My brother and I saw this film when we were kids it was a sad but very beautiful film that we loved. One of the the most beautiful love stories of all time.
Hi, I'm the poster, and delighted to hear from you! To this day this film haunts me for it's magnificent score, excellent acting, the unique and updated Orpheus legend, and so much more! BTW, love your screen name! Many years ago I remember a perfume by Jean Patou. It was named "Adieu Sagesse." I don't know if it's still available, but it was beautiful! Thanks so much for writing! Best wishes, varadero
I agree!! This is my number 1 all-time favorite movie. I fell in love with this movie when I was about 19 years old. I even signed up to learn Portuguese in college but there weren't enough students signing up so they dropped it from the curriculum. I even wanted to move to Brazil back then!! I have binge watched this for a week now, It is one of the best movies ever made,
It's a truly wonderful movie, Judy. With its abundance of vowel sounds, Portuguese, and particularly Brazilian Portuguese, is a beautiful language for song.
I think I first saw this in the mid-late 60s. It was playing at an "art theater" in Manhattan's East Village. It's really unforgettable and holds up beautifully today. Thanks so much for your comment. Best to you, varadero
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm extremely lucky, 'cause I found the original soundtrack vinyl album for only 1 euro 75 cents!! I went home played it and LOVED it!! Now I really want a copy of this movie! Thank you very much for sharing! Love & respect from a Dutch musiclover!
Very nostalgic is this movie. The sentiments shared in the music the energy of the people from that beautiful country of Brazil as shown in movie will last along with time.
Amo o filme Orfeu negro!
I saw this about 4 years after it originally came out. It's still astounding, beautiful, melodic and frightening! So grateful to hear from you! varadero
I'm in the USA and this is the most of all the best music in the world, and i take it that these are afro-brazilians, beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe I was in my mid twenties when I first heard the sound track which I fell in love with. So I had to see the movie which I also fell in love with. What a unique and magical experience it is for me every time I watch the film.
I've just watched the movie - and I'm speechless. What a fantastic movie it is! Way better than most modern movies. It's hard to believe that it's more than 50 years old ... :-)
So good to hear from you! This is actually from the soundtrack, so it can't be more authentic than that! A haunting melody, well performed by Agostinho dos Santos! Sadly, he died in 1973 on a Varig flight from Rio to Paris. Apparently there was a fire onboard the aircraft, and it crashed just short of the destination. Best regards, varadero
+varadero1839 I heard this song played on violin on a record in 1960 in Khartoum Sudan. I traveled there with a group of musicians to work in one of the night clubs operating at the time and this song stuck in my mind since then. Then my sister who had migrated to Brazil, sent me the printed music and I was overjoyed. We just played it in a gig last Friday night at a private party. I play the tenor saxophone. Thank you so much for uploading this song appreciate it.
Eu amo a voz dele, e sempre vou me sentir assim. Varadero
@WorldCitizen667 You're very lucky to have found the original vinyl for that price! This is one brilliant score, and I'm grateful for your comment. Thanks so much, and now go and find the DVD of the movie! It's amazing!
@ReverendNovember Sorry for the delay ReverendNovember! I may be going out on a limb here, but believe the guitar player is the fabled Bola Sete! Hope I'm right, and hope you have some amazing, and Happy Holidays! Best wishes.
@mortdk Thinking I owe you many thanks for your comments! I'm very grateful, and really pleased that you enjoyed this. The Portuguese lyrics are so simple, yet so meaningful. Sorry for any delay in my responses, but I was unable to use my computer for some time. I was away from my home town, and am trying to catch up on some older messages. Everything you've sent me has been so gracious! Again, thank you so much!
@biastg Hi biastg, the singing voice for Breno was an excellent performer named Agostinho dos Santos. There are numerous articles, and some vocals by him here on YT. Thank you for your question!
the singer in the film is Augustinho Dos Santos, since he is only one to sing the songs of the protagonist, Brenno Mello aka Orpheus. i don't know the guitarist though, maybe its luiz bonfa.
@WorldCitizen667. The film was released in the UK a couple of years or so ago on DVD and I was given it for my birthday. It was £10 in HMV shop. In fact I saw it at the cinema about 55 years ago in London and always wanted to get the music, now I have it. The film was very enjoyable but sad.
@WorldCitizen667 Hi World! I'm amazed that you could have found the vinyl for such a reasonable price! I'll be anxious to hear your review of the movie itself. I think you'll be enchanted! Wishing you all happiness!
@gregwi562 Thank you gregwi562! In this instance, since I'm so pleased to hear from you, let's reverse the title: Happiness has no end; sadness does have an end! Thanks, varadero
I have read that Marpessa Dawn spoke no Portuguese, and that her singing was dubbed by the “Muse of Bossa Nova” Nara Leão. Next time I watch the film, I’ll be wondering if her spoken lines were dubbed also, or just learned very carefully. Her beauty certainly lit up the screen though. There does seem to be a soundtrack album of the original play, “Orfeu da Conceição,” which was the basis for “Orfeu Negro.” And there is an all-Brazilian film “Orfeu,” a 1999 drama also based on the play and directed by Carlos Diegues - but I haven’t been able to find it.
If I hear that someone is studying dance, I mention this film to them to make sure they know about it, and if I'm feeling down, I can watch the first few minutes of it. Also, there was a more modern film, I think it was Natural Born Killers, in which "unused" parts of the screen, like a painting on a wall or something like that, had little movies inserted into them; and I have to wonder whether that was an influence from this film. In this film we constantly see action going on out the windows, through doorways, and so on.
Hi Channing, I posted this long ago, and had a wonderful friend who lived in a similar situation in Rio. When I visited I was always welcomed at that home, as well as other neighboring families. Like the rest of the world, I understand that this type of camaraderie has changed drastically. I'm sad to know this. I'm delighted that you wrote, and wish we could bring back the past! varadero
@varadero1839 when i first saw this Great Film on "VHS",... i was in total heaven at the end,.. i rushed out to the first international music store and found the sound track and anything else related to the film,.. i now have it on 2 VHS tapes,.1DVD and 1 BLURAY DVD,.. and have plenty of the music now on my website, if anyone would like to listen to alot more please visit my site,.. check my channel on here to get the site link
R.I.P. Lea Garcia. Amazing actress. She died two days ago.
My brother and I saw this film when we were kids it was a sad but very beautiful film that we loved. One of the the most beautiful love stories of all time.

I still can't believe Marpessa Dawn (Eurydice), wasn't even Brazilian. How does she speak Portuguese so well!? It's crazy.
