    Welcome to the first episode of a new format for Bizarre Beasts, which we’re calling Season Zero. Over the next year, we will be remastering episodes of Bizarre Beasts that were originally created for vlogbrothers.
    First up: the manul! These cats' adorable pupils, it turns out, are a mystery! AN ADORABLE MYSTERY!

    Any footage I’ve seen of the Pallas’ cat in the wild shows them living in rocky, cliffside environments that experience snow; maybe, the circular pupil is advantageous over the slit pupil in an environment with a lack of vegetation due to higher elevations. Slit pupils on land mammals tend to occur in smaller ambush predators that rely on vegetation for camouflage; there’s no vegetation where the Pallas’ cat lives and it’s coat helps it blend into the rocky environment.

      @Eddisdedd 7 месяцев назад +5

      @@vincentx2850 if I could add to this, it's a higher elevation, which requires more red blood cells. Maybe the reason is to conserve energy the two disc muscles in the eyes would be using to make a pupil vertical. They could have evolved to get rid of the pupil once they started to live in less humanly populated areas. This is just a thought and could be completely wrong.

  • @vincentx2850
    @vincentx2850 7 месяцев назад +208

    I think there are still a few very important mistakes worth pointing out, which can help to clarify the whole situation. In many part of its range manul do not mainly prey on rodents, but pikas. Pikas may look like rodents, but they are lagomorphs, so more closely related to rabbits. And they do not hunt in low light conditions. Unlike most small cats, manuls are mainly DIURNAL animals. That is because their principal prey, pikas (and also things like ground squirrels), are burrowing animals that are active diurnally. The mountains and high plains of central Asia is a cold place, and its important for small animals to gather food during the day. And when they do, their predators will follow.
    There is another small cat with a round pupil, the jaguarundi from the neotropics. This is also a predominantly diurnal animal, but for different reasons. Jaguarundi lives in a very competitive environment with many species of small cats, such as ocelot, margay and three species of tigrinas. By adopting a diurnal lifestyle and having the round pupil associated with it, jaguarundi may reduce its competition from other cats.

    • @vincentx2850
      @vincentx2850 7 месяцев назад +48

      Similarly, the golden cat, bay cat and marbled cat of South East Asia have an oblong round pupil, similar to a lynx. They too have a predominantly diurnal habit, avoiding competition from things like leopard cat and clouded leopard in lowland evergreen forests. The tricky thing with this lineage is that they can be extremely ecologically flexible. The golden cat in particular have extremely variable coat patterns, and individuals with different coat patterns prefer different micro-habitat and different circadian rhythm, presumably to cope with the highly variable habitat and the great multitude of competitors it face throughout its range. The black and spotted individuals of golden cat are highly nocturnal. Maybe the pupil shape has lower evolutionary plasticity, and the golden cat have to stick with the swiss army knife of pupil shape - the round one.

    Random aside: There are more than three ways to determine distance visually! Ones that weren't covered in the video:
    Relative size. If you know a bird is smaller than a tree, but the tree appears smaller, it's not because you found the world's tiniest tree. It's just father away!
    Atmospheric haze: the mountain that is bluer has more atmosphere between you and it, so it's farther away!
    Eye kinesthetics: Your eye muscles have to exert themselves more to focus on nearby things. The feeling of strain contributes to a sense of closeness!
    Overlap: Stuff in front of stuff is closer than the stuff behind stuff!
    This is by no means an exhaustive list. There's bunches more ways we can discern distance visually!

Hopefully future episodes will go forward with that method

    Interestingly, Panasonic's "Lumix" range of cameras use "depth by defocus" for the autofocus. Other systems like Canon's "dual pixel" work by isolating light coming from different angles, which has the effect of restricting which part of the lens it comes from as though you were using a smaller aperture (and hence greater depth of field), effectively giving two different sharp images for which you can compare the parallax - which is zero on the focal plane.
    I'm not specifically aware of any animal that uses this latter system, which was in large part motivated by having just the one lens. But it wouldn't surprise me if something similar didn't happen with compound eyes.

This new series is great - it shows self-correction as one gets new information, one of the most valuable characteristics of scientific thinking. We all get things wrong sometimes, but only the best of us point out our own mistakes or misunderstandings and work to correct them.

    Is there any way to get just the Mola Mola pin? I’ve been supporting since the beginning, so I have no need for the rest of season zero’s pins. I would LOVE to have a complete set with the Mola Mola.

    Someone should make a movie about these Manul/Pallas cats, call it "A Cat Called Oto", voiced by Tom Hanks😹, in the memory of CAMEO.

    Any chance that huge pin bundle could be divided up into four sets? Otherwise love to get all the pens because I did miss some of them.

    A comment about the phylogeny would have been nice. The obvious guess as to why they have round pupils like the big cats is because the vertical pupil evolved after the small cats split off from the big cats. Said another way, they are a member of Pantherinae not Felinae. I have no idea if that is true, but it seems like the most likely reason given the information in the video. Not every feature of an animal is due to it's environment. Sometimes it is due to it's ancient ancestor's environment and sometimes it is due to random chance.
    Edit: it is in Felinae but sharing a sub-family with the fishing cat which also has round pupils, the phylogeny I could find in 15 minutes does not rule out the possibility that it never evolved slotted pupils, although that would imply that feature evolved twice in Felinae, which is no more a stretch than saying reversion to round pupils happened twice in one sub-family especially if you have a pressure towards one and not the other, the one which there is pressure towards would be more likely to evolve multiple times. But my main point stands: the video assumes it evolved round pupils without explaining why the video assumes it has an ancestor with slotted pupils.

    colobus (κολοβο) means short or missing, depending on the context. I'm guessing, whoever named them wanted to make note of their short ears... cant imagine anyone thinking of those little beasties as ugly :)

    Hi! I am a middleschool building substitute, and the kids have loved the pins I've added to my rotation -- will there be any other "catch up" packs, or another way for me to get the rest of the pins, so that I can wear them day-to-day, and continue to delight the kiddos?

      Search the comments for the phrase "and already have the original 12 pins, to get the Mola Mola pin" and you will see that there is hope.
