Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney Hated Each Other... But Here’s Why! | the detail.

- Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney formed a personal bond and musical alliance in the early 1980s, collaborating on pop hits like 'The Girl is Mine' and 'Say Say Say'. But this soon soured when Michael Jackson acquired the ATV music catalog in 1985, and therefore the publishing rights of a near full catalog of Beatles hits.
This is a breakdown of the power struggle that followed in the years after and the growing resentment that grew between the two pop icons.

Paul actually said in an interview that they were actually friends. They just strayed away from each other but they doesn't hate each other
Yes, this video title is a misrepresentation. There is not a single video that can be found on RUclips where McCartney seems anything other than disappointed that Jackson bought his catalogue of songs out from under him. Using the word "Hate" in the title was designed, it seems, to simply get views. Just a bit dicey, the way people invent feuds that are not really "feuds." Feud means it is an ongoing issue, with each side making nasty comments about the other. Not just being angry or hurt by someone's behaviour.
He said that Mj teased him about trying to buy the rights to the beatles songs, which made paul like him less.

Paul was so salty that Michael bought the catalog EVEN THOUGH Paul himself was offered the catalog TWICE but he refused. I always thought “Say Say Say” was a better fit for Thriller than “the girl is mine”.
Perhaps; but were they recorded in the same sessions?
@@thedys70 Those two awfui songs, "Say Say Say" and "The Man" should never have been on any Paul McCartney album.
@@farrellmcnulty909 Say Say Say has been a staple on Australian FM radio here since it's release; it is what it is I guess...
The Girl is Mine had that funk to it, and it was more representative to Michael's image. Say Say Say is a great song, but in my opinion it had more of a McCartney sound. MJ and his producers had a specific sonic sound they were going for when creating Thriller, so in terms of that sonic sound, I'd say The Girl is Mine is more fitting. Also, Baby be Mine is somewhat similar to The Girl is Mine in sound.
@@gisellelindsey8491 The Girl is mine was written by MJ, while Say Say Say was co-written. So it`s natural that Say Say Say sound more like Paul than The girl is mine. Paul wrote the melody for "Say Say Say" played most of the instruments and co produced it with the Beatles producer George Martin, while MJ wrote lyrics and added vocals.
Basically it was just business, McCartney took it personal. And I agree w/ Yoko Ono, it was best that MJ owned it because Yoko & Paul already hated each other & they would of fought tooth & nail over it.

As Michael said... Paul was too cheap to spend the money...
Paul McCartney was bitter, he was cheap negotiater and MJ was a business genius. Everyone was cool with MJ when he was just an entertainer but as so as he became powerful and a savvy business man they didn't like that.
Because they didnt approve of black men being business savy, michael said it himself "theyll invite a black man to entertain but not to the business".
@Christina Mitchell that's baloney MJ was a millionaire by age 17, he made 100 Gs a month by age 10. He learned from Motown that if a musician doesn't read the fine print they go broke no matter how many hits so when he did Thriller his name was on every thing and when it went blockbuster he made every penny on it, the Thriller album was made for $700,000, imagine the profit, that's business genius. Imagine you write a song about a handicap person and by your shock it becomes a mega worldwide hit. Then someone sells the song to a Chicken company for a chicken commercial, that's what MJ did and he made millions turning old hit songs into stupid commercials, LMAO.
@@pashon4percushon he said it, sorry to break it to you. Especially in Motown days he knew the plight of black artists that's why he bought catalogs, having those is like investing in stock that money will always pay.
What do you think the song "they don't care about us" was about?
Im not saying this in anger it's just true. I realize for non-blacks in this country they won't understand they've never had the same experiences we still have today.
But Michael knew and he said it and said other things too, I've read them and heard him.
It's one thing to be rich, it's another to own and that's what he did, same thing with prince he fought warner brothers records for ownership of his own songs he wrote and his own name.
The money isn't in the entertainer it's in ownership, that's why prince said he was a slave people get sick of hearing this but it's never changed its still just as relevant today as it was decades ago .
@@christinamitchell6796 I kind of disagree because because that view (not saying your view)is on the line of hypocrisy. MJ was a multimillionaire. He wouldn't settle for anything less than 10 million dollars. But then you claim he said they won't accept a black business person being business savy. Where's the non acceptance? Successful musicians are not expected to be business geniuses, that's why the music companies always take them for a ride. The idea for MJ to purchase the Beatles catalogs wasn't his, at his success he knew nothing about it. Someone he knew had done it and mentioned it to him out of common conversation. They had purchased a catalog of Sony songs and could do anything with them. MJ took interest to see what would happen and purchased a small catalog of songs. He sold them to commercial jingles and started snowballing catalogs from there. I remember those commercials in the 80's and had no idea it was MJ selling out the songs, and he didn't care about their meaning he just wanted to make money. So in the end he was a 6 figure millionaire and your saying he still pulled out the race card? And Prince, they say his 'Slave' remark was hypocrisy too he's lucky he didn't loose his black fans to that remark, what kind of a 'Slave' has a 6 figure million dollar account?
@@pashon4percushon well I respect your opinion we can respectfully disagree, some of the things you said I said are incorrect especially the "race card", there's a difference between pulling the "race card" and being aware of a system that's been in place for hundreds of years.

To read in a 7 years reseched book "Make that Change" is the following: Michael Jackson let Paul Mc Cartney come first when it came to the beatle catalogue.
The catalogue was to expensiv for Paul Mc Cartney. So MJ bought the beatle catalogue. Yoko Ono was satisfied that the catalogue come in Michael Jackson's hands. I never could understand Paul's hate against Michael. Sorry german.
I hope you can Rest in peace my dear Michael Jackson
I agree with you, the catalog was to expensive for Paul, he didn't want to buy it. Then he advised Michael to buy the musical rights, and Michael did it, I don't understand Paul's reaction. Maybe he was angry about himself that he did a mistake, and that he didn't want to spend the money. Just for his image, that he isn't that stupid, and Michael was smart, he did publicly such a response.
McCartney was richer than Jackson back then. He didn't buy it because Paul and Yoko don't get along and it's Lennon McCartney. Not just single McCartney. Money wasn't the main concern

@@nnnn5985 This what?
MJ made a power move. Kudos to him!
I have to admit, being more of a Michael Jackson fan, I looked at this situation as Michael being a great business man, but to be honest, I can see Paul's perspective too. Paul and the Beatles worked hard to get to where they got. Their songs were about love, world peace, and ending racism, etc. I wished Michael would've gave Paul back his publishing , because as an artist he knows what it's like to be mistreated. Michael should've gave Paul back his publishing. They were close. Michael was a much better person than that. That was out of his character. I guess maybe he felt he might one day need the money from the Beatles catalog to survive. That catalog commanded alot of money and power. I still respect, and love Michael though. He was good man that made the world better, and was very kind and loving.
I agree! Alot of situations require this kind of thinking, seeing both sides. I do agree with what you´re saying! It was odd, but I imagine being a young entertainer reaching high levels of fame and getting loads of money must be quite different. I think there were two factors: 1) He was riding that high of stardom, he was famous before of course but the extent Thriller took him was insane! 2) He was most likely a very nice person, but when it came to business and money he was probably not so much. I think that people are factors of their situations. He had big dreams and was achieving alot, he was very goal driven and it most likely didn´t stop him very easily. As it was said in the video he wanted to discuss matters with Paul but was hung up on, so it´s kind of up for speculation. I do think he made alot of smart moves but was in a position where being a "Boss" makes it hard to be a friend too. Like role confliction sort of. Paul and him were probably not going to be friends because of the roles they had. I do still think that MJ should of given Paul a share for the achievement he had gotten. But alas I do not know much about publishing business and what is required to not lose it all.
"I don't see how he should have that power"..... What about other people (non musicians) who make those decisions for artists? Why is it ok for them to have the power? Why not Michael? He didn't even do anything malicious, and he was right. You can definitely reach a new audience through comercial music.

Brandon Denson please tell me that was a joke? He’s the best selling musician(Beatles) and the richest musician, so how didn’t his career take off?😂
They didn't hate each other. Neither one hated the other.
I knew that Paul had an issue with Michael buying the Beatles catalog but I didn't know the whole history. This was really well done, thank you.
Michael Jackson i love
I believe Paul and Michael really liked and respected each other
They didn't hate each other! They fell out over business but hate is too strong a word to describe it!
I don't know much about this, but after watching the video it seems to me that the catalogue value increased because of Michael Jackson's fame at that time. He also won the award for 'Thriller' which kind of help grow the value of the catalogue. Also he did a very great job at marketing the songs which further increased the value. If it wasn't for MJ i don't think the catalogue would be this valuable. In my understanding that is
No, the catalog value increased because the Beatles were still an iconic band, and those songs are timeless. It was also around the time that the Beatles music was becoming available on CD. It's the most valuable song catalog in the history of music, and probably always will be.
@@michaelharrington75 I have no idea why. The songs aren't that great. But then again I'm not a fan of that music.
@@DPPLOWD "the songs aren't that great"? Either you're joking, you're jealous, or your taste in music is just terrible! The Beatles didn't become the greatest band of all time with songs that weren't that great. The songs were the key ingredient of the Beatles fame. They had many more ingredients, but the songs are what got them to the top. Just because you don't like the songs doesn't mean they're not great songs. Billion records sold = really great songs
@@michaelharrington75 to each their own. Not my style of music. But as I said to each their own
What I don't understand is, if Paul believed Beatles songs are everybody's songs, then why he was upset?
I mean, I can use one of his songs to anything I want...
MIchael Jackson did nothing wrong. There is “show” and there is “business” and MJ understood that difference.
I agree with this, and I am a fan of McCartney. Michael never hid his intentions about buying the songs. In fact, he alerted Paul from the get-go. Paul should have been wiser.
Michael was a good business man. There was the accident in a performance in Munich, Michael's scalp was badly burned, Eminem created a really nasty video about Michael. Michael wasn't mad, but later he bought the musical rights of Eminem, that way he owned Eminem. Every time this video is played Michael gets money for that video. That was a smart move.
The fact that John left and broke up the Beatles (literally the best band in history) because he had enough of Paul and the arguments between them making the whole Beatles catalogue feud more sensible
Michael Jackson was in the right and I can't say more
So NOT the best band in history, LITERALLY. They borke up cos they reached their sell-by-date swiftly. Happens for a reason.
@@kyachdistent1301 nah they broke up cuz the members didn't feel like making music together
Their popularity kept growing by the years and their sellings were great at the time of the break up
And John admits in some interviews that the reason of the break up is him not wanting to work with Paul and the others and start a solo career
Michael looked so good in the thumbnail! I wish he stopped the surgery there :( (ps yes I am aware he also had vitiligo)
Michael was a genius on all levels. His style of clothes, his lyrics, his songs, his dance steps and he was a good business man. He did the contract with HBO perfect. When Michael was alive HBO wanted him to go on a tour in America, to make money. When he was dead HBO wanted to make money by disparaging him, they created LN. Michael was so smart, that he did a non disparaging clause in his contract. It said, that HBO is never allowed to say something negative about him. The contract was not terminated. If they say something about him they have to ask the Michael Jackson Estate or his family. The Michael Jackson Estate asked before LN was aired if they can see the movie, they refused. The family asked before LN was aired if they can see the movie. HBO refused. Now HBO has to pay for being greedy. The contract was perfectly done, as if Michael knew, that they would do something like that. He was a good business man, at least he has chosen a really good and smart legal team, which is a wise decision.

Great channel and great video. The title is just really problematic as it seems to imply that there was hatred between both artists. There was no hate and Paul said that he forgave him and only had positive things to say about him after his death.
that was a nice way of saying that he doesn't really care for him. he was kind even at the time. the difference is Paul is a gentleman. MJ was not.
Michael was a genius. Period. Paul’s ego and lack of education got in his way.
wow how disrespectful to paul
that is really disrespectfull to paul. Paul was the one who teached micheal about the whole business. and his ego wasnt even ego. Music historians agree with him that the music is legendary and shouldnt be just thrown into random commercials as if they were regular songs. they have real legacy and dignity wich should be sought upon and kept protected. Paul foolishly signed away his own publishing in the first place, but was mad at Michael Jackson for being a good businessman? Make it make sense. 😂
For some of the comments down below:
you don't need to insult Paul to defend Michael 😠
I agree. But Beatles fans insult Mike all the time saying he tricked Paul when he really didn’t.
What if, after Michael purchased the Catalogues (which, included the ‘Beatles’ music) he phoned Paul McCartney to offer him a percentage of the ‘Beatles’ portfolio. But, instead..., Paul refused to talk to Michael because, he was upset with Michael for the acquisitions. Today, it’s widely known that Michael GAVE ‘Little Richard’ the Rights to his own music! Now, I’m NOT suggesting Michael contacted McCartney to “give” him complete ownership of the ‘Beatles’ catalogues. However, after being “hung up” on by McCartney, I’d be pissed too, and not want to be “Nice” anymore, either!! Consider that, ‘Beatles’ fans!!
Michael backstabbed Paul, no doubt about it. Was it a successful & lucrative business move? No doubt about it. But Paul confided on Michael, telling him how hurt he was to famously lose his own very valuable publishing. Paul explained what publishing was to michael. So michael is disengenuous to pretend it was "just business Paul"
The ironic price michael paid was that he himself the king of pop, would forever get backstabbed, by everyone he ever trusted, every chance they got.
MrDLOC11,
I’ll keep this short. The Catalogues were available to ANYONE (including, Paul McCartney) that wanted to purchase them (fact)! McCartney had MANY opportunities (long before Michael became interested) to purchase the ‘Beatles’ music (starting in 1969) from ‘ATV’. Sure, McCartney spoke to Michael of the importance of owning Music Catalogues. Which, according to Paul (during a late night talk show), Michael’s response to him was..., “Paul, maybe I’ll buy your Music Catalogue.” Paul even stated, he brushed off Michael’s response to him. So...., where the HELL is the “backstab” from Michael??! I’m SO tired of people telling LIES, that can EASILY be debunked!! This is SUCH a WASTE of time, combating with LIARS that’s trying to contaminate the World!!!
@@nernatbentley3778 michael KNEW that Paul wanted his publishing back & how much it meant to him. This is undisputable. Michael DID NOT CALL BEFORE to inform his friend Paul he was seriously going to purchase it . Why not? Because Paul would've been upset & prolly would have out-bid Michael... So, Jackson chose to call Paul AFTER he secured the catelog... that's BACKSTABBING!
Certainly Michael wouldn't have liked it if Paul underhandedly purchased Michael's catelog!!
MrDLOC11,
Dude, after this reply, I’m DONE with your insanity! Firstly, Michael DID tell Paul (while STANDING in the room WITH him) that he may purchase some of Paul’s Music Catalogues in the future! Secondly, Michael DIDN’T conceal a phone call to Paul, in fear of being “outbid” had Paul knew Michael was bidding. A few people bid during the ‘Beatles’ Catalogue auction..., and Michael WON the “Bidding War!!” GET OVER IT!! Paul McCartney HAS! Why CAN’T your delusional ass?
@@nernatbentley3778 lol you get over it, I'm not bothered by the truth! It is you having a tantrum, calm down!!
Business practices & Michael Jackson aside. Imagine having to pay close to 50 million in those years for something that you created, wrote or inspired all because you didn't understand the music business when you where a teen. Who the hell wouldn't be salty about that! To make matters worse you need to pay everytime you performed your own creation. Before you say McCartney was cheap take the above into consideration
He was cheap and had lawyers, if he didn’t understand he should have asked them to explain it to him. The reverse has happened to so many black singers that were robbed by their big company producers.
@@chancegoode173 he didn't have lawyers or money when he signed the deal that put his creations in the hands of others man. @@chancegoode173 it was paul who explained publishing to michael so he knew.paul was just being cheap and it was business for michael.
@@JustMe-ws2pe I am not disputing the fact that for mj it was just business or good business. As a businessesman it was there for the taking. But.... I kinda feel for Paul as to pay over 50 million to own the rights to your own songs (whether good business or not) is crazy. It is not just as simple as branding him cheap (he purchased several catalogue before & after) it is that he felt he was being ripped off as he & John Lennon wrote the catalogue. It is also worth mentioning that he technically only wanted his music but they weren't willing to sell him only his but wanted to sell him the entire catalogue so we can debate about this all day the company stole their music then wanted them to buy it back from them.
Exactly
People rediscovered Nick Drake's discography thanks to a car commercial. Crotchety old McCartney didn't understand Michael was helping increase the value of the Beatles catalogue by licensing it.
Also to Michael’s credit - from what I understand - he did ring up Paul and Ono before purchasing to see if they wanted to buy it before he went on to make the purchase. While Ono gave him his blessing, supposedly he was only able to reach Paul’s lawyer at the time, to which his lawyer relayed Paul feels it’s too expensive, so he’s passing on it.
Yes, you are totally correct. In that sense Michael did everything right!
I think the word 'hated each other' is a BIG word for MJ. He doesn't hate people. He loved people. ❤️

What’s actually really funny to think about is the fact Michael recorded a cover to their song “Come Together” right after he bought the catalog, and did it WAY better! Lol even made a badass music video for it like it was his own song 😂
