Dante needed the sparda devil trigger to defeat mudus in dmc 1 In the anime he defeated Abigail (Equal to mudus) with his normal devil trigger. In DMC 2 he defeated another demon equal to mudus in his base form. In dmc 5 he defeated urizen who was even stronger than all of those demons combined, In his base form.
