- Hartlepool vs. Darlington is one of the most fiercely contested local derbies in the world. Before the match both teams were on unbeaten runs with Darlington 13 unbeaten and Hartlepool 21, with Darlington aiming for the play-offs and Hartlepool aiming for automatic promotion.
Less than 2 hours after the away allocation went on general sale the 3,750 tickets were all gone as a mass of Poolies made the short trip to Darlington. It was the first time Hartlepool would play in Darlington's new arena and they intended to give it a derby christening worth remembering.
The match was set to be one of the most anticipated derbies EVER.

What a day and what a game. Remember the 'convoy' of buses and cars out of Hartlepool that day, police escort down the A19 and when Effion scored that fantastic goal the stadium erupted. We took the 'arena' EASY!!

Because Darlow built a 25k seater stadium but they did/do not have permission from the local authorities for more than 10k to be in the ground. This was one of Darlow's biggests crowds ever, normally they have crowds of between 3 to 4k so the ground looks even more empty.

I can't remember our ground being raided.
Both have unrealistic hopes. Newcastle= we'll make Europe and win our first trophy. Darlington = Premiership in 5 years...said in 2000.
Both constantly sack managers when these unrealistic hopes aren't met.
Both have had issues with corruption.
Both clubs are badly run.
Darlington is a mini Newcastle.

You've got a lot in common haven't you? Darlow's chairman Reynolds got done for fraud and went to jail. Allardyce was involved in a bung scandal and St James' Park was raided by the police. As I said, lots in common.
