,000 points if I spend $3k in the next 3 months
Congrats!
Thanks I love free money 🤑
I only got 10k points retention for 2k spend last month, guess it depends on how much spend you put on it in the previous year
It depends on how much you put on the card,/if you ask for a retention offer last year/etc
Hi Mark, my renewal just posted a couple of days ago, and I used your steps and was offered 25,000 points after spending $3k within 90 days. I appreciate your tips and advice!
Congrats & enjoy!
Very well done brother, my af us due in July, and honestly if I don't get a nice offer I'm fine without the card and the monthly hassle.
Appreciate the tips on maximizing retention offers! You also inspired me with that competitor card play, will definitely try the same.
Seems like I always get the bad luck when it comes to getting retention offers. They love throwing the "but you've used all the credits already so it makes sense for you to keep it" lol
Gotta come up with a strong counterargument 💪
Data point: I just did this process, opened my card in 2022, and received offer for 25k points for $3k spend in 3 months. And this was 6 months past my last annual fee, so right in the middle of a year I already paid for.
Congrats & thanks for sharing your data point!
They refund a prorated annual fee if you cancel
@@links212 - It's my understanding that was the case years ago. But in more recent years, if you cancel an Amex card within 30 days of the closing date for the billing statement on which the fee appears, then you'll get a full refund. Beyond that period, a refund - in full or prorated - is not possible.
However, product changes may be eligible for prorated annual fee refunds.
@@MarkReese Ah I see, must be thinking of product changes then
I was given a $175 retention offer in April for my gold card, with 3K spend in 3 months I believe
Good offer, congrats!
Thank You! Got 25k points after $3k spending within 3 months
Congrats!!
I called several times . No retention offer. Also in Canada. I’m assuming all the comments are from usa
Bummer.
I also have had amex chat apply something agreed to to the wrong card twice! Now, I specifically ask the chat person to confirm that the closure or rention offer is attached to the card ending in 1234. I make them type the last 4 numbers to confirm they don't close or apply the offer to the wrong card.
Smart 👌
I come to this channel and just click on a random video in the list when I need a pick me up and to watch what this guy is up to next.
Increased annual fees don't affect me. I have the card waived of all fees with active military.
💯🇺🇸
I opened my gold card April 2023 and I spent 65k in 2023, in April 2024 I asked for retention offer 3 diff days after seeing my annual fee posted to the account, no offer☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
☹
@@MarkReese I also opened my platinum card in feb 2023, this feb I asked for retention offer, 3 times in 3 diff days, no offer. I spent around 130k on both cards last year, I was surprised to see that you have offer while you spent so little on your cards last year. Don’t understand how their system work😭😭
@@5215fdever - Bummer. I don't know either. That's crazy!
I had a similar issue, on one of my attempts, the chat team mentioned that I may get an offer to help increase the card benefit if I was to enquirer after the date I did so last year. I waited a few more days until the date they specified and hey presto! Maybe that’s just it…
Now you must to spend 4,000 in 3 months with the 2 gold cards. Thanks for your video
Correct 👍
Mark, why do you motivate non-profit people to keep bothering Amex? Didn't you think you are the reason they keep increasing AF and adding more coupons? Just close the damn card if you are not using it. Common bring something to the table and stop just exploiting people who do. So un-American I cannot stand it!
Thanks for expressing your perspective. Sounds like we see things differently, and that's fine. If you don't resonate with the channel or approach, there are others out there.
@@MarkReese I do like your videos. It's just this one seemed like contradicting with my views and values. I apologize for being too emotional in my comment. I hope you will get some value from it nevertheless. And thanks for your response!
I got offered 10K for 2k spend in 3 months. Cancelling the card and gonna use the CSP instead
Hey Mark! Do you believe that these offers are based on spend or time holding card? My AF won’t post till early next year but I should have about 19000 in spend. I will only have had it one year. Thanks.
Not sure. That's not data I have info on.
Appreciate it got 30k points spending 3k$!!!
Fantastic, congrats!
No retention offer available for me this year 😔
Same for me.
☹
@@MarkReese Wow! Now I feel lucky.
Keep trying, some people have gotten it after multiple attempts
My anniversary and fee was about 2-3 months ago but I might still try
You the only can do that it's six years done that 😮 you are the best
Seems like Amex wants to give a retention every other year. They quote you got one last year so we can’t do one this year.
That's been my recent experience, too.
Hey there, I just renewed my card this year. I wished I would have seen your video sooner!
You can still ask if an offer is available. Your call!
The king of retention offers has return!
Mark, is it "safe" to follow the steps in your video if my Amex Gold is my only Amex card? I don't want to threaten cancellation, only for them to say "Ok cya" and I lose all my points!
If the Amex Gold Card is the only Amex card you have that earns Membership Rewards points, then closing it will mean you'll lose the points. The agent will not close the account without you agreeing to it. An easy way "out" is to simply say something like, "Thanks, I need to think about this a bit longer. Please keep my card open for now."
Mark with the rumor going around the annual fee going up
Do you think from your experience it'll have a elevated welcome offer to come with?
I'm thinking about getting the card
Since I've never ever had it before
And I want the most points I can get even with a higher annual fee
There isn't a way for me to know. I sure hope to see higher welcome offers!
My AMEX Gold Card AF posts next month on July 11th. Can I attempt to get the retention offer before it posts? I spent $5k on this card last year, but I don't live in an area that I can use the Uber or Grubhub credits. I assume they will give me an offer, but I am really considering closing and opening a $0AF card to park my MR points on. I just value CO and UR points higher than Amex points and tend to focus my spending on other cards personally. I hope I get a good one since the Gold card has a bit of a cool factor.
You can ask whenever you like.
I got 50k for 4k spend. Took it
🏆🏆🏆
What if i use 5% cash back cards on everything and then buy points when they are on sale. Would this strategy out earn the points strategy ?
When points are maximized highly, no.
Thanks for this interesting new video Mark!
Do you know if it s possible to get two retention amex offers for the same amex card two years in a row ?
Not sure these days. I haven't gotten back-to-back retention offers in awhile.
They didnt give me any offer this year for me sadly😢
Do something ab out this!!!!! didn't up!! im hurting
☹
Every other year
Make sense! This was my first year having it. My first annual fee was when I apply this card. So on the 2nd renewal?
@@jaykid007year 1 then every other year I've heard
Are there any retention offers available for CHASE annual fee cards?
Yeah I would like to know as well!
Occasionally, yes. Chase often does smaller statement credits.
This is my first year and about to hit my annual fee .. can I do this year or should I do next year ..??
Up to you! It's possible to get a retention offer after Year 1.
It's actually been awhile since a "I keep amex because of retention bonus" videos
True. Don't think I'd ever ask Amex for a retention offer though until I get all the card subs from them first. Scared that will put me in popup jail if I do.
I went ahead and tried, being careful with my wording and got a 25k pts offer for $3k spend
Congrats on receiving the offer!
Thank you so much. I just did this for my gold card unfortunately only got 10,000 MR points.
Congrats on getting the 10K!
I tried recently with my Platinum and there were no offers. But they said I should check back in a few days. I wonder if that would make any differences?
It could! Check out the comment by Yamah Naim / @thecreditcardmd
@@MarkReese ok! I'll give it a try!
@@MarkReese 2nd attempt also no offers, I went ahead and cancelled the card. It just takes a lot of work to track all the credits. I will be upgrading my CSP to CSR later this year.
@@MarkReese I just cancelled the Platinum card, and I already have a green card. Now it seems like I get an upgrade offer from Green to the Platinum and I will get 25k MR points after spending 2k. If I do that, will they red flag me? I also get an upgrade offer to Gold for 15k points after spending 1k, I wonder if I do that first and will I get another upgrade offer to Platinum may be next year?
@@wshnus - There isn't a way for me to know what Amex will / will not do. Accepting an upgrade offer should not be a problem provided you keep your account upgraded for a full year. If the Platinum Card doesn't make sense for you & if you find it frustrating to use all the credits, then 25K points likely isn't worth it.
Damn you dont spend any money 😂 im going to see what they can do for me come time. Thanks
Go get it!
Thanks for the info + video!
Hi Mark. I got 25k/$3k/3 months on Plat. It doesn’t completely offset the AF but helps a bit. Was hoping for a higher offer. Still new to this. Is there an optimum time to ask for retention offer? Before/after AF hits?
Congrats! I'm not aware of an optimum time.
You hit them hard with the the US bank plow!!!
You said you have 2 gold cards, are the second one is for an authorized user???
No they're both mine.
Oh ok, I don’t think they had a retention offer for an authorized user also right? 😂
@@jvb24404 - I've never heard of an authorized user retention offer.
when you said another account, did you mean an authorized user account or other accounts totally? thanks for your video!!
I have 2 separate Gold Cards (primary accounts).
I just call and talk to a person. Much less BS that way.
i was offered 30k points for 3k spend in 3 months
When did you get the retention offer?
💥💥💥
@@runforrestrun2428 january this year
I am new to credit card points and i only have the no fee amex blue cash. Your annual spend of approx $800 on the recently opened gold card with a fee of $250? Don't i have to spend at least $6000 a year on groceries and restaurant to break even? For those of us who have low monthly spend, do you still recommend amex gold and platinum for sub?
1. I use the card primarily for referrals each year. Amex allows you to earn up to 100K points per card per year in referrals.
2. If your spending habits would already make use of the 2 credits ($120 each for Grubhub and the Dining Credit partners), then the effective annual fee is $250 - $240 = $10. If you wouldn't normally use those credits, then the $250 annual fee doesn't make sense for small spenders.
3. An exception to #2 above is getting a large welcome offer in Year 1 and using it for flights. In that case, you could look at it as paying $250 for a flight costing $600, $900, or more.
Has 2 cards but says he doesnt get any value...AMEX should have told Mark to kick rocks
😂
Retention offer will be hard to accept if they raise the annual fee for the Gold before October 25 for me.
Get the blue business plus to keep your points and not waste one of you limited amex cards on an everyday card
I thought I can only have 1 gold card not 2 how you get 2 gold cards from Amex ?
I applied for them both. Just realize that you'll only get the welcome offer on one, though. You can also end up with 2+ of the same card by product changing.
Does Chase Sapphire preferred or venture x have this retention offers?? or what about hyatt credit card haha
Chase is known to offer retention offers, though they're usually smaller statement credits.
If keeping the card, which gold does it better the rose gold or the regular classic gold?
No difference in the rewards or benefits.
Worked!
Is the Amex gold card annual fee now $325?
As I write this reply on 6.07.2024, no. It's still $250.
They didn’t offer me
One. Those bastards lol.
☹️
Would this work with the co-branded cards as well Hilton/Marriott/Delta?
Potentially. I received a retention offer on my Bonvoy Brilliant card before.
They'll never get me card back, even if I pretend with a retention hack.
hello this is patrick
Are retention offers given on co branded cards also?
It's possible & always worth asking! I got a retention offer on my Bonvoy Brilliant some time ago.
Thanks!
HA, GOT EM!

Super credit card executive pro
I got offered 10k to keep mine so I did.
Congrats!
does anything think its so dumb you have to beg for a retention offer. why can't amex offer retention bonuses for loyalty
Does anyone know if chase offers a retention offer on the sapphire?
They have in the past. Chase often does smaller statement credits.
Great video 🎉
Thanks!
How is it possible to have two Amex Gold cards?
Amex allows you to have multiples of the same card without an issue. You can do upgrades / downgrades within the same family of card products, or do what I did and apply for them directly (only got the bonus on 1 though).
But what's the benefit of having multiple though? You can only get the bonus only once.
@@wshnus - Referrals. Amex allows you to earn up to 100K points per card per year.
