I am crying while watching this. I have been teaching sped for 5 years and 3 years as a para before that. I have made to feel crazy for saying the hitting, biting is traumatic, “well that’s all part of being a sped teacher” it is but it doesn’t mean it’s not stressful and traumatic. Thank you for validating everything I have been feeling. I love my kids and have seriously been thinking maybe this isn’t the job for me, like I’m just not equip or built to do this, but you have made me feel normal. Thank you.
@Carolyn You are so much more than just validated... you're amazing. Doing what we do is challenging in so many ways and rewarding in so many others. Most of all, it's not universal for every teacher in every classroom with students who have severe and profound disabilities. We're all having our own struggles and challenges and wins. We all carry those things in different ways... no two journeys are the same. And, honey... I'm there for you. Seriously. If you ever feel like it's all too much or there's a nut you just cannot crack, email me and I will do my best to help. ❤❤❤
I wanted to quit after my first year of teaching Sped at a year-round school. Now that I look back on it I wish I stayed at that school. I'm going 5th year of teaching sped 😊
I think everyone has a moment or two of doubt that first year especially. You just need someone there yelling "You can do it!" PLUS remember this self care piece too 😊
