can't wait for well's next films, aftersun was an incredibly abstract and emotionally devastating film and the way the scenes fluidly develop and weave in to the other, coming together to form this beautifully impressionistic masterpiece with no real loosely defined beginning, end or climax was masterful. scenes in aftersun don't really develop or change, they just kind of keep going on and on until it reaches a certain point, where these emotions just kind of hit you with a brick wall and you're left with no choice but to cry.
I watched this movie two nights ago on a flight from Singapore to Tokyo - not knowing anything about it - and was hoping people around me wouldn't notice my SOBBING. What an incredibly sensitive, melancholic, beautiful, tormented piece of art. I just dropped off my daughter (Charlotte!) at college a month ago, have been separated from her mother for 8+ years and this movie unearthed so many feelings of nostalgia, regret, sense of loss, love for my kids and hopes for the future, it's truly remarkable. Apart from witnessing what is happening between Sophie and her dad, I also loved the insights into Sophie's experience coming of age and trying to find her place among the older kids at the resort. Insightful, atmospheric, subtle, tender, visceral, moving, sad, real, ineffable. An absolutely unique and wonderful movie. Thank you Charlotte.
defo one of the most interesting filmmakers of recent. i was utterly devestated by aftersun, and cant wait to see what comes neext. that akerman boxset is incredible and criterion need to do a complete boxset of her works
I know that its incredibly rare for a first time director to be nominated for an academy award, but I think that Charlotte Wells was so much more deserving than some of the other nominees. It's wonderful that Paul Mescal has been recognised, but really this film is so beautifully and carefully considered that I am surprised it hasn't been nominated in more categories. It's been a long time since a movie has taken up so much of brain, for months after I first saw it. The thoughtfulness and care with which she made this film truly took my breath away.
As someone who really admires Akerman, the first thought that came to mind was that she actually reminds me of her: haircut, eyes, her way of looking into the camera at times. So beautiful and full of tenderness. As soon as I watched the last scene of Aftersun, I also immediately had a feeling it had to have been inspired by La Chambre. Hotel Monterey with the hotel scenes too. Love how it's all coming full circle in my brain. Rooting for you, Charlotte
On my first viewing of Aftersun, I was left intrigued by the film’s beauty and structure that Charlotte Wells crafted. On my second viewing, I was left an emotional wreck by its ending. Breathtaking film!
i love her so much and i can’t wait to see what the future holds for her. watched one of her commercials recently and cried. she’s like no other. please give aftersun a criterion release! also i was laughing with her during the story about the poster because the way that’s happened to me a few times now and it always feels like a gut punch. immediately knew where she was going with that story 😭
Aftersun is INCREDIBLE! I want to give them a hug for sharing with us such a personal moment in their life. Truly devastating and poignant. I cannot wait to see what they do next!
oh yes, those brief encounter lines are DEVASTATING. and dang, does charlotte wells know devastating, with her sincerely beautiful AFTERSUN. it just lingers with you; I love how she documents memory in ways I haven't seen before. aftersun felt like an evolution of cinematic language and what it's capable of communicating, so I'm very excited to see what wells does next. also, loved her tidbit about being in the same sundance writing labs class as bing liu -- they both capture the complexity of memory and parental relationships with such incredible nuance and authenticity! glad they had the chance to learn and work together. thanks for having her, criterion!
What a talent! Aftersun genuinely affected me. Wonderful measured performances presented in a manner that felt naturally of a piece despite the mixed shooting formats. As that initial inkling takes root and develops it cemented itself as something I'll never forget.
Ah i was so excited to see this. Aftersun was so amazing! To see a director make sure thoughtful and creative choices like that on their first fillm, i can tell she will be a force in this industry with whatever comes along in the future and I am so excited to see what she does next
Charlotte’s direction in Aftersun is executed so perfectly and with such personal touch that I doubted that this was their first feature. Undeniably brilliant.
Excellent, excellent picks. Anybody who loves film should see every one of these. They also clearly relate to her filmmaking style. Gena waiting for the school bus is a total heartbreak.
Afterfun was so beautifully dreamy and devastatingly poignant in its depiction of depression and father/daughter love. Best film I saw in 2022 and can't wait to see what Charlotte does next.
Aftersun was one of the few films where it went beyond acting for me. I was able to suspend disbelief, and the film broke me. Mescal deserves the Oscar for lead actor and the film itself (it won’t) but it should be up for best picture.
Heya National Coaster News! How are you doing? I'm missing David Lynch and our community. Hopefully he'll come back after his birthday. I hope you're well.
@@beanbeanster7219 Heyy!! I’m doing well, hope you are too. Yeah I’m missing David a lot, but totally understand that he needed the break. I’m starting to feel like he may be done for good but I hope not. I feel like we’ll probably get some sort of video or community post in the next week (or maybe on his birthday like you said) announcing what he’s gonna do.
The scene in the street waiting for her kids is extraordinary but its the scene where she loses it in the house with Peter Falk and the doctor looking on at a distance....THAT is incredible as it matches family experiences from my childhood in the 1970s. I've written to Gena about this and got a reply. A very very wise choice by the filmmaker in this clip (I'm yet to see Aftersun, sounds like a must!).
Would be hard for someone to beat Aftersun as the best directorial debut of the decade, just like how I felt during the 2010s when I saw The VVitch for the first time.
She's a marvelous director. Here's hoping Aftersun gets a Criterion release 🤞🏻
Aftersun broke my heart in so many ways 💜💜💜
Word To Infinity. My #1 film of last or any a year. And love Ms. Wells' picks from the Criterion Closet.
Into scissoring
@@Nahin7866 Ok?
It really should🥺🥺 Although, it’s a MUBI release (not on MUBI 🇺🇸 tho), idk how they’re cool with each other lol

My exact experience you articulated. Bravo.
Dykes taking over Hollywood, more should probably come out more

If Charlotte’s first film is a masterpiece, imagine what she’ll do next.
The problem with expectations is that it can lead to sabotage
@@xe666 I’ll do my best not to do it.
Feels like the next big thing out of UK after Mike Leigh. (Although the styles that they both use couldn't have been more polar opposite.)
Sometimes the follow up isn’t very good. Look at Richard Kelly,
But here’s hoping she has an amazing career ahead of herself!
ugh my #1 film of 2022. her directorial debut is nothing short of magic. fingers crossed for aftersun to get a criterion release!!
Same here... My favourite of 2022 and one of my top 10 of the recent years.

Aftersun is a masterpiece. What a mesmerizing debut. Can't wait to see what's next!
What a lovely person. Looking forward to Aftersun.
Directed the best film of 2022 imo. At least, it's my favourite anyway.

Saw it last night and loved it! Left me in tears.
Very interesting picks! Aftersun is an extraordinary vision, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Charlotte makes in the future.
Aftersun was such a beautiful film. Cannot wait to see what she makes next.
I was really wondering if La Chambre was what influenced that last shot in Aftersun. Good to know it's been confirmed!
I was wondering too! It made so much sense haha
me too! 💙
i love how she's blending into the background
Shes so sweet! Im feeling good just hearing her talk
Love that her jacket looks like the Jacques Demy box set :)
Aftersun was my favourite film of last year, and with some stiff competition! Always great to see what these excellent directors watch and love.
she's seems so sweet 🥺🥺🥺
Can’t wait for what she does next! I also love her picks here!
im so obsessed with her outfit

She made my favorite film of 2022.
just watched News From Home, it's great! Loved Aftersun!
when she is waiting on the street, it makes me cry and cry and cry and cry
Aftersun is the most intelligent and creative film I saw last year. Hands down.
I wasn't a huge fan of Aftersun overall but it is a beautiful shot film. I'm very much looking forward to what she does next.
I hope Criterion picks up Aftersun in the future
