  • We wanted to see the Whale before it had passed, but we were too late. At least we got to see it one way or another. We paddled in our canoe about 5 - 7 miles to find the Chesapeake Police towing the dead whale to Craney Island to have a necropsy performed. (Not to feed the sharks, like I had previously thought. Once we found them, (looking for the whale), we followed them in the canoe the 5 - 7 miles back to were we put the canoe in. It was a hell of a paddle in the 92 degree humid day, but we kept up with the police boats and got within 20-100 feet of it most of the time. It was the closest either of us, (my wife and I) have ever been to a whale---dead or alive. I wish we could have followed it to watch the sharks feed on it, but without a motor, or a boat, the canoe was not an option.
