  • For this "Blank by Drone" video of Columbus, Ohio, we're going back to footage that's over five years old! I'm calling this "Vintage Drone Tech", and I've got two or three more videos that I could make in this series from other cities I filmed and never did anything with the footage.
    The drone used for this was a Phantom 2 (not Vision or Vision+), and the camera used was a GoPro Hero4 Black mounted on a Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal (weirdly I found that the H3 gimbal, designed for the Hero3, actually stabilized the camera better than the H4 gimbal). The footage was edited in Premiere Pro for timing, layout, and color grading, then processed through After Effects to remove barrel distortion and to do other corrections (horizon leveling, image stabilization when-needed, etc.).
    This was filmed in 2015, using 2014 drone tech. Part of the reason for finally editing this video is simply because I had the footage and I wanted to finally put it to good use rather than have it live only on my hard drives. But another part of the reason for making this video is to practice not being limited by the equipment I had/have. Of course newer drones make capturing similar shots far easier and faster, but it was still possible to capture pretty shots even with drone tech that's now over six years old.
    The song used in this video is "Sipping on Sunshine" by Mike Mains, and it was licensed through Musicbed.com.
    All footage was filmed in and around Columbus, OH. If you're interested in learning the specific locations, turn on Closed Captions, and I've listed the locations on there.
    If you like the video, please give it a 'thumbs up', which will help the video be seen by more people. It actually does help the algorithm to know if you liked or didn't like the video. :-) And if you'd like to see more videos like this (whether vintage or modern 'Blank by Drone' videos) please subscribe.

    Amazing work... Composition, moves, piloting, lighting and post production is top level. The wider fov by the GoPro makes the footage look even better today because all we are used to see is "Mavic" fov. Keep uploading your work please it's very inspiring.

      Thanks, Jani! It was fun to go back to this footage and see that many of things that I still appreciate about drone footage (one in particular: low-altitude shots) were things that I implemented even five years ago.

    Honestly I would take this over a Mavic air 2 any day in terms of quality!

      Haha, thanks! Definitely one reason behind this video (which I actually mention in the description) is to show that we don't need to be limited by our equipment. It's easier to make nice-looking footage with newer drones (I have a Mavic Air 2 and a Mavic 2 Pro myself), but that doesn't mean you can't still create content with whatever you've got.
      Anyway, thanks for watching!

    Nice footage and mix. Even in 2020, you'd never be able to tell this was GPH4 footage. Side note - You're M2P Hyperlapse videos did so well, (How I found you and subbed) I'm surprised you haven't put together any MA2 Hyperlapse video, given the 8K functionality. Enjoy your vids man, keep em coming!

      I actually was among the first to receive the MA2 (other than the people who got pre-releases)...I ordered a few minutes after the announcement, and it shipped pretty quickly. I had a whole plan to make a bunch of RUclips content about it (including hyperlapse features), but then -very surprisingly under the circumstances- I ended up getting hired for a lot of projects, and because there was a pandemic going on and I didn’t know how long work would be coming in for, I was accepting every project that came my way. That was five months ago and I’ve stayed busy with hired work this whole time. So my big plans for Mavic Air 2 content all fell through.
      That said, once I come out of this “problem” of having a lot of work, I do hope to make at least a few videos about the MA2. But as things are right now I’m booked through the rest of the year, so who knows if it’ll still be worth making videos about it after that long.

    I think being able to fly lower-tech drones like Phantom 2 makes you a much better pilot. Bear in mind, there are no safeguards like obstacle avoidance or even a good way of viewing the GoPro. I am assuming the Gopro app feed conks out after only a few hundred feet. Good Work Man!

      Cooper Neel I had it set up with a dedicated wireless transmitter/receiver. It was sort of plug-n-play (no soldering) but there were several different components...the GoPro plunged into the gimbal, the gimbal routed through a On-Screen Display board, into another board (I can’t remember what that board was for...maybe interfacing with the drone?) and then into a transmitter...all of which I had attached to the underside of the Phantom. Then I had a Lilliput monitor attached to my controller, and the wireless receiver was attached to the back of that. So I was able to get a decent signal and see what I was filming. But there was no controlling settings while flying, so I’d get the overall settings ahead of time (framerate, resolution, color profile, etc.) and then just hit record before flying. So much footage to look through to find the shots I wanted to use. :-)

    A friend gave me an old drone (Phantom 2) that he no longer used, it turns on but the lights remain red, he told me that the fireware may have to be updated, but I could not know how ... you know what I can do?

    Your video seems a bit smooth did u frame using 24fps or 60fps actually?

    • @BlueMantleFilms
      @BlueMantleFilms  3 года назад +1

      This was filmed and edited in 30fps. On my travel films I usually do 24fps to mimic a cinematic style, but for drone videos I do 30fps. I tried one or two drone videos at 24fps (Santa Fe was one, and I might had done another one that way) and I didn't like it that much, so went back to 30fps.

    How bout Charlotte, NC/Lake Norman area? ...lots of cool angles and locations.

    • @BlueMantleFilms
      @BlueMantleFilms  3 года назад

      I would like to! I've been to Charlotte and enjoyed it, but I was there for a hired project and only briefly, so didn't have time to do other things (like film a drone video). Still, that's something for me to keep in mind. My wife and I are talking about doing another round of these Blank by Drone videos next summer, traveling around the U.S. and filming at a bunch of cities that we didn't get to the first time around.

      Thanks for the feedback. Your complaint is probably the most-repeated of complaints on my drone videos...some people just want nice slow videos. But I enjoy the videos like this, so this is how most of them will be made. That said, I did make a “slow drone” video of Switzerland, so if you want to watch long shots of beautiful landscapes, that’s the one for you.
