@@tartgreenapple When you grow up during the entire Graffiti and B.Boy era, you get to know all the players of the game and in one form or another we were all connected. During the early days, before all these movies and documentaries were filmed, graffiti and bboying had a very small audience. Hardly anyone outside of NYC knew the deal. So, it's easy to get word when someone in this circle gets killed or dies. Most people that were not on this scene and not from NYC were not informed and would not have a clue of who's who...even 40 years later. But, for the people that were hip to this...there was always someone that would pass the word that so and so died or got murdered and it would spread like wildfire.
Even though RAMMELZEE was apparently at the vanguard of many shows, gigs and tours that gave him exposure during the 80s, I feel his contribution is truly under-documented. I know some of his artwork is sold for mad money today, yet I have never seen a picture of a piece or even a tag from him on a subway. How is that ? I mean look at how DONDI himself struggles at explaining the crazy artwork of RAMMELZEE 😮
Thank you for posting this. I have never seen this footage. I always say this documentary is one of the best ever made on so many levels. When I saw it on PBS back in the 1980's it changed my life along with Henry and Martha's book. Respect to Vulcan Films NYC - I think they were involved with the whole Style Wars film production.
Yeah Bernie Jacobs, you were right! Thank God ppl. thought they could do it. And better they did! An evolution of an American artform that still evolves and lives today.
@12:30 OG explains That Popppin, Electric Boogie, Poplockin originated from the West Coast, L.A. That should of been left in the Movie. Very Important the West Coasts contributions to Hiphop.
Good points. But, the Electric Boogie and Pop Lockin really was not invented on the coast. B.boying, Breaking and Graffiti was always a New York Thing. The gentleman that speaks of it is Kippy Dee aka RaShawn, he lived across the street from me in the Douglass projects in Manhattan. When he arrived in NYC he really wasn't doing much of any dancing, due to his young age. His people showed him what was happening in NYC before he moved here. So, he was simply doing his thing in LA on his own, before he moved here to Manhattan. Sadly, Kippy was murdered quite a while back here in NYC. If the electric boogie and pop lockin was invented in LA, you would have heard about from more people, other than Kippy. Alas, the reason it was NOT in the "Movie." Peace and Love!
He was notorious, due to all the pieces he destroyed. He was known more than most. Nowadays, whenever Cap goes to graffiti reunions, he is embraced by the same writers he went over. All that beef was squashed, everyone grew up. One of the main reasons nobody could touch him, is his neighborhood was mostly working class white and people looking for him would have been chased with bats, if they crossed the line. That yard was his and he did as he pleased. Peace!
Does anybody know how Shy 147 passed away? I have been trying to find info on his death for over 15 years! I know he died back in 84 very early in the game
