Some of the biggest news stories in our country were revealed by local journalists; from early 20th century lynchings to the Rodney King beating to the murder of Breonna Taylor, local news was there first. But as budgets drop and outlets disappear, this type of coverage is in jeopardy.

I worked for one of the last independent newspapers in CT at the turn of the millennium. Even then, the internet had killed our circulation numbers, staff was getting laid off or asked to do more, and we were fending off offers from our neighboring conglomerate papers like Gannett. In my heart of hearts I believe in local news, but at the end of the day, a community shows its values by what it chooses to fund. My paper got bought out long after I left, in the 2010s, but I still know people who work there.

one of the good thing about the internet is you can become an independent journalist on youtube. boyboy recently did a video about pine gap the united states spy facility in australia there was also an australian youtuber whos house was firebombed by the mob for speaking up and he went ahead and continued making videos documenting his research. the point is journalism isnt dead it just evolved and alot of old journalists have to keep up with the times and accept that important news is being spread all over the internet not just news sites

In this case, that's not true. Local journalism needs local support. Not too many folks subscribe to their local paper, so local journalism dies. This is a result of us caring more about national news than local news. The power is yours.

As a local journalist myself, this video made me well up in tears. Every week, we hear of another publication that's been gutted by a hedge fund or shuttered entirely, and sometimes it feels like no one's noticing. Local news is in a serious crisis - thank you for shedding a light on it.
Community-centered reporting is so important for getting people involved in the issues they care about. There's a reason why fascist politicians and their billionaire donors are trying so hard to crush local journalism!
For anyone who's just learning about this: get in the fight by familiarizing yourselves with your local news publication (nonprofits like NPR/PBS affiliates are a great place to start!)

I have a hunch one of the main reasons local journalism is declining is because of the massive influence Facebook and Twitter have. Why would someone wait a day or two to see a news story about their community when they can just hop on social media and get fresh (if often incorrect) info on what's going on in their city? Twitter and Facebook are multi-billion-dollar companies, profit off of clicks and the time we spend on their sites, and don't police misinformation or harmful rhetoric as much as they need to because it affects their bottom line, but it's convenient! Local journalism, on the other hand, takes time to dig around to get to the bottom of local issues, and is much more important than local gossip pages on Facebook. But in this day and age of needing immediate access to information all the time, they're getting outpaced by the world's largest companies taking us all for granted. As the quote goes, "A lie is halfway 'round the world before the truth has got its boots on."
Google knows this, and for the most part works with their fellow multi-billion-dollar companies because click equal money, and if it sends you to Facebook instead of your local news, everyone makes more money off of you while you're looking for reputable info and get sent to today's gossip hubs on social media instead of being sent to your local journalists, who are held to much higher standards and rigorously investigate in our communities than your Average Joe with a Facebook account and a lot of opinions. It's a bummer, but I try really only go for local news sites when I google what's going on in my city, and that can require scrolling through a lot of results or just waiting a day or two to see what my local journalists publish about incidents.

I work in social services and have been dealing with harassment for numerous things... I see so much wrong and won't shut up about it.
Client files are a mess. Stuff is in the wrong place, wrong chart, or sitting on some lazy secretary's desk under her snacks. People can miss out on vital services because the records aren't where they need to be.
People trying to get help through us for DDS get shafted because case managers just refuse to answer the request for info. See, they only care if they can get audited. And since not all cases can be audited (no clue why), the case managers on the audit free caseloads can just ignore it.
    So then what happens?
DDS makes their decision based on whatever they already have... which means qualified people get no help because their case managers are idiots.
And families just hear oh well you don't qualify. They don't know that the reason is that our agency IGNORED THE REQUEST.
They hate my guts and have been trying to bully and drive me out for years.
It's fucked all over the place.

The riot was sparked because law enforcement got away with that crime. I have read a few free sample substacks. I have not paid for one yet. Could a group of writers in a local area bundle articles focused on that area be a paperless local press?

And management (who are making WAY more than their employees) don't want to ever have that conversations. It's driving people away from a very important profession. One reason behind the decline of local news IS its impact. Many local papers have been purchased by large companies or wealthy individuals, then run into the ground in the supposed pursuit of profit...but it isn't always profit. In some cases, it has become clear over time that these local voices are being deliberately silenced by those with the power to do so who don't like the views expressed in those papers. That's why I think we need more non-profit papers. It can't be about the money, at least not in our day and age.

we could be forgiven for thinking that there is a concerted effort
to stifle the "muckraking" aspects of local news.
(there is another term I should use but it would not pass the algo-muster here on the tube-u-all)
most local outlets are now in the hands of large media conglomerates
who set the tone *and* the content of those "local" outlets.
those conglomerates have political biases, most of which,
like the Sinclair group, run counter to exposing the shady machinations at
the local and national level of the class to which
the owners of those conglomerates belong.
