  • Finally, FINALLY! I have an update for you on what's happening with Morrigan's Cottage and the renovation plans. There's still a ways to go, but we're making progress!
Morrigan's Cottage is a 200 year old traditional stone cottage set in the west of Ireland on just under 4 acres. Originally this house would have been used by the local farmers, rented from their British landlords. Dated back to at least the early 1800s, someone has been consistently living here and farming this land since then, up until about 4 years ago when the house was left vacant by the previous owners.

Hi Aisling, great that you've submitted your application, I'm sure it will be approved and wouldn't it be wonderful if you could move in, then you'd have much more time and could relax a little. I agree that even when it's raining your view is still pretty If you do a Q & A I would be interested to know what you were you doing in Canada, I think I remember you saying that you were there? Hope the weather improves so that you can finish the painting❤

Hi! Oh I know it’s such a relief that the grant is submitted, it was weighing on me and taking up a lot of mental capacity so now that it’s off, I’m happy! It is still so pretty even when gloomy! And thank you I’ll add your question into the q&a! I did live in Canada for a long time good memory as I don’t think I’ve talked about it much! Hope you’re keeping well and having a great week so far ❤️

The girls play so well! Sometimes they take it too far with each other and Morri will get a warning bite from Bainne but overall they’re so good! Cottage is about 115m2 so it’s a pretty decent size for one of these old cottages! A lot of places I looked at were only 60-80! I definitely dropped the ball on a lot of my planting this year, but I’ll make up for it next year! ❤️

Do you struggle to get builders as you're not close to the big cities?

    • @morrigans_cottage

To be honest I think it’s quite hard to get builders anywhere, but it is hard here, electricians and plumbers I have had good luck with but roofers is almost impossible!

Sounds like I wouldn't have any trouble getting work! (see my profile pic) I'm a builder/roofer.
I'm coming over for a few weeks early next year as I'm sure these grants won't lasts forever.
Need to get a move on!
      What county are you in?
I see Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo seem cheap.
      Any obvious reason?
      Thanks Shaun

@@shaunhennessy603 oh you’d get work pretty quick for sure! Trades are really doing well! Yeah I think the initial plan was for the grant to run until 2025 but I’d imagine they’ll keep it as a lot of people are interested in it! All those counties are cheaper mostly because they are further from Dublin and have lower populations! I’m on the mayo/roscommon border and absolutely love it, such a nice way of life out west and the nicest people as well! House prices are definitely going up out here though a lot of people have the same kinda idea

Questions for your Q and A video.
      Grants..
Once you've qualified for the grant do you have to get all renovations done before you get any money or can the grant be paid in stages?
Ie: If I get a quote to rewire and pay for the work can I get this paid for before moving onto the next task?
What happens if after submitting quotes a contractor is unable to do the work?
How does this affect the grant?
Do you have to start the process again?
Do they send inspectors out for every stage of the refurb or break it down into stages?
      Thanks Shaun

Q and A - Hooo boy, I've so many questions!
Obviously, I mean no disrespect by any of them and just mean the question to the extent you feel comfortable to share.
So as vague or specific as you like:
Ballpark of how much the cottage cost? Is it a mortgage or did you pay outright?
You mentioned in a previous video that this wasn't the property you initially wanted, can you tell us any backstory about your journey to purchasing this place? How many other places you bid on before you got this place etc. How long for the sale to go through?
What kind of job do you have or what sector do you work in? Will you be able to work remotely once you are able to move there?
What do you wish you had known before you purchased your house?
Have you read 'The way home' by Mark Boyle? If not massively suggest you read it.
I think Skillshare could be an amazing sponsor for you by the way. If you could have any skill now that you have your place, what do you wish it could be?
Congratulations on getting the grant in! And I hope I've submitted these questions in enough time for you to get them in the video.

Well done in getting your grant submitted, that must be a weight iff your shoulders. Unfortunately the grant isn't available in the North, wish it was.
Although you are doing this singlehandedly Aisling, you can be assured that we are all behind you 100% spurring you on.

Ah thank you! It is a big weight off the shoulders! Now it’s a waiting game! I think it’s very unfair that the North don’t qualify, I know it’s a bit messy with how things a run between the North and south but it would be nice to mix and match! Mad tho that if you’re 5 mins on the wrong side of a border you don’t get the grant, maybe eventually it’s something the NI gov will be able to introduce since it does seem to be working ok down here!
