With more than 3,000 homicides per year for a population of six million, El Salvador has long held the record of being the most dangerous country in the world. This insecurity was caused by gang warfare between MS13 and Barrio 18. To combat this violence, El Salvador’s young president, Nayib Bukele, declared a ruthless war on gangs. Over 75,000 people accused of being members of MS 13 and Barrio 18 have been arrested and thrown into prison. An extraordinary penitentiary was built especially for them: the CECOT (Terrorism Containment Center). It’s the biggest prison in the world. We gained exclusive access. Fifteen thousand prisoners are locked up here, most of whom will never leave alive. The prison is the symbol of a relentless crackdown on gangs by the 42-year-old president.
The policy of repression is bearing fruit. Neighborhoods that were once run by killers are now calm. Buoyed by the support of the population, who are delighted to be living in peace at last, the President continues his merciless manhunt for gang members. The last ones still at large are fleeing abroad. We spoke to one former gang member, now on the run.
But, as documented by Amnesty International, the crackdown has also resulted in systemic human rights abuses. The police are under pressure to meet arrest quotas, innocent people have been arrested and their families struggle to get them released. These “blunders” do not thwart President Bukele’s security policy. To show that his country is now totally secure, last November he organized the Miss Universe election and has embraced his title of ’the world’s coolest dictator’.

it is terrible that the likes of amnesty international are more interested in the human rights of drug pushing, murdering, rapists than they are of the victims & their families .. & not just in El Salvador .. wonder how they’d feel about the perpetrators if members of their families had been subjected to the same crimes 🤔

Being that this is one of my favourite channels on RUclips I can help you guys with whatever translation you need from Spanish in the future. I am from Belize where a large portion of the population speaks English and Spanish so it may be easier for me to really get the true meaning to either language. While I agree that they don't deserve a second chance, I admit that it is very sad considering the majority at one point in time were forced to join the gangs. Ronald Reagan funding the right-wing militias which caused havoc in the country during the Salvadoran Civil War to the Clinton administration deporting gang bangers by the thousands when El Salvador was still recovering from the bloodshed of the Civil War where they couldn't adjust because at the time they had no known gangs. Can't help but feel sorry for the situation that their country has had to endure but it looks like they have a great president who's more than willing to take on the responsibility that no other leader would.
I feel bad for the small group of wrongfully convicted. In western countries, even with the slow expensive system we still have wrongful convictions. An angry ex etc has undoubtedly sent more than one person to prison.
I guess its the cost paid for getting rid of the Maras.

Okay, he's removing the tattoos, visiting different clinics to avoid being recognised, yet he shows his pictures to the staff...Gang member at 13 and spending 16 years in prison. Rn about half way through. If this does bring long term benefits, that brings uncomfortable questions to those of us in the US and the first world. People generally like these tough on crime attitudes but we would not want this at home. Ppl arrested and imprisoned indefinitely without due process. Police physically checking any individual on the street, going to your house and demanding to look inside and proof you own the place. In the US we are touchy about guns but those praising El Salvador would be against giving up that right for lower gun crimes. El Salvador is in a tougher situation but if this is effective, could we eliminate the worse of US society this way? What other long term rights could Salvadorians be losing to this regime? I don't know if there are right answers.
