My story isn’t as exciting, but I used to work at Police HQ in Melbourne Australia. I occasionally had to go to our old Russell St HQ to do criminal record checks for my job, which was a collection of older buildings. The lifts at the new Police HQ had built in sensors so that if the doors were closing you could stick your arm or whatever in and they would open automatically instead of closing. Well I was at the old Russell St HQ and the lift started to close so I stuck my arm in for the doors to open and discovered that they did not have sensors. The doors closed on my wrist and I could not get it out. I tried for a minute, worrying that the old lift might move and amputate my hand. So eventually I was calling for help (long before mobile phones) and 2 other officers had to come with a crowbar to get my arm out, it was extremely embarrassing. What made it even worse was another policewoman took me to the closest hospital to be checked and the staff were really quite rude, and I discovered that because I wasn’t in uniform, they assumed that I was a prisoner (not appropriate though) and once they found out they were lovely to me. I became the joke of the building, even our then Chief Commissioner asking how my arm was a week later when he saw me in the lift while he giggled at the same time. I ended up in plaster and off work for a week with severe bruising and an even more bruised ego 🤣 When I transferred 5 years later, the incident was mentioned in my farewell speech, so I never lived it down.
