Hey man, Its dope that your videos are so informative and concise. I appreciate your willingness to share these tips so openly. It's amazing how this is from years ago but a new DJ like myself can still learn, understand & improve. Thank you!
Hey TLM. Greetings from Brazil. I believe this one of the best acapella breakdown mixing tutorial I ever found here in RUclips. Keep doing this great job and sharing the knowledge you have. All the best. Lucio
Great way to explain it with the visuals. I want to also add that any DJ will benefit from learning the basics of reading music, at least up to 16th notes and just for the counting aspects of it not necessarily the note pitches but that too will be a benefit. It helps a lot with the understanding how to count when you are trying to break a song down.
very helpful tutorial as always its easy to get carried away and forget the basics such as timing of beats and bpm matching big up to you DJ TLM for sharing your years of experience
The acapella is starting then "And of One". If people don't understand what that means you should check out TLM's video on how to count. I personally skipped over it so I have no idea if he goes over eighth notes, but you can always check online. Btw keep the tutorials coming TLM! Love watching them, even if it's something I know!
Thanks for answering my question so quickly! Already saw the video on Wednesday, but could not react earlier. Was really helpful to understand that your first have to beatmatch the original song and that you can count 1-and-2-and-3-and-4! Now it's a matter of practicing. Merci broeder :)
This was awesome. You explained and demonstrated it very well. I'm interested in getting more into remixing vocals over different tracks like this...... Great vid
Yo TLM you the man cuz! Dropping knowledge of the best kinds. Hooking up newbie DJs and even schoolin us more experienced dudes, I been sending kids to check you vids out cause I got no time or patience to do this. Respect brother! Peace!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Great tutorial Dj, Looking forward @ your other tutorials, Thank you for sharing knowledge, May you be rewarded by our Creator. Keep up the good work
Hey big fan! The way I like doing it , (having both acapela and original song) is , visually or by ear placing the acapela version over the original( both vocals would be timed the same) then I'd manually (slowly) rewind both songs until I hit on the one with the original track, this will give me the correct timing from my the beat at one and the vocals, so I'd simply set a cue point on the acapela. Now you will be able to just simply wait for your beat at one and hit your cue on the acapela .. I hope I didn't throw you off, it's easier doing and explaing at the same time
I dont usually count, but I will rap it out and start the cue point where the flow lands on beat and bar. Only thing about that is it's missing the first part of the vocals.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I feel that this tutorial is very basic. Would you be open to doing a tutorial on mashups or remixing, addressing issues such as key signatures, song structure, vocals, etc.?
Thanks DJ TLM I started DJing a while ago but I lose interest, due to not knowing where to start . Thanks once again for sharing the knowledge . All the best 👊🏽🇵🇭
Dj TLM....what type of power subs do you recommend .. There's lots of brands out there ? ...but I feel that you have lots of experience on this , Art...of mixing music....!!! ??
thats right mr. tlm!! great video!! totally agree wichu! the most important thing for me is the harmony of Acapella and instrumental if you do a remix..
THANK YOU !!!!!, i have been trying to master this with no guidance, i have also been trying to cut up instrumentals, you know a baby here and there with some chirps but not really mastering the mix...thanks alot for this and as always keep doing what your doing man it helps in more ways than one
I feel like you get this a lot but it would help me out so much of you answered. Where do you go for acappella's and instrumentals for hip hop or even EDM? I'm using zipDJ as a DJ pool but the acappellas and instrumentals are far and in between. Any recommended DJ pools for it? Thank you so much in advance!
Acapellas are often found on the 12 inch single of the song. Often your digital dj music services will provide acapella and instrumental tracks to download if you are a subscriber.
Thank you for this video! By the way, I still don't get it, what's wrong with acapella intro in "Peter Piper" by Run-DMC. I'm beatmatching, tempo is OK, but I just can't overlay it correctly on some other beat. It definitely starts not on the One.
i used to use acapellas on other instrumental tracks, and some times the bpm of the acapella is not right, for example i have a track at 128 BPM, and when i got the acapella, i found out that it is at 180 bpm, and i found a solution, i use Traktor scratch pro 2, uder the Play botton, we have: Move Cue Grid when u clic grid, you will find some nice tools, like adjusting the grid and the BPM, i changed the bpm from 180 to 128, and when i hit sync it worked! i hope this help, and i have one request, i wanna know some infos about mixing in key and harmonic mix, because i want to start making mixs and uploading them on youtube, mixcloud etc... and thanks for the video bro!
This is a great way to explain accappella mixing. I learned on vinyl back in the mid 80's so back then you just had to "feel" where to start it and you also had to know the original flow in relation to the track. I don't know what we are going to do about this new trap music that's already off beat to begin with tho. I guess us old G's will have to put these new cats on beat in the remixes! Lol. Let me stop before I start sum stuff here.
Brah thank you for these tutorials you have helped me from day one and I'm so inspired by this bro I been on your page for about 3 years now and I'm not where I want to be but I'm not where I was ... can you make a tutorial about scratching out of song that would be dope
If the acapella is slow enough to be half of the bpm of the edm track you can play it. If the Dj software you use also lets you double the speed of a song, you can double the bpm of the acapella. But not with the pitch slider, I mean by editing the speed of the song. I hope you can figure out what I mean but it's really hard to explain on here.
The best thing to do with the acapellas that doesn't start at the one beat, is to sing it and counting with the fingers at the same time, by example, Calvin Harris - Flashback, "this is like a flashback" if you do it you will notice that the word "Back" downs on the 4 beat, that means that, you have to push play 3 beats before, if you want that to do a good acapella mix, because the 4 beat will be the firts beat to creat a good mix, I hope you can understand =D
Great tutorial! One question; you mentioned that it's important to match the original track bpm that the vocals came from with the new instrumental that you want to put the vocals on..... but what if the original vocals were always acapella? And what I mean is my friend freestyled some lyrics with no music and recorded himself, he then sent it to me and asked me to make a beat for it, and this proved to be the hardest thing ever. Hope I explained my situation well enough,
I understand exactly what you mean. You need to ask him if he was listening to a beat in his headphones when he recorded the vocals. If so, he needs to check the bpm of that beat. If he did not use a beat it is almost impossible to add music to his vocals because they will never be totally on beat. If you are rapping or singing without a beat the tempo of your vocals will fluctuate throughout the whole freestyle. Even if he was able to keep the tempo of his vocals real steady you would still have to manually adjust a lot of kicks and snares to follow his fllow (or play the entire beat live while listening to his vocals (but that would require good drumming skills on your end.
This is so late, but I figured I could tell you how I would do that. Maybe help someone else! When I’m listening to the acapella, I will tap along with hot cues every 4 beats. Then lay an analyzed instrumental on top, and play with the pitch until they line up, and Bam! Got your BPM!
Ey man! thanks for this VID! i just have a quick question! I'm having troubles mixing songs with lyrics! Somehow, i can't seem to find a way to mix 2 songs together without the vocals playing on top of eachother, i don't know how to sneak in the next song! i just usually wait until after the song finishes, HELP! some songs, after the DROP or chorus, the vocals come in immidieately! how do i mix those songs????
+DJ NeilPatrick Most club versions of songs will have a beat intro. I'm guessing by the sound of your query that you are mixing R&B/Pop with no intros? There are a few different ways i would do it... 1. Loop the last few bars of the song (just after the vocal) which you are mixing out of - thus giving you longer to drop the new song. 2. Use a looped beat to blend in-between the two songs. 3. Adjust your track selection so as two tracks like these aren't one after another. 3. Drop mix. Or drop it "on the one" as DJ TLM would say.
I know FrOsTyBeArKiD already asked this question but the reason I'm stressing on it is because I get my songs from franchiserecordpool.com they have a lot of songs but not enough acapellas. Therefore, which record pool (your opinion) is best to get acapellas from?
Hey DJTLM My question is : i'm buying a controller soon and i am trying to decide between the numark Nv and the pioneer DDJ-SR i used to play on a pioneer system in a club but i really like the functions on the Nv like the screen and i can move away my laptop in the club alltho i have never played on a numark controller what do you suggest for me ?
can you explain this - " i want to add an acapella of any short vocal like (put your fucking hands up) just before the drop of any song so when and how to do that"?
What do you do if you've written a song before finding a beat. How to find a beat that'll go with your lyrics? Or at least make a beat go with your lyrics
so the djm 900 srt allowed you to play 4 platter with the ddj sp1 nice will do more research to it i already own a ddj sp1 that i use with a tractor z2
It definitely sounds better, but if you can't or don't know how...do what you do...you're the artist, your colors, strokes and paintbrush make the art...but make sure you own it.
Love these tutorials! However, you don't talk much about acapella songs that are, in fact, truly acapella: take songs from Libera or Pentatonix or Take Six, etc. In those cases, there's no "original" song with a beat: you have to pull the beat from the chorus by itself.
The acapella I have is at 110 and the edm track is at 125 I've heard this mash up live and it works with out speeding up the 110 track to 125 Can you explain this ?
i just googled it they used Fl studio to turn the 110 track to 125 bpm it sounds a little off but better then speeding the track up 15 more bpm i have so much to learn lol and yes i saw the acapella on the left side of the turn table and the Beat on the right side and both said 125 bpm but when i downloaded the song serto read 110
This could be more of a production thing than a DJing thing. People can do this by changing the tempo of a song in a software like audacity, from 125 to 110, as opposed to changing the pitch. Chaning BPMS over 30 beats can distort the audio however

That song could be a banger "test, test, test, microphone test"

;,, v c
hello dj tlm what about a hiphop accapella on a fast beat like edm ?
+bongo You will have to speed up the acapella and/or slow doen the edm track
If the acapella is slow enough to be half of the bpm of the edm track you can play it. If the Dj software you use also lets you double the speed of a song, you can double the bpm of the acapella. bongo
If the Hip Hop acapella is about 65bpm, you can mix it with an 130bpm edm track
Often done with afrobeat remixes

Herfmonster agreed
Why not have a cue point start at the word "two" instead of waiting for "and". Makes sense if your used to being on the one.
