They lost the handle on the fire once they shut down the sprinkler system, and once they reactivated it through the standpipes, it seemed to stunned the fire’s growth. If they were afraid of water with electricity, cut the power, having the water on the fire is much more important, and likely, in this case, would reduce the damage to the structure. But they couldn’t tell where the beast was hiding, and the sprinkler alarm is annoying as all hell. I would love to see the After Action Review, to see what the fire ground leadership had to say about it (lessons learned).

Buildings like these often have illegal interior partitions made of plywood which spread any fire that gets a start. Also, they often only have sprinklers in the basement, as that is what the code required when they were built.

I just found a RUclips video of Bar Izakaya's grand opening from November 12, 2017. This fire is almost exactly 3 years later to the day. In 2017 they had sports cars lined up on the street in front of this building and they were doing street performances in celebration. Tonight, they've got engines and ladder trucks lined up in front of the building and they're fire fighting in the street.

One of the cardinal rules I had been taught was one of the first lines went to support any built in fire suppression equipment, sprinklers, standpipes, etc. and control valves inspected to insure they were open. After viewing numerous FDNY videos I've yet to see or hear this being adhered to. This particular incident is no exception. There is a FDC clearly visible with no supply lines connected. What am I missing?

Because roll up gates are extremely heavy and can fall down on us. Safer to cut and remove in a fire. For a typical bull shit run we will cut the locks or in the case of electric ones we will open the control box and hot wire them to open. For fires they get cut out.
